The Ching Palace

This plush Chinese restaurant was still in its first year in December 2004 when it got hit by a crisis when a society columnist of Cebu’s top newspaper Sun.Star Cebu wrote a ruthless tirade regarding the quality of its food.

Pond’s Age Miracle commercial

This is a follow up to my last Pond’s Age Miracle post. That post has become number one in Google in the search for Pond’s Age Miracle. It seems there are a lot of women enticed to buy this product because as the commercials say – it only takes 7 days for a miracle to happen (duhh!). I have discovered several other more commercials throughout the world, in different languages that do not do a good job of portraying beauty. Although the ads are varying, they all have one message in common – use the product and you will become a beauty, goddess, sex object, success. I really hate these ads.

Choosing the best school for your child

The school year has officially opened this week for me and my eldest son. He is on his second year of school and is currently in the nursery level.

I remember last year when I spent the whole first week of school with him, staying inside the classroom and watching him as he interacted with the other kids, chatting with the other mothers there. I felt so emotional that time because I realized how my son has grown.

I also recall how frantic I was summer of last year trying to determine what school to place my kid into. I cruised around the neighborhood, visiting the nearby pre-schools. I asked my cousins, friends, acquaintances. I searched the DepEd site too as I wanted to ensure that the school I chose was accredited and not some hocus-pocus institution. In the end, it was through the recommendation of my yaya that I found what I felt was the best school for my child.

the name that inspires!

We were interviewing candidates to become accredited fire watchmen. The next applicant was this male guy who entered our conference room immediately after the next guy went out. Our colleague said, “your name, please…” while I was ready to listen his name on the list of applicants , he answered in a confident voice, “I am Jennifer Cosep.” He surprised me with his name.

I could not afford to lose this question, “why do you think your parents chose your name, Jennifer when in fact there is no doubt that you are male?”. That was the same question he asked from his father when he found him in a very far place 20 years ago. His father left him when he was few months old. His parents are both illiterate. His name, Jennifer was just plucked from the air. The same name that bothers him when he was still schooling. He remembered how he was embarrassed when his name was included in the girls listing when he was still in grade school. Until now, his social security system ID is still temporary because the government employee doubts his name. He has encountered a lot of painful experiences with his present name. There is still a pending case that he needs to follow up regarding his birth certificate, other records and so on and so forth which is related to his name. He could not afford to change the name because of the tremendous bureaucratic requirements in the government coupled with his meager income who could not afford to pay some processing fees.

When he was about to exit from the interview, I and my colleague have the same assessment that he should pass the accreditation because he has a very good score in the examination and he was very alert during the interview. It is not because of the name, “Jennifer” but he shows his knowledge and competence during the interview.

When we advised him to submit his photo for his accreditation the next day, he immediately opened his pocket and showed his photo if it is acceptable. We noticed that there is a name printed at the back of his photo, “Jennifer – MALE”.

When he was about to close the door, he told us, “at last, my name inspires me!”

Remember the Betrayal

It is half a century ago when America deceived the Filipinos.

Shortly after Japan bombed Pearl Harbour, they attacked the Philippines (mainly because she was a possession of USA at that time). General Mc Arthur ( described by William Manchester as one of the most gifted man-at-arms the US has produced) was in charge of protecting the Philippines against the Japanese.

Three weeks after the world war II, president Benjamin Franklin told the Filipinos that help was coming.

General Mc Arthur and his men fought gallantly against the Japanese not knowing that help was never coming.

The Valley Girl Is Swamped

Ugh! I hate exams and I hate the finals! I am reading/studying this effing “Directing” book and it is so goddamn boring that it induces both narcolepsy and sudden bouts of migraine. I guess it is too much for my valley girl-esque brain of mine. I was actually thinking of going down to the lake and take a dip while admiring the boys around with their well-hung equipment. Hmmm now I miss Odd alot.

Okay while I am coaxing myself to continue reading this tripe here are some shit I have been doing or contemplating lately.

Kalayaan2007 @ PBS

Mgandang umaga! :) Bukas na ang 2007 Phil. Independence Day. Nagkausap kami ni g0ma kagabi at nagkatanungan kung ano bang gimik sa PBS ngayon nalalapit na araw ng kalayaan? hmmm. Good Question!

Ind. day? Naks naman parang Halalan2007 coverage eh noh. :D Asa… *LOL. What if magpa-contest tayo sa PBS Group Blog? Siguro kami ni B eh pwede mag-pa-host sa Dreamhost account namin for a year :D Pwede na bang prize yun? Hosting lang ha hindi pa kasama yung domain hehe.

Pinoy-made Video Games

What better way to celebrate Philippine Indepence Day (June 12) than to discuss the legacy of Filipinos when it comes video game design, right?

Well, in the forefront of the news are Anino Games (formerly Anino Entertainment) – best known for the game Anito (which I wrote about ages back when I was working for Fast Forward magazine) and Flipside – these talented guys (led by my good friend Gabby Dizon) dabbles in servicing international clients for casual games.
