SONA Sideshow

July 28, 2007

Before anything else, I am greeting my friend Dada. He is turning twenty today. You can find him at Cogency of Absurdity.

For some time now the State of the Nation Address (SONA) has occupied a prominent place in the attention of the blogosphere netizens. So far, most of the posts I’ve read fall into two categories: either they think the SONA is a farce or it’s lacking in some way or another.

Manuel Quezon III, one of my favorite columnists, cites several of such commentaries in his blog.

Post-SONA hangover 2007 edition shares his insightful take on the recent SONA while the Pork Barrel Republic: SONA coverage provides a witty and off-beat transcript of last Monday’s proceedings inside the Batasan.

His coverage proved very useful as a chronological account of the events in the House. I had very important classes and was thus cut off from monitoring developments the whole day.

The allure of a single mom

July 28, 2007

There’s something about single moms. Some say its an aura that surrounds them. Some say its the way they carry themselves. Some even say there’s a certain smell of a single mom. Many profess to spot one from a mile away.

A lot of people think that there is something so pitiful about having to bear a child out of wedlock. Imagine having to carry a bulge for nine months without the security of a wedding ring and another man’s surname. As if security really goes with a gold band and some dude’s family tree.

Tools for Monitoring Your Blog’s Growth

Tools for monitoring your blog's growth

One thing that I learned from all the blogs that I have created in the past is that there is no greater joy for a blogger than seeing his blog grow with every passing day. Rising through ranks, gaining readership, receiving backlinks, getting more spam comments, all of these can make any blogger sing to the tune of “Sinabawang Gulay” without getting embarassed.

A growing blog is equal to a happy blogger.

I remember the time when my blog’s visits shot up for a week because of my article “Paano kung naimbento ang blogging noong 1989?” For seven straight days, I was constantly checking out my blog stats, grinning at every figure added to my site’s counter. I even dreamt about it every night! Swear!

It’s a good thing that there are a lot of tools for a blogger’s disposal in order for them to monitor a blog’s growth. I have tried out some of them and have been on top of Pinoy Blogero.com’s everyday progress.

The Wit and Class of a Filipino

July 28, 2007

A Filipino walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loan officer. He tells the loan officer that he is going to the Philippines on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000.
The bank officer tells him that the bank will need some form of security for the loan, so the Filipino hands over the keys of a new Ferrari.
The car is parked on the street in front of the bank. The Filipino produces the title and everything checks out.

The loan officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan.
The bank’s president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the Pinoy for using a $250,000 Ferrari as collateral against a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drives the Ferrari into the bank’s underground garage and parks it there.

Two weeks later, the Pinoy returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan officer says, “Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out andfound that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?”

The Pinoy replies: “Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?”

The popcorn craze

July 28, 2007

I have always loved popcorn. When watching movies, I make sure I have a big bucket of salted popcorn with me before entering the cinema. That kind of popcorn has been so popular that microwavables were made. I came across them when I was in the US. I loved them so much, I had to bring home a big box of microwave popcorn to last me a year. Its a good thing that they have those now in our local supermarkets.

A while back, there was such a craze over Holy Kettle Corn. They were advertised as hand popped fresh everyday in addition to supposedly being no butter, no cholesterol, no preservatives, no artificial flavors, and non-fattening. Whew! Wouldn’t you just love to wolf down your favorite snack if it promised all that? Not really thinking about how non-fattening it is, these guys really taste great. It gives you an alternative to your usual salty or even cheesy popcorn. It is popcorn that is salty at first bite but offers a sweet caramel taste in your mouth. The kernels come glazed with caramel sugar. Imagine a combination of your caramel popcorn and your moviehouse popcorn. Lovely right?

TOGETHER let us remember Dick and Rick

July 28, 2007

Dick and Rick Hoyt are a father-and-son team from Massachusetts, USA. TOGETHER, they competed just about continuously in marathon races. And if they’re not in a marathon they are in a triathlon — that disheartening, almost superhuman, combination of 26.2 miles of running, 112 miles of bicycling, and 2.4 miles of swimming.

TOGETHER they have climbed mountains, and once trekked 3,770 miles across America.

It’s a remarkable record of exertion considering that Rick can’t walk nor talk.
For the past several years Dick, who is 65, has pushed and pulled his son across the country and over hundreds of finish lines. When Dick runs, Rick is in a wheelchair that Dick is pushing. When Dick cycles, Rick is in the seat-pod from his wheelchair, attached to the front of the bike. When Dick swims, Rick is in a small but heavy, firmly stabilized boat being pulled by Dick. TOGETHER, Dick is the body and Rick is the heart.

July 27, 2007

When you are reading, do you sometimes scratch your head while you try to understand what you are reading? It’s hard to comprehend something when you can’t even understand the words they are using. You tried so hard to look for an answer and when you thought that you have found it, you still fail because you don’t understand the answer. Well, here are some tips I wish those people would do, how to write for everyone?

How can one man have so much power over you?

July 27, 2007

I watched the DVD of Music and Lyrics a few days ago. I’m a hundred years late in watching this film but I don’t mind. I still loved it anyway.

I liked it for the fact that I was reminded of how men are total jerks. Recall the scenes where Drew talked about her relationship with famous novelist, Sloan. She struggled with the fact that she invested her love on a guy who would eventually write a book about it in not so good words - thus earning his income on her sad, pitiful story. Kiss and tell. And those who tell most often than not choose the way they tell - where they turn out to be the victims. Men? Victims. Come on.

A Pinoy!

July 27, 2007

Pinoy is what Filipinos call each other, a
term of endearment. You’re Pinoy from Pilipino just like you’re tisoy
from mestizo or chinoy from chino.

