Ouch

June 30, 2007

I am walking along Tandang Sora Avenue when my eyes catch a glimpse of a large green road sign that reads: “Walang Tawiran: Nakamamatay” I stare at it for a moment, then a memory about this same place flashed into my mind. I smile to myself, almost giggling. I see a newly-constructed overpass where people, among which students, vendors, and street children pass by each other.

I then remember what happened to me at this same place no more than a year ago, almost as exactly as it have been…

The January sun had been shining mightily and dominantly, surrounded by the cotton-like cumulus clouds. It was apparently rush hour. People of different faces and dresses were in each and every place our eyes could land on; people were as busy as red ants unceasingly preparing food for an upcoming calamity.

“Yes, a disaster seems rapidly approaching us, approaching me,” I thought dreamily. As a matter of fact, a friend and I were standing on the length of Tandang Sora Avenue, just after our least-liked afternoon classes. We were preparing to cross the wide road before us (as there was obviously no nearby overpass or flyover yet that time), without a clue what consequences lie ahead.

Most suddenly and most unfortunately, before I knew it, my feet have brought my body across the street, without my slightest command; I could even be almost certain that it might have been an undiagnosed nervous system disorder of mine, or perhaps a push of the devil whatsoever. Whichever the case, it happened. There was a bright orange vehicle blocking my left-side field of vision, making it impossible for me to see or foresee any fast-approaching vehicle. It was also too late for my friend to grab my arm and to pull me back into the side street….

Does RSS Rob Your Blog of Visitors?

June 30, 2007

“Won’t RSS Feeds rob your site of traffic? Matanong lang. nyaha.”

This was an interesting question brought up by Choldmhist which he left as a comment on my post “Setting up RSS on Your Blog”.

RSS has proven to be a really helpful and useful feature to bloggers over the past years. Instead of scanning through your blogs for updates, RSS makes a life easier by automatically sending all the content of a reader’s favorite blogs to a feed reader of their preference.

(Don’t know what I’m talking about? Learn more about RSS and Feeds here!)

There is only one slight drawback in using RSS, however. Readers are less inclined to visit blogs because they already have the content being sent to them automatically. In other words, they have no other reason to visit your blog anymore.

So regarding Choldmhist’s question, yes, RSS does rob a blog of its visitors.

Does RSS Rob Your Blog of Visitors
Aha! So it was you who has been robbing my blog! To think that we trusted you!

So, why are other blogs insisting of having RSS when it has a negative effect on a blog’s visit rate? Why is Pinoy Blogero still offering those free customized feed buttons when he already knows the harm that RSS can bring to blogs?

Vox Bikol and its online quiz

June 30, 2007

Crossposted from my weblog.

QUICK: What is the English word for “baligang,” that dark violet bitter fruit that tastes better when shaken vigorously with salt?

  • berry
  • plum
  • cherry
  • grape

If you answered “berry,” you got it right, as I did when I took this Bikol quiz that forms part of the newly built online home of Vox Bikol. Vox is the weekly newspaper I used to edit and for which I now write a weekly column.

Unfortunately, that was one of the only four I got right out of 10, prompting me this terse message: “Kaipuhan po na mag-adal pa nin bikol.” (You need to study Bikol more.)

The site is still work in progress, Julma Narvadez said, thanks to the effort of Fr. Tebelin and the Ina nin Bikol Foundation, Inc. which now publishes the paper. Julma’s late father, Joe, used to be the Vox publisher when I was with the paper, until his untimely demise.

Prudence, Again, In The Spotlight!

June 30, 2007

And it’s because I’ve been tagged by Makoy with a meme that focuses the spotlight on the one being tagged. This meme is called “In the Spotlight“, as created by Christy of Christy’s Coffee Break.

Come to think of it…every blogger wanted some attention focused on them. Otherwise, why would they blog? Just to keep an online journal of what they do and of their thoughts everyday? Of course, not. If it’s the only reason, then they should have kept a traditional journal, instead.

Every blogger needs and wants to be heard. And so, I think this meme will serve all bloggers well.

The rules are:

  1. If you’re tagged, make it clear in your post that the title of the meme is “In The Spotlight”.
  2. Link back, of course!
  3. Do not cut and paste the rules! Explanations are at Christy’s blog.
  4. Among the given questions, choose those which you would like to answer.
  5. When you’re done, tag 5 people you know to do this meme.

And the questions:

Plate Number on Helmets

June 30, 2007

As a motorcyclist I am affected and really pissed off by this resolution the MMDA had put up particularly to their top honcho Mr. Bayani Fernando. This thing is surely a descrimination to all law-abiding riders. Haven’t they know that this could also lead  to red-tape and corruption.

