Blogging Then, and Blogging Now

Note: Discussion of the “establishment” of Web Standards Philippines has started. If you’re an advocate of standards, or if you want to learn with us, email me at shari@misteryosa.com and I’ll add you to our Basecamp.

I’m a personal blogger who gets frustrated that personal blogging must have some kind of a guideline or something, when it should be personal in the first place, and “anything goes” is the key. That it’s always a matter of personal, individual, preferences. Or maybe it’s just me. Sometimes I lose interest in blogging because when I started doing it years ago, it’s just a hobby, not a “profession”. It’s fun. It’s therapeutic. The initial reason why (almost) everyone blogs is that it’s their outlet. Now almost everyone’s just doing it because of the money they can get.

I think we should not interchange or get confused with “blogging guidelines or standards” vs “web standards”. The two are totally different.

“Web standards” are code related, or compliance with W3C.org. If majority of the world or no one will follow “web standards”, we will see countless of sites that will look weird under different browsers.

That’s where web standard comes in. Through W3C, the authoritative web standard group, they develop the codes allowed to be used in creating your website. These codes are then given to the browser vendors and they will implement it as per W3C dictates, and we all get the same results. (note: there are elements wherein W3C leaves the visual result to the vendor, hence there are browser differences.)

Web-standard is a must for every site owner, it is like the law on building houses, establishments or high-rise buildings. And through the “web standards”, site creation improves.

Right now, HTML 5 and HTML 6 are being developed, which will open and give us more control and more creativity. Without it, we’ll be stuck with HTML 1, and sites like this won’t be possible.
