Chapter 5 - An Alien Culture

The early days were a bit of a blur. Here I was in a foreign and sometimes truly alien culture sweating it out in a climate more suited to alligators than Englishmen! Outside there were an amazing amount of people with guns! There were check points and Martial Law and I was opening a store selling RTW clothing with my name outside - I was even decidedly unsure about the whole venture! And then there was the publicity! I wasn’t really used to that. I’d had publicity before in Europe and had even appeared (drunk unfortunately and telling a dirty joke to the Premier of New South Wales) on TV in Australia, but the Philippines was so “personal”. Everyone seemed to spend an inordinate amount of time just gossiping about everyone else: who was bonking who and why and when and even HOW. It is hardly surprising that the Philippines ended up as the text capital of the world!

In the mid 70’s there wasn’t much choice when it came to press publicity because Marcos had closed down a lot of newspapers for not being too friendly to him so one was very much left with the Bulletin Today and it’s magazine, PANORAMA. Chelo Banal interviewed me one afternoon – a delightful young lady – and soon I was chatting away nineteen to the dozen with no thought at all. As far as I was concerned we were just gossiping. Wrong. “And what did I think of our local actors?” I had been asked. “Well,” I had stupidly said with no thought at all, “I think Christopher de Leon has about as much talent as a dead slug!” It had been a throw away line designed, I guess, to make me seem both clever and superior. Such is the naiveté of the young and inexperienced. Actually Christopher was the ONLY actor that I knew about at that time and he was, in fact, a good actor; but I was just having fun. Gossip. I was enjoying this. Christopher de Leon wasn’t. As far as he was concerned it was libel or slander or whatever, but it wasn’t Kosher and I was in for big legal trouble.

Let’s help pray for Susana’s case

January 27, 2007

Here’s a case wherein a Non-Compete clause of an employment contract is being enforced by a company against its former employee.  I don’t personally know Susana but I sympathize with her and I hope and pray that she would get the justice that she deserve.  Below are her emails about her case:

Friday Secret# 3 and local cops

January 26, 2007

Background: Friday Secret# 1, Friday Secret# 2

When I was very young, naive and stupid, I actually paid off a cop.

The story behind my encounter with them will forever remain buried with me until the day I die so let’s focus here. For fear of my safety (imagine? from manila’s finest?) and well-being, I gave in to what they asked.

In return for not filing any charges (don’t ask!), they were willing to accept 30,000 pesos. HELOW! I was driving my car so they probably assumed I was loaded. I wasn’t. I was a regular employee slaving away 70-hour weeks and just happened to be driving my father’s car. I said I didn’t have the money - in my very teeny weeny pleading voice. They whispered among themselves (about 5 cops) and apparently agreed to a lesser amount. One of them… the most lewd-looking one of all, approached me and said “O sige 15 thousand na lang. Yung totoo nga e 50K ang bail dyan kaso aregluhin na lang natin”.

How to avoid exam stress or anxiety?

January 25, 2007

Many of us experience the so-called “exam anxiety or stress”. This is one of the problems, especially among students. I think it is just a natural occurrence because it’s man’s nature to fear failures. Sometimes, anxiety can also be our drive for excellence. We get anxious, and anxiety pressures us to do better. But as the saying goes, “too much is bad.” If you worry too much, you get mentally blocked. Mental block is not just an effect of caffeine overdose, or a sleepless night, but also anxiety over the exam per se can cause it.

1. Have your own study habits and make sure that they will work for you. No two people have the same study habit, one’s ways may not work on the other. The importance of having your own study habits is it makes everything organized, and when organization can make you relax and concentrate more. You will less likely miss out the important things you should learn.

2. Avoid cramming. Cramming means pressure, and pressure means anxiety. When you cram, you tend to forget other important things to learn. Again, thinking that you can’t do everything with just couple of hours or days, you will be anxious. The ideal way not to cram is allotting at least 2 hours per day for studying, depending on the demands of your course.

