5 Things I Miss About: Washington DC

March 23, 2007

It’s already vacation time/summer season and during these past few days I only have one place in mind to where to spend a great vacation — Washington DC. We had the chance to stay there for a couple of days (courtesy of my Mom’s high school buddy) during the 2005 holidays. There were a lot of people (though I heard that compared to spring break and during summer there were more people around) or tourists visiting the National Mall and you could definitely feel the patriotism of the Americans who were visiting the various national memorials and monuments to commemorate their heroes and presidents. The experience left a mark on my whole existence (uy ang lalim! pramis! hehehe). I asked myself why can’t we ever build a decent place to remember our national heroes like this one? Of course we have the Rizal Park but can’t we build something that wouldn’t look anything like a circus and a motel with a statue in it? Anyways here’s a couple of things that I observed in DC which I would definitely want to see in our country in the next few years (wish ko lang!)…

in retrospect… » oops!! sorry ’bout that…

March 23, 2007

have you ever done something stupid that costs your company millions of pesos worth of data??

if you have, then you prolly know how this computer technician in Alaska felt when, after formatting a hard disk, found out later on that it contained $38 billions worth of accounts of applicant information for an oil-funded sales account… it still wouldn’t have been so bad except for one thing: the daily backup tapes were unreadable!!

we all know that Horatio Caine [played by David Caruso] is the epitome of an uber-cool super cop when it comes to busting criminals and solving seemingly unsolvable crimes…

Ponds 7-day age miracle product

March 22, 2007

So what is wrong with this picture?

The first time I watched the commercial by Pond’s, my eyes were pulled to watch as my mind quickly registered the words “miracle” while watching a husband suddenly pay special attention to his girlfriend or wife who were apparently using this age-miracle product. Then I heard the warning bells…. Ringggging in my head. Halt!

What’s a woman got to do, ha?

March 22, 2007

“Thank your grandmothers and mothers who have lived and paved the way for you ladies to have a better life out there.”

That’s something I said to a class some months ago. Y’know, the fun part about teaching is that sometimes you get engaged in this impromptu soliloquy where instant insights lead to sudden outbursts of authentic talk–”me” talking.

The Oracle and The Architect

March 21, 2007

An SMS conversation dated March 7:

Friend: Pangalan mo sa phone ko, Oracle. Si —— ay the Architect. (Your name in my phone, Oracle. —— is the Architect.)

Me: Wow! Eh di ibig sabihin lagi kami at war niyan? (Wow! So that means we’re always at war?)

Friend: Yes, without the knowledge that one complements the other :-).

No, we haven’t really been at war with one another. But as days pass and we get into more conversations (tons of talks we’ve had over seemingly random topics that were actually roundabout ways of getting into one place), all the more I realize it does make sense: I am the Oracle and he is the Architect in our own matrix. Two souls whose lives are intertwined but will never really be together, simply because we aren’t. Not because of the meaningfulness, the rightfulness, the wrongness, the should-haves, the ought-tos, or the untimeliness. We just aren’t.

I’ll have to describe both personalities.

Sunday Drinking Spree

March 21, 2007

Last Sunday after my Microbiology and Parasitology class, my classmates invited me to hangout at Pier One Bar and Grill. When I asked them what would they be doing they said, “magkwekwentuhan lang naman”. Since I had nothing to do that night I decided that a little chat wouldn’t hurt so I tagged along. We immediately went to the Fort to look for Pier One, after reaching the bar we asked for a couple of San Mig Light but then we the waiter wouldn’t serve us. When we asked why he told us he can’t because we were still wearing our scrubs (seriously, wtf?!). We offered to let them see our ID’s to prove that we were old enough to have a drink. I was thinking, I’m 22 and I was the youngest among the bunch (some of my classmates even have kids in high school) and they wouldn’t serve us beer! Later the waiter told us that it was city ordinance not to serve alcoholic drinks to those who are in uniform (yep, even those in the military). Kudos to them for upholding a lousy city ordinance :)

Ma Mon Luk this time

March 21, 2007

I had a chance to eat again at one of my fave restos in the city, Ma Mon Luk Restaurant. Their remaining brach is at Banawe, Quezon Avenue. And I can’t help but reminisce on my childhood.

Before the boom of the fastfood industry, our family used to dine frequently at Ma Mon Luk Restaurant after shopping at Cubao (which was the in place during the 80’s) . I could still see myself sitting on the high chair anticipating for my siopao and enjoying the aroma of the place. …[more]

Short Story: At The End Of The Bar

March 20, 2007

Cold beer. That’s what it was. Nothing like a cold beer to end a long day. Back in the old days, he was a record holder for downing the most bottles of beer in 10 minutes! When it came to drinking marathons, he was always the last man standing. When they went out clubbing, his tab always had the most number of digits because he drank too much. It was just his fourth bottle and he was starting to feel a bit full.

