Michael Shermer Goes Firewalking
June 27, 2007
Michael Shermer, author of the hardcover book, How We Believe: The Search for God in an age of Science, tries his hand (or rather, his feet) at walking barefoot on 1,200-degree burning coals and doesn’t get burned. Watch closely as he gives the scientific explanation for this phenomenon.

A tragedy. For young adults.
I thought the movie was something that would you goose bumps like the “Sixth Sense” but to my dismay, it did not.
The story was about a guy who got beaten up by a girl who thought that he was the one who told the cops about the stealing she and her boyfriend did. She beat the guy so hard that she and her gang left him for dead, well almost. The guy astrally projected himself and learned about his mother’s secret hurts and the girl’s harsh life at home.
The guy tried hard to make the girl notice him despite his invisibility. Soon, the girl learned that her boyfriend was the one who betrayed her and was consumed by guilt. Later in the end, the girl found the body (it was moved into another place), got shot by her boyfriend, went to the hospital to visit the guy, held his hand, then died from the wound shot. The guy lived. The end.
The guy and girl could have fallen in love in the end but fate had it to end that way. Sayang. It could have been a love story instead.

Easy to make barbecued chicken
June 26, 2007
I realized that I have not published a lot of articles that are related to home cooking. And if you must know, I not only love to eat - I love to cook as well. Being the eldest girl in the family branded me with the expectation that I must be the one to learn how to cook… among other things. So there I went watching my father do his thing at the wok. He taught me everything I know about cooking. In fact, whenever I was not sure about how a certain dish was cooked, the first person I would call would be my father. And that includes the time that I was in the US.
Well enough about me and let’s go on to the food.

Pinoy Awareness on Blogging

“Can anybody tell me what this word means?â€
“Sir! Can I go to the bathroom?â€Â  If you would ask around on the offline world (that’s the real world, still remember that place?), you may find out that a lot of Pinoys still have no idea what blogging is in spite of its popularity on the internet.

You may only learn about this thing on a number of print media (Manila Bulletin’s Blog-o-rama), from friends, or from people who blogs. Only when you step into the world of blogging itself, you’ll find out that the world ‘blog’ is one of the most widely known terms on the internet.

Raft For A Cause
June 26, 2007
I’ve been involved in volunteer work for a couple of groups. One of this is Cartwheel Foundation whose mission is to provide education to indigenous children and communities with no access to basic services. Coleen Ramirez emailed me a while ago regarding Cartwheel Foundation’s Raft for a Cause. So, in case you’re thinking of a good activity, this is it!

I’m so exhausted with all the things happening to me. My job, my passion, my responsibilities and my life.R.I.P. Rabid Wolverine
June 26, 2007

It’s a depressing way to start my morning. Chris Benoit, “The Rabid Wolverine” with “Toothless Aggression”, has gone on to that great wrestling ring in the sky with his wife and son. I’ve never been this sad about a wrestler’s death since Eddie Guerrero passed away.

I like this ‘fake’ Harry Potter series ender
June 26, 2007
Crossposted from my blog.
IF YOU haven’t noticed yet, there’s now a MyBlogLog widget at the bottom of my sidebar. I just followed Irvin’s lead here — and that included joining the PinoyBlogosphere community, on Bratyfly’s invite — and I’m enjoying the experience.
One of the stuff that comes with a MyBlogLog account is a header called “Hot in My Communities.” A fan of the Harry Potter series that is about to finally be unraveled on July 21, the top entry grabbed my attention yesterday as I was winding down work at the office. It is a link to an alleged fake version of J.K Rowling’s 7th and final installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
To cut the crap, I downloaded it and immediately went to the ending, and read my way backwards, scanning about 100 pages or so.
For a fake Harry Potter, the stuff I read appealed to the sucker-for-happy-endings guy in me. I dunno how J.K Rowling’s official version would look like — I will still buy my eldest Ezekiel’s copy when the price becomes affordable — but this fake version is, to me, a good enough alternative Harry Potter universe. Especially if the original becomes dark as advertised.
As a final word, let me say this: whoever wrote this 659-page fake deserves some accolade. On first brush, it is a believable 659-page yarn; and writing all 659 pages organized into 34 chapters is no mean feat.
St. John’s fire
June 26, 2007

