Intense and heart pounding Grey’s Anatomy

February 22, 2007

Last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy that was shown in Star World was an episode you should not have missed.

It was literally magnetic. You could not pull away from all the emotions evoked from this episode.

It was the day that Meredith was going to die… or so we thought.

Grey’s Anatomy…

The travelling sardine can

February 21, 2007

Eyes pulsating, heavy head, nearness to yawn or not, tears about to fall(okey that may be too much),are only a few things I experience after office. For me to get home; I ride the Metro Train, most of the time, to head to my destination faster. But everything has its own price to pay. Hence, I’d like to give an overview about my usual experiences each time I aboard the train. Its starts with purchasing a ticket, if ever you don’t have the stored value ticket with you. During rush hours there would be around 20 to 25 people all lined up just to purchase. After purchase, here is where the real battle begins. Before reaching the turnstile, around 120(if you’re lucky) to 200 people from work line up to pass thru it. Tiny steps until you reach it. You’ve got to shove your arms so no one cuts in line. The idiom breathing at your neck becomes an actual act. You need to learn how to control your breathing not to inhale other people’s scent, unless you enjoy it as some studies say. When you finally reach the turnstile, you got to open your bag and have it inspected by the guards. These inspections were implemented, since the bombing a few years ago by terrorists. Upon reaching the platform [read]

The Universe Conspires

February 21, 2007

…that I go back to being something I used to be.

I was watching Reporter’s Notebook late last night when one of the topics covered caught my interest: youngsters joining the New People’s Army, of which the rebellion is said to be the longest-running [communist] insurgency in the whole of Asia. Progressive-minded college students think that the true struggle against the three basic problems evils of the Philippine society (Feudalism, bureaucrat capitalism, and imperialism) is in the mountains. They’ve joined Kabataang Makabayan, an underground movement of armed and unarmed Filipino youth for revolutionary change in the society. Remember Bamboo’s newest single, Tatsulok, which I’ve given a short explanation of? They want to invert the triangle. To empower the oppressed Filipinos. To fight. But they believe that the peaceful and nonviolent struggle is not enough anymore - they think that armed struggle is the answer. They’re now literally laying their lives on the line. One interviewee, when asked why he joined KM, said something like

Considering how high the tuition fee is, how can I graduate? And if ever I’d graduate, where would I get a job?

Two words: stark reality.

From Waikiki With Love: Remembering Tom Babauta

February 21, 2007

 By: Guillermo Ramos

For decades the Philippine movie industry has been graced by foreign “actors” who want to try their luck in local showbiz. In the 60’s you had John Saxon, who appeared as the token Caucasian in movies like El Pinoy Matador, a Dolphy movie shot entirely in Spain; and the Pinoy spaghetti western Sergio Leone take-offs starring Chiquito. In the 70’s you had Sajid Khan, an Indian looker who appeared in mindless romantic comedies with Nora Aunor and Vilma Santos. His career in the Philippines didn’t last long because Filipinos are inherently racist and not very keen on actors who have dark skin. He was displaced in the public’s affections by Junior the American singer.

In the 80’s you had Tom Babauta, whose talent hung delicately on his cheekbones, triceps and his “big kahuna.”

Missing my family for the nth time…

February 20, 2007

The alarm went on at around 4:45am and I had this feeling of not going to stand up from bed. I just hugged my son while feeding him. I look at my 9-month old daugther while she was sound asleep. She seem very peaceful sleeping and that seem to start a very good day for me.

Cesar Montano makes fun of politics

February 20, 2007

Yesterday, I watched Unang Hirit interview Cesar Montano to ask him about his decision to run for Senator under the Administration party - Team Unity.

If the interview was not at all related to politics you would even be slightly interested and amused and might feel like you were listening to a showbiz segment. However, it was related to politics and there was nothing amusing in it.

What does Singapore Permanent Residency mean to a Filipino?

February 20, 2007

One known reason (if it’s not the main reason) of why Filipino workers take Singapore Permanent Residency (PR) is security. If an employment pass (EP) holder leaves the company, the EP is canceled and he must leave Singapore unless he finds employment with another company.

