The Bonjing and His Pop

I had one of the most toxic duties yesterday, not because of the difficulty of the cases but because of the volume of patients seen and the degree of which each patient demanded attention.

A person I recall the fastest is actually a patient’s father. His quirkiness arrived late in the morning with his 27-year old, able-bodied son. He spoke with a slurred authoritative tone.

Nagsimba ka na ba ha (Did you hear mass already)?” He asked me and the entire ER staff.

And he spoke to a poor soul who claimed that he hadn’t heard mass, “Naku, malaking kasalanan ‘yan kapag hindi ka nagsimba ng Linggo (It’s a great sin if you don’t hear mass on a Sunday).”

“In this line of work, duty comes first,” a defiant nurse told him. I was already beginning to become irritated with this 50-something man who just stormed the ER with his son and began preaching to everyone the second he sat down that missing a Sunday mass is a great sin.

“Well, you could have heard a Saturday anticipated mass,” said the still cocky man.

“Not when still on duty, Sir,” the nurse politely answered but the distinct edge in the voice is almost ready to pop out and snag the cocky man at the throat, if he doesn’t stop his intrusive and inappropriate questions.
