Magalingdinkami - Disciples of Jo Avila Yahoogroup Launched!

July 26, 2007

Jo Avila’s former students and VAs got together during Jo Avila’s Annual VA & Student party held last Saturday, July 21, 2007 at his studio and everyone had a great time!

The group had discussions in putting up an online venue where all of Jo Avila’s former students and VA’s can meet each other and share some ideas. With Jo Avila’s approval, Raymond Veran created a Yahoo! Group aptly name Magalingdinkami with a tagline Disciples of Jo Avila; Jo uses pinakamagalingako as his nick/username in forums and emails thus the name Magalingdinkami.

Caught in a red tape

July 26, 2007

red-tape.bmp

Bureaucracy and red tape is not the monopoly of the government. Now that government agencies are always under the watchful eye of the discerning public, they are always trying to improve their services to become more efficient and effective in their delivery of services. Perhaps, they owe the public the improvement of services.

I feel sorry for private institutions, which are not bound by civil obligations. The least they could do is uphold their moral obligations, especially when their intention is to work with the poor. What if the information I requested from them is a matter of national security or of life and death? We would all be ashes by now.

That’s My Story

July 26, 2007

I would like to share with you an informative and insightful article which I received from my email titled, “That’s My Story” which was written by Byron Pulsifer.

“Who doesn’t have a personal story? No one. No matter where you live, what your background, who you talk to, his or her education, gender, or age, everyone one of us has a story to tell. Some of these stories seem to have no end; some seem to be the same day after day, while other’s stories leap from good to better. Is there a common thread, a common theme in all of these stories? Yes there is. You may not believe it at first, but it is a fact. The common theme in each of these stories cause some of us to despair, some of us to want to shun that person, some of us to want to leap to their rescue, and some of us to count our blessings.

Q and A’s

July 26, 2007

I really don’t fell like writing a decent entry after a rough week that I am having now. My vacation was ruined and Odd had to travel back to Bergen to see me instead. I will explain everything on my next post so please bear with me and hopefully things are back to normal. In addition, I would like to thank Anna, Renny and Empress Maruja for their kind words and support.

What They think 100 years Ago?

July 26, 2007

Paleo-future has an interesting yet true post about prediction. This is about the article of John Elfreth Watkins, Jr. , author of many detective and mystery novels who wrote a piece for the December issue of Ladies Home Journal speculating about what the world will be in the next hundred years.

This is really a strange article which is about the compiled speculations of conservative minds of America and wise men of institutions of science and learning published January 1, 1901 Milwaukee Herold und Seebote newspaper issue.

The real state of Philippine education

July 26, 2007

Crossposted from my weblog.

ONE of the more popular computing terms while I was in college 20 years ago was GIGO, shorthand for “Garbage In, Garbage Out.”

Not sure if it is still being used, I googled and found out that this aphorism “has fallen out of use as (computer) programs have become more sophisticated and now usually have checks built in to reject improper input.”

This once-popular term came to mind when I reflected some more on President Arroyo’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) last Monday, especially the parts that concerned education. In my previous post, I tackled how a policy reversal on teacher hiring instituted by Education Secretary Jesli Lapus negates the president’s claim that her administration has been investing on better teachers.

This demonstrates that policies are equally powerful inputs into the learning process, very much like Ms. Arroyo’s penchant for the billions of pesos invested on “social safety nets” that include public education. But unlike modern computer programs, there are no such checks in place that would automatically reject garbage policies like what Lapus has instituted.

Pre-birthday Blues

July 26, 2007

I know, I know. I’ve been MIA the past few weeks. I mean, honestly, can you even call my recent posts “blog entries”? I don’t think so. Still, can’t help it. It’s me being the fickle-minded and depressed person that I always am. My friend thinks differently though. It’s the “pre-birthday blues,” he says. And it’s so obvious that some bloggers even begin to notice that Shari’s, well, gone poof.

Well, it’s not like my birthday’s just around the corner because it’s not. Or like I’m feeling the ever famous “quarter-life crisis” because I’m much too young for that (depends on how you look at it though…if I live to be only 80 years old, then 20 is the QLC, right?). I think what I’m feeling now doesn’t even have anything to do with the age or the event, y’know? If you’ve been a reader of this blog for quite some time now, then you’d notice the ever so often absences with this same old lame-o reason: I don’t feel like blogging.

