Skateboarding in the Philippines
January 9, 2007
Skateboarding has existed since the 1940’s which started out as pieces of soap box cars that later evolved into skateboards. This was then mass produced in the 1960’s and became a new kind of sport. I still remember as a kid in the early 80’s, skateboards were short and narrow made of hard-plastic or fiberglass. I remember once featured on ABC’s Wide World of Sports on RPN 9 on a Sunday after some weekly Chinese TV series, sometimes they would have skateboard contest. Where the most popular competition is the downhill obstacle course. A race between two playes where there are slaloms between traffic cones, running up and down a wooden ramp, and jumping over a bar but keeping the skateboard on the ground and they jump over the bar and land back on the board.
Today skateboarding has evolved to be more extreme. Boards are also wider, slightly longer, made of concave plywood often convered with sandpaper for better grips with shoes. This sport just got more extreme and is well publicized by the X-Games on ESPN. So popular that some video games are modeled based on some of the famous skaters like Tony Hawk.
This sport is pretty popular in the US, but that does not mean we do not have good skaters in the Philippines. Well maybe not as good at the US counterparts but still good enough to say it’s cool to watch. Watch the video of the Holocaust skaters in the Philippines.
Watch even more of the Philippines’ skaters like Mike Torio, Raymong Wong, Bernard Viernes, Jason Santiago, Jun Ramos, Jason Kid, Jerry Baliguat, Marvin Corpus, Richard Panopio, Jerome Ocampo, Ansey Flores, Pedro Santos, Lloyd Briones, Raymond Lorenzana, Jack Nonato, Mon Chua, RJ Albano, Jun Castor, Ritchie Arenas, Marvin Bolisay, Niko Jonco, JR Tagad, Erlan Roxas, Ramir Denzo, Bryan Virtucio, Barbee Viernes, Boyet Del Mundo and Louie Lumadilla in the 2nd Holocaust Sk8 Video.

any idea of skate shops in metro manila?
philippines have some good skaters i don’t know if they can compete with the u.s skaters though. skateeze.
its great to see that skateboarding is doing well in the Philippines. I just noticed in the video that not one skater was wearing atleast a helmet. i would like to urge skaters everywhere to prioritize safety beyond anything else, especially since in the video they are skating beside a busy road.
Better safe than sorry…
Hello to everyone reading this blog! I am John, a business student from UP. Currently, my group is doing a business plan about the possibility of having a skatepark/extreme sports warehouse in Metro Manila.
Because of this, we are looking for people who are into the sport so we can get information about the people who play and the places where they play. Also, we are looking for possible organizations or group of people who are into skateboarding, wall climbing, and riding BMX.
Do you know who should I talk to? Hope you would be willing to help us. My number is 0905.242.3942. Email address: hirouka88@yahoo.com
Thank you very much!