This was addressed when the Singapore government introduced the Personal Employment Pass (PEP) scheme. The new PEP is not tied to the employer and will be granted on the holder’s individual merits. The PEP allows the holder to remain in Singapore for up to six months in between jobs to evaluate new employment opportunities.

Towards a Standards Compliant Web

February 18, 2007

We have a plan to build a group of web standards geeks advocates here in the Philippines. We’ve had a couple of talks regarding it though no concrete plan has been made yet. We hope to be an excellent resource of the Filipinos who want to learn how to build standards-compliant websites. There are still a lot of things to be considered, but the important thing is that we’re all motivated to push through this thing. We hope to invite individuals who also advocate and love web standards to join us in our journey towards a better web.

We’ve got the space, and now we only need the domain webstandards.org.ph. We’re accepting cash, lol. Sponsor, and you’ll get our love. For queries, don’t hesitate to email me at shari@misteryosa.com =)

Kung Hei Fat Choi is NOT Happy New Year

February 18, 2007

Congratulations and be prosperous!

Kung hei fat choi is always mistaken by non-Chinese as a translation for Happy New Year.

I got so used to Kung Hei Fat Choi when I was still in the Philippines. Most Chinese in the Philippines belong to either the Fujianese or Cantonese dialect groups of the Han nationality. As many as 98.5% of the Chinese in the Philippines trace their ancestry to the southern part of Fujian province, according to Wikipedia.

Here in Singapore, Mandarin is the common language used to unify the various Chinese dialect groups. The first two days of the Chinese New Year are public holidays. The Chinese Year celebrations are marked by visits to kin, relatives and friends, and the liberal use of the color red. Red packets (hong bao: Mandarin; ang pow: Cantonese) are given to juniors and children by the married and elders. A reunion dinner is held on the eve of the lunar new year. Yum!

Happy New Year!

Xin nian kuai le! (Mandarin) Sun nin fai lok! (Cantonese)

Dekada ‘70 A Not So ’70s Film

February 18, 2007

Ah! Here we are. Excellent! Here was a movie about a family struggling to live a normal life during the hardships of martial law in the ’70s. Wow! I couldn’t get over the fact that someone had finally made a film that was set in ”70s Manila . That’s a damn huge undertaking. For someone who is absolutely fascinated with the ”70s (and also lived through it), this film really sparked my interest. But then I started thinking hard… I tried my darndest to remember the last really good Filipino film I saw that was actually made in the last decade. The last one I saw worth remembering was Manila By Night, City After Dark: Ishmael Bernal’s masterpiece, which was made in the year 1980. I couldn’t help but ask myself: “How good… or how bad could Dekada ”70 be?” Would Star Cinema be able to deliver a critically acclaimed film? Would they really be able to capture ’70s Manila ?! I sniffed around for online film reviews, and just as I suspected: every single one had praised the movie using up all the good adjectives in the dictionary. One film critic even praised it as if it were the best Filipino film ever made! Too many good reviews and not one single bad one had me suspicious. I started to have my doubts about the film, so naturally I had to find out for myself, right? So in one click, I ordered the movie be delivered to me; the spoils of modern technology.

Two days later I found it in my mailbox. I wasted no time and immediately began to watch the film that had tugged at my curiosity a few days earlier. I reminded myself… “Keep an open mind.” The film begins; I watch closely.

Ten Things to Do When Stuck in Traffic

February 18, 2007

trafficjam.jpgWe had so much fun making the first episode of “The K Zone,” we just have to follow it up with another. I’m kinda amazed at how much we have loosened up in this second episode. Maybe it’s the topic. Or maybe we’re really getting the hang of it. You be the judge.

Show notes: We discuss some fun and crazy ways to do when stuck in traffic. Think of the loooooong hours on EDSA, or Quezon Avenue, or…wherever.

Documentaries

February 18, 2007

I was gravely disappointed that I missed the better part of the pilot episode of Sine Totoo, GMA-7’s newest public affairs program that showcases the station’s award-winning episodes of its award-winning documentary shows, and is hosted by Howie Severino, one of my most-admired journalists in the Philippines. I was so intent on fixing up some things on my blog that I totally forgot all about it.

A special day that recognizes, celebrates, honors, inspires and empowers women.

I was awestruck at the smell of confidence, success, sophistication and strength.