He started drinking when he was sixteen. By the time he turned nineteen, he was a Beer Drinking Title Holder. He found it weird that at 26, he was having difficulty handling his drink. He laughed. Maybe I peaked to early, he thought as he drank the entire contents of the bottle in just one swig. He signalled the bartender for another bottle while chewing thoughtfully on some peanuts. continue reading At The End Of The Bar…

Scam Alert: You won $500! Yahoo!® Mail congratulates you!

March 20, 2007

You won $500! Yahoo!® Mail congratulates you!, the subject of an e-mail I have received yesterday said. Attractive subject, isn’t it? Curious about it, I hurriedly open the e-mail, of course with excitement to see the price I have “won”. It’s $500 for God’s sake! Although, I was already suspecting that it was fraud.

The e-mail said that I was one of those “randomly” selected members who won $500. I was one of the 12 top winners accounts who will get cash prizes from them, it says.

Blogger.com Hijacked by Scammers

March 20, 2007

Be careful with what blogs you visit. Google’s Blogger.com is reportedly being hijacked by scammers to spread malware through fake blogs. Security experts are calling this the “fake blog scam”. Blog hopping or surfing hasn’t been this dangerous.

Scammers are creating what would seem as a normal-looking blogs with ordinary topics like “Star Wars, school, furniture, Christmas, cars and girlfriends” to host a variety of script-initiated malware. What’s scary is that it’s virtually impossible for visitors to spot the danger of these blogs and these malware infested blogs are said to be in the hundreds.

Good food at Good Earth

March 19, 2007

We brought a client out to lunch last week. I wasnt the host so I was prepared to eat anywhere - not really thinking about a specific place I would like to recommend. Plus, I was raring to try something new - mainly for the purposes of writing about it (ok ok I also love to eat).

It was a restaurant that served Chinese food so I wasnt really expecting much. Its not that I dont like Chinese food. Its just that my father loves it so most of our family lunches and dinners more or less involved something chinese… chopsuey with seacucumber, noodles galore, beef with broccoli and a lot more. Not to mention our trips to chinatown in manila that led us to authentic chinese restaurants. With all that history on my palate, I normally do not prefer eating Chinese when the opportunity to eat somewhere else is present.

Missing Pinoy Komiks? Read LITTLE JUNGLE at Nostalgia Manila!

March 19, 2007

Our friend (Komikero) Gerry Alanguilan reports: “It is unfortunate, but the collapse of the old komiks industry is all but complete. All the old komiks you used to know like Funny Komiks, Pilipino Komiks, Tagalog Klasiks, Hiwaga, Espesyal, etc… are now all gone. The companies that published them are either closed, or have closed their comics departments.” Nostalgia Manila supports our dear comic artists and friends who are fighting hard to revive the Filipino Komiks Industry.

So in this time of great loss and extinction of a favorite Pinoy past-time, Nostalgia Manila treats you to something truly special. In the tradition of Funny Komiks and hilarious Sunday comics serials, Nostalgia Manila brings you an original called Little Jungle!

Divorce in the Philippines: A Must or Not?

March 18, 2007

A few days ago, a newfound textmate and I had (and are still having) an argument on whether divorce should be made available in the country or not. He told me that marriage is and should always be sacred, whatever fucking happens. Coincidentally, I read two mentions about it in friends’ blogs. Non-Filipinos expressed their surprise: Divorce is illegal in the Philippines? Butbutbut [insert a how question here]?

On family abandonment in the Philippines

March 17, 2007

What is now a topic in several articles, of several public speakers in the past months has always been a known fact by the Filipino people. Family abandonment is not new to you and me. It should not be and if it is to you, then you must have been in a cave for the past years or are too young to be reading this post.

I was in Singapore on vacation in 2001 when my eyes were first opened to this alarming statistic…

10 safety tips you should know about

March 17, 2007

1 . Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!

2. Learned this from a tourist guide in New Orleans: If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse,
DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you. Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won’t see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc.) DON’T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.

Election season…bull…t time….

March 17, 2007

I really just have to vent out my feelings about what have been and still is happening to our country at this time… Election season has a way of really making me feel so angry, frustrated, helpless and hopeless! This is the time wherein the two most exploited word – God and people are used by almost anyone who’s got certain selfish agenda to promote.

Religious sectors would use their influence by letting everyone believe that whomever they endorse is God’s choice ( though they’re into semantics now by saying choose wisely but really suggesting their chosen ones, thats why politicians seek their blessings. Religion and politics are symbiotic- one cannot exist w/out the other.) while politicians would tell everyone that they represent the voice of the people and that they are running for a position so as to be able to help people! BULLSHIT!!! Religious sectors need to engage in politics so as to protect their interest –  continued existence of their business w/c is basically religion, hospitals, schools -power, influence and tax free properties while politicians want power, wealth, influence and recognition! These are just their main agendas but what irks me truly the most is the fact that those intellectual delinquents, unqualified celebrities and personalities are elected by the very PEOPLE who supposedly have the power to choose their leaders in a democratic society!