Nostalgia Bloggista: Ala Paredes

January 25, 2007

Name: Angela ‘Ala’ Paredes
Blog: http://ala-ism.pansitan.net

1. Where did you grow up, and what made that place special?
I grew up on Katipunan, and it’s the best place to grow up on earth! Growing up on a university belt is to grow up in a place that’s forever dynamic and young. Plus, there are a million cheap restaurants to eat at, and every service in earth available, from book-binding to printing tarpaulin. Plus, you always have a beautiful place to escape to, either Ateneo or UP campus. Katipunera forever!

2. What was your favorite tv show, cartoon, or children’s show growing up? What did you like about these shows that made them your favorite?
I watched Jem and the Holograms religiously. She was Barbie gone glamrock! Ang cool lang niya talaga. She had everything, a glampop band, big pink hair, high-tech earrings, and a boyfriend who was in love with both her and her alter-ego. I have 3 Jem t-shirts :-)

Oh, and I also loved SHAIDER, and came as Annie for Halloween 2 years ago. My boyfriend was Shaider, and we won 10,000 pesos at a costume contest for it.

Starbucks strawberry shortcake

January 23, 2007

My sweet tooth was screaming bloody murder the other day from an all-day salty foodfest so I strolled to the nearest starbucks to get myself some pastry and coffee of course.

I was inspecting the assortment of pastries and desserts over the glass cover when a pink sliver caught my eye. I got caught staring and of course was treated to a dialogue of how much pleasure I would get from eating their “apparently” sugar free cake.

Try it!

Original Pinoy Music. Behind the music.. is my past, present, perhaps future.. my life. I listed some of the songs and bands na naging part na of my life. Hearing their songs probably means one thing, di ako bingi.

FEEL NA FEEL (Manilyn Reynes)
“..feel na feel ko, walang biro mahal kita” as the lyrics of the song goes.. probably reminds me of my early childhood when I’m still in elementary during the early 90s. I was 6 I think. I never had my kindergarten and went to school as a visitor, a preparatory period before going to the 1st grade in elementary. Remember the twins, Richard and Raymond Gutierrez? I think this was the song that reminds me about their movie when they were just kids. Can still remember my first baon kept inside my pack.. a bread and an orange juice while listening to the song played every morning.

Grin Department
“..miss miss sa loob ng jeepney, sana naman ako’y bigyan pansin.” 6th Grade when I started singing this song from home to school. When I started to have crushes and lyrics flooded your brain while looking at your crush, katabi mo classmate mo, yells the last part of the chorus “tingin naman dyan..”

Chapter 4 - Curfew Passes

Jeans were jeans were jeans. But not designer jeans. Not DESIGNER jeans! It was a new concept back then and I happened to land in the middle of Manila just at a time when Ready to Wear was about to burst forth in all its glory. Considering that jeans were the new “uniform” then it was about time to inject a bit of pizzazz into the arena. The first good idea I had was to make jeans for women in women’s sizes! Not an outlandish idea but something that hadn’t been done before. Previously they’d have to buy a pair of men’s jeans and have the waist taken in two or three inches. Great for the customer but hell for production double the patterns, double the everything. “How come,” I was asked, “is it REALLY necessary?” “After all.” etc etc etc. Bahala na. How often was I to come across THAT particular expression!

Pinoy ka ba?

January 21, 2007

I accompanied my kids today to a children’s party for my 2 nephews. Like most kids parties nowadays, there was a magician hired to provide entertainment. I did not expect anything different but this one was.

First of all, he wasn’t dressed as a clown nor was he dressed in purple robes with gold stars. Secondly, he did the usual tricks with the handkerchiefs, balloon and doves, but he also did the balloon art himself. One thing that stood out to me was how he was able to educate and at the same time entertain the kids. I actually learned several things today because of him.

story behind a photo

January 21, 2007

paking1.jpg i have always been on the lookout for absurd or amusing signs, and this image shouted out to me…

this should have been pretty funny, what with the way it was presented… but there is a story behind this photo [isn’t there always??]…

this image was taken in a mall in Pioneer Street in Mandaluyong… the wife and i already saw this the last time we were there, but unfortunately, we don’t have a camera with us… we thought it was pretty funny the last time, and still is funny up to now… if not only for the lady guard you see at the right edge of the picture…