It’s a nickname just as Minoy is from Maximo, Ninoy from Benigno,
Tinay from Florentina and Kikay from Francisca. But now they’re Maxi
and Ben and Tintin and Cheska.

You’ve been called indio, goo-goo, Negro, flip, noypits. Or Filipino,
a biscuit th at is brown outside and white inside, or a word stricken
from the dictionary which means domestic. Ay, lintik!

You’re Juan de la Cruz or Mang Pandoy. You’re common tao, masa, urban
poor but also Cecile Licad and Don Jaime, Jose Rizal and Tony Meloto,
Shawie and Pacquiao and Nick Joaquin, galing galing.

Born June 12, 1896, the Republic of the RP is a Gemini, good at
connecting, good at loving-loving, good at texting and interpersonal
skills.

Filipinos like to yakap, akbay, hawak, kalong, kalabit. We sleep side
by side, siping-siping, we go out kabit kabit.

Nung isang linggo sa opisina:

Lisa:  Are you on holidays next week, Jon?…No you’re not leaving us! (pabiro)

Jon:  Actually, I didn’t take any holidays last year, this is the first time I’m gonna be off.

Lisa:  Oh, my heart is bleeding for you mate…why didn’t you?  Or take a longer one this time?

Jon:  I don’t feel like resting too long, back in the Philippines you rarely get holidays.  Worst is if you insist on having one, you might not have a job when you come back!

Reviving the Nation

The Vision

Where do we go from here? Where must the Philippines be ten, fifteen years from now?
We must not be afraid to dream of a country which is free of poverty by the year 2020.
We have to make a decision to solve this problem in our generation.
This translates to two million Filipino getting out of the poverty trap every year.
Can this be done? Yes, this can be done. Is there hope? Yes there is. How do we do this?

here’s how.

LPG Fuel: A Health Risk?

July 27, 2007

“Why is the government allowing LPG fuel when it is a health risk? Many drivers claim that their health deteriorated with LPG.” I received this message from my friend who works for an NGO. As a commuter who values the role of public transport drivers, I became deeply concerned. So I will attempt to answer her question.

According to news reports

the Department of Health (DOH) is currently investigating a surge of heath risks among drivers of public utility vehicles fueled by Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said, “We have received reports of drivers of LPG-driven public vehicles suffering from difficulty in breathing and skin allergy.” He said that if LPG is indeed proven to pose health risks, the DOH will “make a recommendation to immediately stop the use of such technology.”

Ain’t that for cooking? Why use LPG for fuel anyway? Click here to read the rest of the entry

We are Responsible For The Shortage of Doctors, Not the Rich Nations

July 26, 2007

In an article from International Herald Tribune published last July 20, the rich nations were blamed for the shortage of doctors, not only in the Philippines, but in all poor countries. As much as 18,000 Filipino doctors leave the country, mostly going to the U.S. to undergo training and eventually, to stay there for good.  Even Africa, where millions are afflicted with AIDS and very much in need of medical attention, is being drained of its doctors.  It appears that monetary compensation is one obvious factor why a healthcare professional leaves his home country.  Another less obvious one is career satisfaction, which some overzealous people think should be second priority to the god, Patriotism.  In the end, it is the recruitment of foreign-educated doctors by rich nations that is blamed for this “brain-drain”.

I don’t believe it is the rich nations’ fault that a lot of doctors flock to their countries for training and medical practice.  That is like blaming the bakery with the better-tasting bread for another bakery’s loss of loyal customers.  Or blaming a more reputable, consistent university for having more incoming freshmen than a college who’s failed to improve itself.  The rich nations are short of healthcare professionals and are willing to compensate well those who’d come to its shores to work, which is admirable really because it shows how much they care about their nation’s health and well-being that they’d spend for its survival and maintenance.

And now, contrast this with what is happening in our country.

Tips on protecting your images/ photos

July 26, 2007

Even with the existence of Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines (RA8293), many photographers still are victims of copyright infringement. And the poor photographer can’t even sue the infringers (because of the money involved in pursuing the case) against corporations and publishing houses – which are more moneyed than the photographers themselves. The photographer can’t help but gnash their teeth in disbelief.

Meanwhile, here are some tips to deter infringers from using your images:

Read the fine print
This is usually taken for granted. Too often we find ourselves caught in some nasty surprise by not reading the terms and conditions. So, before uploading any images, read the fine print of that particular site offering a free on-line gallery service. So, don’t rush into clicking that ‘accept’ button.

Avoid ‘Manipulative’ Photo Contests
If you can, avoid photo competitions which are ‘manipulative’ (Yes, we have many of these here in the Philippines, contrary to the contests being organized abroad). I say manipulative because often, the rules/contest mechanics are obviously pro-organizers. Sometimes, I can’t help but wonder if those photo contests was organized to just collect photos from photographers. Ironically, this has been going on for quite sometime. So, as much as possible, select the competition you enter where, even if you win, you still retain the ownership over the copyright of the image. Read the contest mechanics carefully.

Evolution of the Philippine Internet: From MIRC to Blogging

July 26, 2007

From MIRC to Blogging

The internet, dubbed as the Information Superhighway because of the mountains of information that one can tug from it. It was originally made to share information from all parts of the globe but it soon evolved and also became known as the Entertainment Broadway.

Throughout the years, the internet has been all kinds of changes. It has never ceased to change and evolve into something much better than the previous one. The phrase “the only thing constant is change”, sums it all up pretty nicely.

How long has it been since it has first landed here in the Philippines? What changes has it undergone and what effects did it have on the minds of our countrymen? Pinoy Blogero looks back and recounts the evolution of the internet here in the Philippines.

The Stone Age
I remember the first time when the internet was just starting to attract mass appeal here in the Philippines. I was one of those first few who bravely yet cautiously took a step forward to get a feel of the new world that is promised by the internet.