A motorcycle should have side-mirrors is definitely a YES, a rider must always wear a helmet is very good. But putting a number on the helmet is big NO-NO for me! What do they think of us, a Taxi!? Helmets are private property of the rider and besides it will ruin the design of the helmet and even lessen the durability because of the sticker.

Wendy: Saviour of PBB 2

June 29, 2007

We saw it in the news. PBB ratings are not quite as high as its previous ratings. Why you ask. Well if you watch a single episode of PBB 2, you would notice that it is not as interesting as PBB 1. First of, the current personalities inside the house are not a good mix. The PBB 1 housemates were much more funny, colorful, and real. The current housemates are so dull, boring, and safe. I guess you can say that the second batch of housemates are really playing the game. The problem I think is that the current batch of housemates have seen PBB 1 and all the other editions. Therefore, they are more prone to act cautiously.

Bloggers Exposed! Dos

June 29, 2007

Previously on Bloggers Exposed!

The Aftermath.

After a few pitchers of Jerbaxx, several plates of kropek, sisig and other pulutan, the group had to retire again to the minor-friendly McDonald’s to finish up the celebration. Some are drunk, some are sleepy (and grumpy) and everybody were just sooo excited to get a lick off the cake.

Those Casureco II prepaid meters

June 29, 2007

Crossposted from my weblog.

IN THE raging controversy at the Casureco II over an alleged P300,000 illegal disbursement used in the recent partylist election, one item that captured my interest is the purchase of some 100 prepaid meters by the current management, to the tune of more than P2 million, two years back.

Up to now, they remain unused, allegedly because of a software glitch.

Are we missing the forest for the trees here?

For a mere software glitch, the Casureco II management is letting a substantial capital investment, one that can bring it to stronger financial stability, rot away. This, I think, is an act more criminal than the rest.

Humans think: Discover Skepticism

June 29, 2007

skeptic.jpg

All our science, measured against reality, is primitive and childlike — and yet it is the most precious thing we have.

—Albert Einstein

For the open-minded, the site Skeptic - Extraordinary Claims, Revolutionary Ideas, and Promotion of Science is one of those websites worth your online reading time.

Web content includes features articles, reviews, or opinions on current events related to science and skepticism. The Skeptic Reading Room also features debates like:

In my particular interest is reading about creationism vs. evolution which have been the hot topic nowadays, with the noticeable increase in debates on the return of teaching creation based on the Bible as science in schools and the rise of creationist museums.

There are also, of course, a lot of articles that can introduce you to skepticism.

You can also subscribe to their mailing list, ESkeptic, and you’ll be sent their featured articles and reviews. I don’t think their magazine, the Skeptic, is available in the Philippines. However, you can subscribe to it online.

To know more, read “Discover Skepticism“.

I Was A Teenage Slut: Losing Virginity

June 29, 2007

My dear blogger friend SexyMom has tagged me with “The Weird Things About You” meme but sadly I remember I’ve done this one 48 years ago. That’s why I am making this compromise post just to make up the fact that I can no longer do this meme. This will be a walk to the memory lane and it dishes some juicy personal stuff about me. I know that I used to be a queen of the Nile and never talked alot about my past but I realised that it actually gives you this feeling of freedom. Breaking the chains of guilt from the past is quite a relief. And I don’t care anymore what people might think of me because I know that they too have some skeletons in their closets.

Fight for the Right to Live Free and Ride: The Jester-in-Exile Assails MMDA Resolution No. 07-07

June 28, 2007

First things first — let me turn into the Ghost Rider, but in this instance, I’ll be donning a toga instead of my leathers, but no less am I a biker.

Honorable justices of the Supreme Court.

I am a biker, a taxpayer, and a citizen of the Republic of the Philippines. I stand before you to petition the Court to declare MMDA Resolution No. 07-07 unconstitutional, and pray the court to prevent the infringement on my rights by the implementation of this resolution.

Article III, Section 1, of the Constitution says in unequivocal terms that “No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law, nor shall any person be denied the equal protection of the laws.” Read more

Gwen and Tom’s Business

June 28, 2007

Old Streets are losing its names to politicans. The good news is that the old Filipino Komiks is experiencing a revival.

Now, Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia and Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmena’s telenovela-like drama should be a good subject for Komiks strip. Let’s take a look at its present status.

Both agree that their brewing word war over provincial lots is not affecting business:

“The best economies in the world alawys have ongoing disputes. There’s no ifs or buts about it,” said the mayor. “We call it democracy.”

