Towards a Standards Compliant Web
We have a plan to build a group of web standards geeks advocates here in the Philippines. We’ve had a couple of talks regarding it though no concrete plan has been made yet. We hope to be an excellent resource of the Filipinos who want to learn how to build standards-compliant websites. There are still a lot of things to be considered, but the important thing is that we’re all motivated to push through this thing. We hope to invite individuals who also advocate and love web standards to join us in our journey towards a better web.

Kung Hei Fat Choi is NOT Happy New Year

Kung hei fat choi is always mistaken by non-Chinese as a translation for Happy New Year.
I got so used to Kung Hei Fat Choi when I was still in the Philippines. Most Chinese in the Philippines belong to either the Fujianese or Cantonese dialect groups of the Han nationality. As many as 98.5% of the Chinese in the Philippines trace their ancestry to the southern part of Fujian province, according to Wikipedia.
Here in Singapore, Mandarin is the common language used to unify the various Chinese dialect groups. The first two days of the Chinese New Year are public holidays. The Chinese Year celebrations are marked by visits to kin, relatives and friends, and the liberal use of the color red. Red packets (hong bao: Mandarin; ang pow: Cantonese) are given to juniors and children by the married and elders. A reunion dinner is held on the eve of the lunar new year. Yum!

Dekada ‘70 A Not So ’70s Film
Ah! Here we are. Excellent! Here was a movie about a family struggling to live a normal life during the hardships of martial law in the ’70s. Wow! I couldn’t get over the fact that someone had finally made a film that was set in ”70s Manila . That’s a damn huge undertaking. For someone who is absolutely fascinated with the ”70s (and also lived through it), this film really sparked my interest. But then I started thinking hard… I tried my darndest to remember the last really good Filipino film I saw that was actually made in the last decade. The last one I saw worth remembering was Manila By Night, City After Dark: Ishmael Bernal’s masterpiece, which was made in the year 1980. I couldn’t help but ask myself: “How good… or how bad could Dekada ”70 be?” Would Star Cinema be able to deliver a critically acclaimed film? Would they really be able to capture ’70s Manila ?! I sniffed around for online film reviews, and just as I suspected: every single one had praised the movie using up all the good adjectives in the dictionary. One film critic even praised it as if it were the best Filipino film ever made! Too many good reviews and not one single bad one had me suspicious. I started to have my doubts about the film, so naturally I had to find out for myself, right? So in one click, I ordered the movie be delivered to me; the spoils of modern technology.
Two days later I found it in my mailbox. I wasted no time and immediately began to watch the film that had tugged at my curiosity a few days earlier. I reminded myself… “Keep an open mind.” The film begins; I watch closely.

I was gravely disappointed that I missed the better part of the pilot episode of Sine Totoo, GMA-7’s newest public affairs program that showcases the station’s award-winning episodes of its award-winning documentary shows, and is hosted by Howie Severino, one of my most-admired journalists in the Philippines. I was so intent on fixing up some things on my blog that I totally forgot all about it.
