Moving on
July 31, 2007
This morning, I was so enticed by one blogger who has moved his blogs to WordPress that I tried it myself and had the process figured out. It was just awesome to see how the entire blog being transferred from one site to another. Really neat! We owe it to technology and to the internet savvy guys who work hard (and get highly paid!) for this marvel in communication.
I can blame it to my indolence in learning another blogging process, but perhaps, WordPress is just too “techie” for me, unlike Blogger.com, where blogging becomes uncomplicated and trouble-free. It is like voting for Nokia or Sony Ericsson. And I choose Nokia because Sony Ericsson, just like WordPress, is not user-friendly (and I mean it!). WordPress users reading this must be brewing with anger by now. Don’t push your button yet. This is not going to be a technical debate on which blogging technology is better.

Charles’ Reviews: Harry Potter 5
July 31, 2007
One of the most awaited movie this year has finally been released in the Philippines.
The 5th installment of Harry Potter’s Saga, comes to a near climax when Harry and his friends, Ron and Hermoine, finally meet their arch enemy, Lord Voldemort.
The movie is based from J.K. Rowling’s best seller novel, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I would say, this is one of the best Harry Potter movie — visually effective, and the sounds are great.
But, as with the other movie versions of the first four books, there are many parts that was edited, replaced or minimize. Here are some of the points that was edited:
1. The twin Weasley’s escape from school
2. The different levels at the Department of Mysteries
3. The battle of Dumbledore and Voldemort at the Ministry of Magic
4. The scene of Dumbledore escaping from Crouch in the Headmaster’s office

Charles’ Reviews: The Simpsons Movie
July 31, 2007
Ok. I think, I have already build up the fact that I am a Cinemaniac, I can watch 5 movies straight in a day. But I haven’t stated the fact that I am a Simpsons fan too. So, that’s it.
I have really worked out my schedule for me to watch this movie. Since the trailer was shown, I have made up my mind that I will definitely see this movie - - and I have, with some of my good students.
Anyway, in a question of ethics, I don’t care. I have forgotten my stature as their teacher while watching this movie, since I have laughed out (very very) loud. Nagulat nga sila eh.. Hehehe.. But they haven’t seen the best (and worst) laugh from me.
Anyway, the much anticipated Simpsons Movie brought surprises and disappointments with some viewers. After 400 episodes, you think that there won’t be enough storyline that can cover a full-length movie. In the course of this 125-minute movie, you would definitely feel the difference between an ordinary episode from this one.
From the introduction - the lost of the usual couch scene, and the psychology of the chalkboard joke, and the Green Day concert - to the unfolding of the plot, and the big D’ohs of Homer, and Bart’s frontal nudity, the momentum isn’t sustained. There are some points where you would really laugh out loud, and some points to get (small) yawns.
The plot, although, is time. Its about the environment. The topic that would really excite Lisa Simpson, and would definitely bore Homer and Bart. Some elements in this movie, you can see it in the regular Simpson episode.
Overall, the movie is good. This one, you can say, is an ordinary Simpson episode, stretched enough to make a 125-minute event. That it’s a movie that didn’t have to be made and that movies of TV shows rarely turn out great anyway. Lastly, since Homer (speaking to the audience) laid it all down nicely for everyone at the opening scene, no one has the right to bitch about anything.
Ratatouille: Wisdom on the Menu
July 31, 2007
Ratatouille is Disney’s latest animated flick. Don’t dismiss it as just another example of perfect animation by Pixar. It dishes out wisdom with the speed of a fast food restaurant but with all the trimmings associated with fine dining. And in buffet style too. Take as much wisdom as you please.
What’s on the menu?
Anyone can cook. Gusteau’s motto is the overall theme of the movie. He encourages Remy and other chefs in training or by profession to take the bold leap and chase after that dream. His dictum is applicable to anything that we set out to accomplish. We just have to keep working at it.

Judy Ann Santos, Nakialam sa Away ng Manyak
July 31, 2007

Becky Aguila, Hindi raw Mukhang Pera
July 31, 2007

ETSOS!
(Ara, be thankful na 9 takes lang. Eh sa ibang shoot nga, 48 takes ang inaabot para sa kissing scene. Ay naku! Isang malaking GOOD LUCK, Mare!)