Senator Trillanes to attend Senate Sessions

July 25, 2007

Joker Arroyo and Miriam Santiago argued that to allow Trillanes to attend the sessions would mean that the Congress is giving special treatment to a man facing court martial charges and rebellion. I must admit that what they say is true, but what about the continued special treatment of PGMA, Esperon and Bedol? These culprits have evaded impeachment and jail, respectively, for the longest time and yet, we see no Joker or Miriam coming down to strike her with their great oratorical speeches in the Senate.

It’s just sad to see Joker and my once favorite Miriam Santiago be weighed down by becoming political mongrels of a sham president. I mean, these two senators have been recognized for their being outspoken and upright, for defending the Constitution and shaming the people that trample on it and it’s laws. What the hell could have made these two seasoned senators turn their backs on justice and become nothing more than mere puppets? They’ve lost their vigor and, not to mention, their sanity in joining the midget’s side. Too sad, really.

But what’s even more annoying is the fact that Escudero, Pangilinan and Peter Cayetano are said to have jumped over the administration’s fence as well. These young senators were given the people’s trust and confidence to bring down PGMA and forward her impeachment case. Gosh, even Manny Villar is rumored to have joined the pro-GMA group! No wonder the GO senators are grinding their teeth in rage.

But honestly, I do not see Legarda or Lacson as true oppositionists. If given enough time, I think these two have their own agendas to tend to when 2010 arrives. But for now, I guess they’re trying to join the people’s group, the supposed GO, to gain massive support. But really, can we trust them? I don’t. Whenever I see Legarda’s face on t.v., I can’t help but get annoyed by her smug and stiff expressions and seemingly insincere intentions. And when Lacson appears on t.v., I get the impression that if he’ll become president on 2010, the whole country will be under a cloud of pseudo martial law where everyone is tapped and monitored.

So I pose this question: do we have true oppotionists in the Senate? Or if there are, are they for the people?

French Version of Survivor in Palawan

July 25, 2007

Why be excited about Survivor: China…

If we could get more excited about this!

The seventh season of Koh Lanta, the French version of Survivor, had its contestants stranded on the remotest islands of Palawan. It began broadcasting last month.

And apparently, the Philippines is among the most frequent Survivor locations, aside from Malaysia, Dominican Republic, and Panama. Palawan became the site for the Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, and the Dutch/Belgian versions. Meanwhile, the third season of the Japanese version was done in Siquijor.

Would you like to be exiled to Dapitan?

July 25, 2007

dapitan-house.jpg

Figure it out: What was it like to be deported and exiled 115 years ago, when there were no telephone, malls, family, and faster means of transportation? And your only link to the world was through a snail mail, which perhaps you could not even depend upon because you fear that perhaps, the Spaniards were prying into your letters to Josephine Bracken or Ferdinand Blumentritt.

A Bitch Attack…Almost

July 24, 2007

Making my usual rounds of bookstores, I was able to hunt down the elusive George Orwell classic, 1984 (elusive for me because I can’t find it in all the bookstores I’ve gone to). Then, at NBS SM North EDSA, I found it nestled in between Animal Farm (by the same author) and Bleak House (by Charles Dickens), being the result of NBS’ aversion to arranging books alphabetically based on the author’s name. It’s a Signet Classic paperback edition, with a deep black pupil inside a bright blue iris as background of the title.

1984.jpg

I might post a review once I finished it and if my clinic and duty schedule do not get in the way.

There were no second thoughts plucking that book from the shelf. One reason is that it’s only P275 and I’ve got P200 in my NBS E-purse. Another reason, the more important one, is that I’d like to know how Eric Blair (writing as George Orwell) played with doublethink in the novel.

And, of course, I bought it because it’s a classic.

Clutching my newfound treasure, I went to the cashier (there wasn’t even a line). She punched in the required codes and numbers.

And then, it happened…

Cinemalaya

July 24, 2007

To watch Cinemalaya, right where the action is, is one of my 100 things to do (at least for this gap-year). I think there is no excuse to watch at least one film since I can and usually go to the area at least once a week. So there, I did my research and chose my first film. I won’t say anything else in the meantime except for go watch it for yourself! =)
