Internet vs. TV Time

April 7, 2007

In a recent post by Red Cardinal Marketing, they quote a British survey conducted by BBC about the Internet eating into TV viewing time. In that report, 43% of respondents watch less TV as a result of watching Internet/Mobile video and around 22% watch Internet/Mobile video either ‘occasionally’ or ‘Once a week or more’. Finally, 28% in the 18-24 age bracket watch Internet/Mobile video once a week or more.

Even if this report had respondents from a highly-developed nation like the UK with an obviously higher rate of Internet penetration and usage, the same phenomenon can likely start here in our country.

Now that broadband companies and telcos are aggresively pushing their products and services (and ‘growing the business’ out of Metro Manila), we can see more and more Pinoy presence and interest in web video. Youtube, obviously, is on top of that hill.

The beauty of having a DSL connection is you can “personalize” your “TV Stations”. Consider it as your own TV, if you will… where you choose *what* you watch and *when* you want to watch it.

Case in point was my long Holy Week vacation spent just relaxing at home. When I wake up, I’d watch some episodes (which I downloaded via torrent). After that, I head to G4TV to watch some gaming videos or a couple of segments of my favorite gaming shows. Then its off to youtube to do research on the latest game videos for Ragnarok 2, for example. After dinner, it’s random video-hunting or doing search on whatever tickles my fancy.

I’d sure love an application or service that collects my favorite “web channels” (like a video feed or something).

I’m sure you have your own stories about your personalized preferences of web video-viewing.

Cheers!