Going back to my favorite Coffee Shop
July 30, 2007

I have always loved coffee as you may all know by now. Both my husband and I drink coffee to start out our day and we frequent coffee shops around the city when hanging out.
It has been a while since I went back to Libis but when I did, my coffee shop stop was Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.
I had anticipated waiting for hours for my husband to get off work so decided to just take my lunch there. I then started my pros and cons on choosing pasta vs. a sandwich. I was about 2 persons away from the counter so I took the chance to read everything on their menu.
My spanking new site. Nifty, ain’t it?
July 30, 2007
I’ve been blogging for more than two years now having made about 192 entries covering just about everything from my mundane everyday experiences, rants, travel, practical stuff, and haunting thoughts, to taxation, male glamour, technology, gadgets, and made-up stories. My blogging served its purpose: an outlet for expression and my way of sharing ideas, something that positively drives other blog writers who are also helplessly trapped in this enriching experience. Trapped or maybe just wading for a feel of the waves blown their way by the winds and the tides.
Bob Ong’s Macarthur
July 30, 2007
His 6th book, Macarthur, is not a collection of stories, jokes or essays from the internet like the way his previous books are patterned. Neither is it about Bob Ong’s supposed life experiences. This time, the book ventures more into the sad realities of being poor and underprivileged in the country via Voltron, Jim, Noel and Cyrus’ tupsy-turvy lives. Yes people, Bob Ong has sunk his teeth into writing non-fiction.
Macarthur, as in General Douglas McArthur of WWII, is actually about human feces, well at least for me in it’s lightest sense. But if you dig deeper into the story, it’s not just about Voltron’s feces or the regurgitated food in his throat: the book is about breaking the bad habits that we do over and over again. For some, breaking the rules is fun but if you break the LAW, get in jail and hurt others in the process, that’s misdemeanor.
We’ve heard stories about dirty and indecent policemen who take care of certain snatchers, robbers and some other hooligans only to set them loose on the streets and loot innocent bystanders. These policemen would then act to chase or imprison these criminals but in truth, they get a share in their bounty. Of course, policemen are just small fry when compared to the big time thieves: public officials. But let me make it clear: stealing in any way is still bad, whether you steal from the streets or from the national treasury. Either way is evil and should not be tolerated.
But the ills of our society do not end with theft, drugs, unemployment and poverty. It includes our social, justice, political, economic and agricultural systems. When I look at these things, the solution I think of is rather inappropriately simple: initiating the change within ourselves first. Yeah, I know, cliche, cliche…but what else can we do? People Power has long been drained of it’s convincing capabilities, impeachment, The Office of the Ombudsman and the Blue Ribbon Committee are just practical jokes and the Genuine Opposition is a paradox! I mean, really, what other things can we think of to solve our rotting core systems? And remember, Philippines is the MOST CORRUPT in Asia this year. It may seem a small solution and an incomprehensible one at that, but it seems to make a lot more sense than to give our continued support to the crackpots up in Congress.
This is what I feel whenever I read a Bob Ong book; vigilant and overly conscious and concerned about the country. Although his last four books, including this one, are not as funny as his first two, I still love Bob Ong’s efforts to reach out and appeal to our patriotic senses. Even with his small and unassuming books, the man tries his best to help and encourage us to do better for the nation. And I second his motion.

Behind the Thriller in Cebu
July 30, 2007

By now, you have probably watched (again and again) the country’s latest YouTube phenomenon after Alyssa Alano’s mispronunciation of the song “Kiss Me.”
Over a million views just a week after its upload, the video featuring Cebuano prisoners dancing to “Thriller” has become a worldwide hit. It has not only been featured in the local news, but also in BBC, CNN, and other international news agencies.
But what is it anyway? Is it a form of punishment? A way to divert from gang wars? Or simply a prison version of a recess?
Al Jazeera English reports after the jump.

Wet, dry and panic season

Water rationing is pathetic and reflects the short-sightedness of government. Exhorting the public to conserve water may be reasonable but unnecessary. Majority of the poor are using water prudently. Why not appeal to golf clubs to stop wasting precious water resources?

Good news: Student loans may soon be granted
July 30, 2007
The Commission on Higher Education will be increasing its funding for student loans to P4 billion from P215 million, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reports. Due to this, student loans may soon be available from the government of as much as P30,000 per year to finance their education. This will serve as financial aid to less fortunate students and they can pay it later.
The funds could be availed of as early as the second semester of the current school year which begins in November. The student loan program’s bank is the Land Bank of the Philippines which has committed itself to providing some P1 billion in funding.
Further, the qualification standards will not be that strict so everyone can avail to it. The program will be available by the second semester this year and will be fully implemented by 2008.
The True Miracle
July 29, 2007
Have you observed people, mostly Catholics, would visit to a miraculous place? There are thousands of reasons on why they decide to visit a place which is known for miracles. Let me define first the word miracle. According to Standford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, a miracle is a supernaturally (divinely) caused event which is different from what would have occurred in the normal (”natural”) course of events. Philosophically, miracle is never a mere coincidence no matter how extraordinary or significant unless the ‘coincidence’ itself is caused by divine intervention. An example is if you miss a plane and the plane crashes, that is not a miracle unless….continue>>