Meanwhile,

Governor Garcia said she didn’t see any slackening of investors’ interest in Cebu during recent conferences…like last week’s Philippine Investor’s conference.

Contrary to this, Cebu’s business leaders have a different take on the issue. Apparently, Like Cardinal Vidal, they want to end it. But Sun.Star Daily Opinion Editor Bong Wenceslao has a better idea - Why not let them Quarrel?

He argues that the Gwen-Tom war has resulted in a lot of positive things for the Cebuanos:

My Wandering Mind

June 28, 2007

just came back from the dead and I can’t believe it’s been 3 months since I last blog…

Well, my mind was just wandering around lately. I don’t see myself in the future the way I plan to be… The heck. What else can I say ‘living’ in this fucked up place.

And now I am complaining! Damn!

But the hell, I was dreaming too despite the fact most of the time my mind was wandering around… and I guess it’s worth posting. Just to keep myself reminded in the future that there was one time in my life that I have dreamed so much…

Quick Blog Tip: Creating Your Blogging Schedule

June 28, 2007

Creating your blogging schedule

If you are a regular reader of Pinoy Blogero, you may have notice that I always try to post something new every single day. With this much commitment, you may be thinking that I don’t have any more time left for other important things that a normal college student should have.

But in fact, I do.

I do this by making my very own personalized blogging schedule. This is to ensure that I could effectively budget my time and maximize all my time in doing more work.

Laying it all out
First, I lay out all my non-blogging activities that I have for the day on a sheet of paper with its corresponding schedules. I then lay out my blogging related activities and try to squeeze them into the free slots that can be found within the time table.

The first blogging related activities that I insert into the schedule are the ones that are of high priority. With this in mind, I label all those activities according to its priority.

  • Posting of articles (Very high)
  • Making a new article for the next day (Very high)
  • Visiting other blogs and establishing connections (high)
  • Repying to comments (high)
  • Promoting Pinoy Blogero to other blogs (medium)
  • Making a new artwork (medium)
  • Checking site stats (low)
  • Checking the mail (low)
  • Creating a feed button (low)
  • Eating, sleeping, thinking of school (very low)

    No Guilt For Selfishness

    June 28, 2007

Author’s note:  I’m publishing this article online now, since the newspaper editor to whom I submitted this article seemed to be uninterested in publishing it and did not reply to my email.

    *     *     *     *     *

Not too long ago, I wrote an article entitled, “M.D.’s on Strike: Why Doctors are Leaving and Why They Should Be Leaving”.  I posted it on my multiply blog and a mailing list I’m subscribed to.  Some received it positively, appreciating the risk to bring out an unpopular idea in the open (the only thing that perhaps hindered its offline publication is that I published it online first.  Also I have a sneaking suspicion that the newspaper opinion editor does not like bloggers).  I also got not so few violent reactions and was accused of neglect of my duties as citizen and abandoning my fellowmen.

I have a hunch that those who emailed or left me accusatory comments on my blogs meant to make me feel guilty of my “selfishness”.

But let me see, why do I need to be guilty thinking about myself?  It is in our nature to strive for self-preservation.  We are happy when we fulfill our basic needs and have work in keeping of our interests and joys.  By striving to work in another place which can provide for the needs of my family and I, I work for our survival.  By working on such place where my contributions to health care provision is better understood and appreciated, I work for my own happiness and personal growth.  Are these things evil?  Of course not.  And yet, people see my resolve to work abroad and to encourage others to do, too, if they can, as an indicator of selfishness.

According to these people who call me selfish, there’s already a dwindling number of health care professionals in the country so I should not be adding to the numbers who are already leaving.  They say I OUGHT to stay because it is my duty to my fellowmen to serve them.  They say I shouldn’t complain about being dirt poor because every doctor goes through that stage of being “dirt poor” anyway.  Note, however that those who told me to stay poor are those who are already on the other side of the globe, chilling in their parkas in the perpetual cold but can afford themselves laptops and a decent car to drive.

Saving Kids From Obesity Starts at Home

    June 28, 2007

Several years ago, the word “malnutrition” usually brings about images of poor African children, bone-thin with protruding bellies, weak with hunger as they lie wrapped in their mothers’ arms, equally malnourished, or lying listlessly on the desert sand amidst vultures, awaiting death to overcome them.  However, recent events caused us to conjure images of malnutrition as big, bulky humans with the same protruding bellies, not because of ascites, but because of excess adipose tissues.  These humans suffer not from hunger of food but rather from not understanding the disaster that is obesity, the other half of malnutrition that has reared its ugly head in the recent years.  Now, suddenly, both hunger and overabundance of food oppress us.

