Beam Me Up, Shepardy

The Blue PlanetHow would you like to go to space? Ever since man walked on the moon, we have been fascinated with the idea that someday commoners like us would finally be able to travel into space. The view of the earth alone from outer space is in itself breathtaking, often described to be one of the most exhilarating experiences anyone can have. Unfortunately, not everyone can be an astronaut. But if space travel were available commercially, and at an affordable price, wouldn’t you want to go and experience it for yourself?

Would-be space travelers, listen up. There is actually an ongoing project, called Blue Origin, the brainchild of Amazon.com founder and millionaire Jeff Bezos. This project aims to design a new type of spacecraft, designed to shoot almost 100 kilometers into the air to take a small number of astronauts on a sub-orbital journey into space. The project’s website has recently released the first pictures and videos of the launch of its prototype rocket, called New Shepard, last November 13. The aim of the project? In Bezos’s words, of “working patiently, and step-by-step, to lower the cost of spaceflight so that many people can afford to go”. Apparently, the ultimate goal is to offer these trips commercially by 2010. And that’s just three years away!

New ShepardLet’s closely watch the developments and see whether this will actually become a reality. Surely there are various technological and economical hurdles that must be overcome before space travel will become as affordable as say, riding an airplane. But it is encouraging to see that efforts are already underway. Given our exponential leaps in science and technology, perhaps it is only a matter of time before we find ourselves shooting into space and experiencing the ethereal grandeur of the world “out there.” Even to “boldly go where no one has gone before.” :)