It’s a bit unusual for a Protestant country to celebrate feast days, but Sankt Hans Aften (St. John’s Eve) in Denmark is probably more of a pagan rite commemorating summer solstice than a Christian one. Instead of splashing water, a bonfire is lit and the midsummer song is sung.
As the intermittent rain gave way to sunny skies, families flocked to parks to be part of the experience. Merry little bands touring Carlsberg Brewery and hitchhiking from Lejre Research Center: classic exchange student stories.
Dying Healthcare in the Philippines: Another Doctor’s Perspective
June 25, 2007
Although I don’t think I’m a blogger well-established enough to feature the writings of another blogger, still I’d like to take this opportunity to share with your another doctor’s perspective on the status of the health care system in the Philippines. This just goes to say that not few doctors (and not only me) see the terrible dilemma our country is facing regarding our health care system and that doctors are raising their voices to be able to let the whole country know that many changes should be done soon, if not, now.
Here’s Dr. Carl Dwight Demetria’s take on the issue (as posted in another forum):
* * * * *
Health care in the Philippines is dying.
And for me, it is a slow, painful death. Like a hemorrhaging patient with advanced TB, who neglected to take the needed but annoyingly long anti-Koch’s medications.
We could run the merry-go-round of declaring who is the more righteous: the pragmatist who believes that “the best provider is the one who leaves”, or the apologist/optimist who generalizes medical students as rich, and can tolerate a few more years of drought before they hit the big time in local medical practice.
But the prospects for our patient named Philippine health care is necessarily colored by our personal experiences as doctors. Even as we slowly espouse evidence-based medicine in our human patients, in social problems such as this one we inevitably fall on our own emotion-colored glasses to see the picture.
So to add to this discussion I return to what I have experienced in my short stint as a doctor.
Even while studying in the State University, there has always been a distinction between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’. This delineation can be noticed once somebody initiates a discussion about future plans. The ‘haves’, either by virtue of a sizeable war chest, an inheritable clinic practice, or extensive networking, are almost always cocksure about their plans for the future: residency in PGH, or taking the USMLE.
The ‘have-nots’, who have struggled silently to get through medical school, are not as sure as to their future plans. The lack of a medical Economics class does not help matters.
As they approach the clinics, they all see first hand the innards of a government hospital, and its one oft-repeated saving grace: the richness of clinical material called patients. Otherwise, the bureaucracy cripples everything from supplies to having enough nurses to the imposed, but subtle, monstrosity that is termed ‘hierarchy’. Only a few would dare express delight at this set-up, declaring their fealty to the hospital and the corresponding willingness to sacrifice ‘few’ years to train there. Most would be silently waiting for the day that they could break free from the hospital’s grip.
Feast of San Juan
June 25, 2007
I’ve been a resident of San Juan for two years now at least but it’s my first time to witness how it’s being celebrated. I shot some images of the festivities though am still a bit dizzy from shooting at the Fete dela Musique the previous night (too bad I don’t have a pass). Just made it a point to bring a plastic bag in case I got drenched.

Today is my first Birthday!
June 25, 2007
Yes, today is not an ordinary day. Because I have orbited the sun! Oh, I have been such a very good pug! But not too good– and certainly not all the time! Mommy’s been really busy trying to get some of her projects done and hasn’t had much time to play with me. I’m glad that today, my birthday, she dropped all her works, gave me a ‘lil party and type these words out for me… you know keyboards are not made for puggie paws.
Enjoy my pugcited birthday party pictures.
Inside BAHAY TSINOY in Intramuros
June 25, 2007

any Filipinos may not realize — as evidenced by rare coins, tradewares, and other unearthed artifacts — that there was extensive contacts between the Chinese and Filipinos long before the Spaniards discovered the archipelago and named it the Philippines.
Early records also indicate the active trading between the Chinese and Filipinos from the north to the south of the islands by the late 10th century; bartering mainly facilitated their transactions. The Filipinos also visited China as recounted in the story of the Sultan of Sulu Paduka Batara. The Sultan went to Beijing to pay tribute to the Imperial Court of Emperor Yung Lo in 1417, but died on his way back home.

Blogs Touch Lives
June 25, 2007
Of late, I was pondering on the notion that though a blog is not popular base on the standards of alexa, technorati and ratify, and no matter how loud or how soft the voice of a blog in the blogosphere, the rumblings, musings, rants or whatever we want to call it, blogs do touch lives–Bloggers scratch the back of other bloggers, and vice-versa. There may be some who exchange links just for the sake of increasing the popularity and profitability of their blogs (not necessarily bad), but there are also those who are more conservative in managing their blogroll. But irregardless of the nature of link exchanges, blogs caused on-line connection become real friendship that extends to the real world.

Raredog Blogging Tips

I still consider myself new or fresh in this blogging thing. I started only last year with completely zero knowledge at all except to write. I envy those young bloggers nowadays because it was in their generation that it had boomed! Imagine even mobile phones now has blogging features!Â
And since last year I’ve gained little by little information on how my blog will become popular and eventually bring traffic to my site. Here are some of them.
