Reading Matters, Part II: The Lost Passion For Learning

“Isn’t that the purpose of school? To help you pass your exams?”
The conversation between the high school girl and her father came to mind, as I was watching Hermione in the Harry Potter 5 movie. She was saying that school weren’t concerned anymore about the students learning, but rather they’re simply preoccupied with the students memorizing prescribed school books (but not understanding it or applying the concepts) so as to pass examinations.
That stuck with me and it made me realize how similar the situation of the fantastic Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry is with what’s happening in our very own schools.
The greater emphasis on grades has been the prevailing belief back in my high school days and I wouldn’t be surprised if it is still the current trend. Ask any high school student why he is studying and most probably he’d tell you he’s doing it so “he could pass his exams”. Only few would admit to a goal of being truly educated. Many students would even go as far as giving “special favors” to faculty members or even to administrative officers just to add some points to their grades, especially those who’re after making it or maintaining status in the honors’ list. And, of course, some scrupulous people will take advantage of this certain situation to make few bucks themselves. Also, many of you have your own share of horror stories about classmates who’d do anything, even hurt or deceive their own classmates and friends, just to gain an advantage in a particular exam.
THE RIGHT TO BLOG
Modern technology opened the doors for photographers, artists and bloggers alike to publish and display their works in a wider perspective with far raging coverage in the world wide net. One can easily publish his work and enhance its presentation through the use of graphic software or designs readily available in the net and display the same in blogger’s sites such as Blogspot, Pinoyblogosphere and other sites. Knowledge in Adobe Photoshop coupled with creative writing skills can easily surpass a newspaper or television presentation with far ranging effect. In fact, it can stay in the net for unlimited period with its own domain, which can be viewed repeatedly all over the world. However, others are hesitant to publish their work because they treasure their creativity and ideas, which might only be copied by others. Or, it may pry upon other’s privacy and they are afraid of getting into trouble. Don’t be.
Ownership over your writings, photographs or artistic works are protected by the Intellectual Property Law. Insofar as the subject or person in your picture, however, is concerned: so long as they are public figure or has acquiesced to be taken picture of, you have every right to publish it in the exercise of your freedom of expression. The definition of ‘public figure’ covers a wide latitude of persons.

Upcoming Events on the Pinoy Blogosphere
The Taste Asia blogger meet-up event that was held last July 3 was indeed a very fun and memorable experience for me that kept me wanting for more. I then searched the blogosphere for upcoming events that will be held here in the Philippines and it took me quite a while just to get some scoop. It seems that there’s no easy way to look for these events but to look for them manually. Which is such a drag!
I have decided to put all the dates of upcoming events that will be held on the pinoy blogosphere on my blog, PinoyBlogero, for the convenience of everyone. I’ve even added a calendar with the list of upcoming events on my sidebar for easy browsing. Yes. I’ll do it for my fellow Pinoy Bloggers. Ganyan ko kamahal ang Pinoy blogosphere.
So if you are looking for events, contests, meet-ups that you can sink your teeth into, just drop by at Pinoy Blogero. Oh yeah, you could also contact me if you have any events that can be added to the list.
Happy Blogging!
