Questions For Mayor Fred Lim
May 19, 2007
As a Manileño who has seen three mayors at its helm — Mel Lopez, Fred Lim and Lito Atienza — there was no doubt that Atienza built on what Lim has started and brought Manila back into the tourist map and initiated cultural revival and urban development.
I once thought that Manila was a lost cause because of urban decay but I was surprised by the transformation of the city — Roxas Boulevard, the city’s plazas and the public wet markets in particular. There is one thing that I disliked during Atienza’s term – it’s the proliferation of pedicabs along national and city roads.
I hesitantly voted for Ali Atienza, not because I did not appreciate his father’s accomplishments, but because of too much politicking and overexposure (like riding on the popularity of Pacquiao who is also losing in his congressional bid). To me, the accomplishments, which are obvious, should speak for itself
Now that it was clear that Senator Lim is set to take over the governance of Manila and after the Atienzas have accepted the defeat, these are the questions that are bugging my mind and given a chance, I would like to ask Mayor Lim personally:
- What will happen now to Baywalk and the other projects that beautify Manila?
- What will happen to Unibersidad de Manila (formerly City College of Manila)? Will it go back to the old PNB building along Escolta?
- Are we going to see a radical change in governance?
I have high regards for Senator Lim because he changed the image of Ermita and addressed the garbage problem of the city. I also voted for him in his bid for the Senate in the last 2004 elections. Am hoping that he will not be like some of our national leaders whose first project in office is to “undo†what his/her predecessors have accomplished, even if these projects have been beneficial.

Got something to say?

To whom it may concern
I have the knowledge, that the mayor of Manila will not have time to read this, and so i pray, that in some form, this gets to him. I understand that the Mayor is carrying out several projects in order to facilitate a better capital for the Philippines. The most obvious being that of the clean up of the Bay walk.
It is obvious that the mayor feels it is time for Manila to acquire it’s long-lost image of being one of Asia’s most diverse, and unique city. We do have the potential and the means to be in the lime-light again.
The main thing that bothers me, is the way Manila doesn’t do enough to include edifices such as the Metropolitan Theatre, Luneta Hotel, Jones Bridge (Puente Grande is nicer to the ears), and other long-lost, decaying buildings (which once had that glamourous majestic air) in its ambitious Tourism Plans. The main reasons why tourist ARE tourists, is because they want to experience the different things which makes a city so unique. These once architectural marvels of Asia have so much potential to become grade A tourist attractions, but I feel that the government doesn’t appreciate these works of art.
The Jones Bridge had a quality which filipinos were proud of. AFter the second world war, its reconstruction was rushed, and the aesthetic qualities it once had; ignored. Its a shame. That bridge was a national treasure, and the people at the top forgot all about it. I saw pictures of the Puente Grande as it once was. So majestic. So Grande. Such bridges dont exist in Asia, and if they do, they are countable. Puente Grande is the longest spanning bridge of the Ilog Pasig. It doesnt deserve the state its in right now; steel supports visible, with its nuts and bolts sticking out like a sore thumb. Its funny how there is a plaque on the bridge to recognise it as a tourist attraction- but when one actually looks at it, they question themselves, HUH? Whats so great about that? Its badly painted, and where is the grandeur which this plaque boasts that the bridge has? Its tacky, and an embarrassment to those who have worked tirelessly to design such a bridge.
Manila has to do more than to clean itself up. It has to preserve its culture. These structures embody our heritage, and our ancestors’ tireless endeavors to put Manila at the top. Why can’t we uphold and maintain their vision?
My family voted for Lim because he promised to rid the city of drug pushers. Only to find out that one of his sons(Manny) was indeed part of a syndication and was caught drug pushing in Binondo. Upon my research, I came across an article that his other son(Nestor) was also caught in San Francisco.
It’s such a lame excuse that they’re old already and they’re out of his jurisdiction. Aside from that he vowed again not to lift a finger to help him in his case. However, it’s so obvious that he has given him his lawyer. Secondly, how come the case is now shifted to drug using when he was pushing?
Obviously, it was not just a finger but the City’s whole office working to make sure Manny Lim can either go out on bail or be able to avoid the cases. I’m pretty sure the old man will start blaming PDEA for lowering his case to drug using.
Now we know that all those issues about Mayor Lim are true. I just can’t help but blame myself for voting that old, grumpy, and dirty mayor. No wonder drugs is proliferating now in the city worse than before. Hopefully people don’t forget this incident and hopefully people like me learn to vote wisely and decisively.
Definitely, Lim has lost my vote and my family’s for the next elections.
Actually I did not vote for Lim because I know the Chinese businessman that he almost abducted after his 1B + pesos worth of investment in Equitable PCI almost got lost because of Equitable’s fate. In lieu of killing this poor man, he had to give up his huge house in Forbes Park, house in the US plus and they also had to give him so much money just to spare their lives. The house now in Forbes is being occupied by one of his sons.. who obviously uses it as well for selling or pushing illegal drugs… apparently Lim is now in the US or “taiwan” ( yeah right… to claim back the money that he asked his Mang Turing to keep ( May God bless Mang Turing’s soul though because he died just recently.. ) My update on that matter now is that the money that Lim asked Mang Turing to keep was passed on to Mang Turing;s sons who are apparentlty not so honest people.. Oh My, Karma is working so fast… I wonder if the media would actually consider putting this on their headliness… but then again, Lim is capable of killing…. maybe they wont release the news.. anyhow, if you want to verify my scoop, why not look for MANG TURING… and even look into George Co.. the owner and the head huncho of Equitable PCI Bank… O, God Bless his poor soul…
excuse me but before Atienza became Mayor, Manila was still ugly and hopeless… It was Atienza who actually gave the city life again.. so sad to say though that Lim killed it once again.. I cannot wait for 2010… I will make sure to help Atienza this time!!