Like those stricken with hunger, children it seems are also susceptible to this rising epidemic.  But whereas the cause of world hunger is more political and economic in nature, obesity is more of a personal issue.

A typical case was that of a mother, who I saw in my clinic, with hypercholesterolemia and hypertension.  I advised her that even with medications, she has to modify her eating habits, so as to keep off the excess weight and keep her blood cholesterol and blood pressure at normal levels.

And her horrified response was: “But how do you expect me to do that?  Do I have to cook separate meals for myself.  The family simply can’t afford it!”

After further discussion, I found out that what her family “couldn’t afford” wasn’t monetary in nature.  It was the idea of switching the entire family to a different, “abnormal” diet that repelled her.

“My kids, all they want to eat are fried foods: fried chicken, fried fish, french fries, burgers, and chips.  I don’t know what to do.  So that’s why I also eat what they eat.  And thus, the high cholesterol,”  she explained.

is it due to environment or genes?

    June 27, 2007

“The way we think may be influenced by the quality of “fuel” we feed to our system”

Many people believe that intelligence is hereditary in nature. Others would argue that intelligence is nurtured over the years. What is this so called, “intelligence”? Intelligence is a property of mind that encompasses many related activities, such as the capacities to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend ideas and language, and learn.
When a child is intelligent, others would probably say that the child has received good genes from their parents. There seems to be a correlation between IQ and genes. This holds true even with dogs. Dogs like Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, etc. have higher intelligence as compared to unknown cross-breed dogs which are commonly found in the streets. In the BBC featured article on Genius of genes, there is a part of the human genome which involved in developing the person’s intelligence. This means that researchers believe the genetic influences affect person’s intelligence quotient. Infact, a team of scientists led by School of Medicine psychiatric geneticists confirmed a link between a gene CHRM2 and performance IQ, which involves a person’s ability to organize things.
On the other hand, many people argue that intelligence can be nurtured.

    Message from DreamHost support.

    June 27, 2007

This explains what happened to PinoyBlogoSphere.com at around 1:00am to 2:00am this morning. tsk tsk tsk. We still don’t know yet why these IP’s are making these numerous connections. Maybe they like PBS so much huh *lol*. Maybe they are just some of our loyal regular readers :D

    [Date: Jun 27, 2007 2:31 AM]

    Hello,

We had to firewall the following IPs for making excessive connections to
your site pinoyblogosphere.com, this caused your site to slow down and
    the apache to crash.

The IPs were (# on the left is the connections being made)

       314 210.23.123.90

       351 222.127.223.71

       692 202.57.83.154

       876 58.69.13.188

We have blocked it from connecting the your server so that it will not
bring your site down again. If this is not an IP that you want blocked
please let us know what it is being used for and we will see what we can
    work out.

    Thanks!

If you think these IP’s belong to your ISP, there’s a probability that these IP’s might be assigned to you whenever you dynamically get IP from them as you go online and would make PBS be inaccesible to you as these are currently being blocked by our host’s firewall. We’ll just let those IP’s be blocked for the time being and let’s just observe what’s gonna happen next :D In case that you’ll get affected by this, kindly let us know. Sorry for the inconvenience.

NCAA ManCom to Perpetual: Sorry, Thoyib is not eligible

    June 27, 2007

THE National Collegiate Athletic Association Management Committee (Man Com) has declared officially that Indonesian player Isman Thoyib of University of Perpetual Help Dalta System is not eligible to play in the 83rd NCAA men’s basketball.

Based on the documents obtained by the Man Com, the 6-foot-9 Thoyib had played for the Indonesian Basketball League (IBL) in 2006, a commercial league like the Philippine Basketball League (PBL).

The Man Com said the NCAA has a rule that stated: “Any athlete who played in any commercial league prior to his first season is not eligible to play in the NCAA.” The Basketball Association of Indonesia (BASI) also confirmed to the Man Com that Isman played in the IBL.

Isman has been included in the line-up of the Altas along with another Indonesian Ryan Frebyan. Both Frebyan and Korean Sang Myeon Lee, on the other hand are qualified to play in the league.

Three foreign players so far have been playing in the NCAA, including six-foot-eight Nigerian sophomore Samuel Ekwe.

Perpetual coach Arturo “Bai” Cristobal said they might appeal the case, considering that Indonesia has no other league but the IBL. And the IBL took the place of Indonesia’s collegiate basketball.

“There is no malice on our part,” said Cristobal whose charges lost to San Sebastian College, 59-56, in Saturday’s opening day third game.
