Foot in Mouth Disease

August 31, 2007

A colleague and I were going back to the office after spending a hellish morning at Quezon City Hall. Naturally, our conversation topic was about local government units. She was a sweet old lady that everybody liked. But since our responsibilities at work don’t always intersect, I really didn’t know all that much about her.

“Makati’s City Hall is a lot better than Quezon City’s. Have you been there?” she asked me.

“Really? I don’t think so,” I replied.

“Oh it’s really nice. The lines are much shorter. It’s not as hot. And they even have an elevator.”

“Cool. Hey, how do you know? Do you live in Makati?”

She said yes. Then she proceeded to tell me about the perks of being a Makati resident.

SHARE YOUR BLESSINGS… SPONSOR A CHILD AND BE HAPPY!!! :-)

August 31, 2007

Four days ago, I was feeling sad and down because i felt that my life was going nowhere.
i didnt know what I am here for, didnt know what should I do with my life. That longing
and the feeling of emptiness led me to search for the meaning of my being.
Ive been reading books hoping I could find some answers about what I was feeling.
But you know, the promise of God is very much alive and true… that is if you look around, you will surely find what you’re looking for.

Yesterday, I was meeting a friend somewhere in Pasig, and while waiting for him,
I passed my time strolling around in a mall there, doing nothing in particaular,
just looking around. As I was walking, I saw this one stall in the middle of hallway
of that big mall. I approached it for no reason at all, just for the sake of looking
and satisfying my curiosty.

And there it was, the chance that I was just looking for. The chance to help other
people and be of service to them. As I promised to myself, I want to do something good
out of my empty life and share it to others, well atleast part of my time.
Now, i joined forces wth the organization called World Vision Foundation
(www.worldvision.org.ph) which aims to send unpriveleged kids to school so they can be
able to help their family when they finish their education and return the favor to the
society and hopefully become good citizens of this country.

I am now officially sponsoring one child. I am yet to receive the profile of my
sponsored child and im excited! After signing up the form of sponsorship, I cant hide the
good feeling that i was experiencing that very moment… In an instant, I felt that there
was something lifted out of my chest. The feeling was incomparable, it was such a joy
knowing I can be able to help someone have a better life.

So, anyone there who wants to sponsor a child u can just visit the site
www.worldvision.org.ph. Share your blessings!!!

Closing The Chapter On The Malu Fernandez Issue, Part 1

August 31, 2007

Author’s note:  While composing the post, I realized that it has become too lengthy to be posted as one entry.  So, I’ve decided to break this up into several posts.  I guess there’s just so much brewing inside me, having held myself back from responding to those that I’ve read, waiting for the right time.  Well, I think the time has arrived to let it all out.

For tonight, I give you the first part of the series.

*     *     *     *     *

For 2 weeks there has been an ongoing furor on the Malu Fernandez article published in People Asia Magazine and her supposed apology statement. Everyone who was been apalled, dismayed, or insulted by her statements and who has access to the Internet must have given their opinions and sentiments on the issue, of which some were raw, while others were more controlled. All of these happening online, of course. But it’s about time that the issue be tackled in the real world.

The Malu Fernandez Issue in ANC’s Media In Focus

The issue, I think, reached its height when it was picked up by mainstream media, which has brought it to the attention of those who’re not bloggers or those who’re not aware of the skirmishes happening online. The issue, then, became a topic in ANC’s Media in Focus last night, August 30, with Benj Espina (not Medina) of Atheista.net and Josel Gonzales of selvo.wordpress.com representing the bloggers and Alex Magno, Lorraine Belmonte, and Ricky Carandang representing the mainstream media (though Ricky Carandang can be said to represent bloggers as well because he is a blogger himself). Questions regarding internet culture, blogging responsibility, the impact of new media vs. traditional media, and a lot more were discussed, in the light of the awareness raised by the Malu Fernandez issue. The discussion closed with Che Che Lazaro saying that Malu Fernandez made a mistake in writing such crass and discriminatory remarks against the OFWs but those who were offended and retaliated should have acted more decently and responsibly and with less crass.

Overall, I liked how the discussion flowed. There are two things that I want to point out, though:

  • It seems that the segment portrayed the entire blogging community as a lynch mob. I beg to disagree. While that there are those who obviously and undeniably behaved like they were part of a mob (I will try to discuss more about mob psychology in a later post), there are those who, even with different opinions, still held on to what reason tells them what is right. While almost all bloggers (except for one blogger who supposedly posted something in defense of Malu Fernandez) do have the opinion that Malu Fernandez did wrong, it is the manner of disagreement that spelled the difference between those who wanted to settle the issue in a more sensible and rational manner and those who simply wanted the issue to end by screaming that they were offended and that it was enough reason why the demand for Malu’s resignation and apology is outright fair. As I’ve said in one of my posts (or was it in the comments section of a post?), this issue indeed triggered a lot of emotions and these emotions tell us that something wrong was done to us. However, it is not enough that we succumb to “emotion reason” to settle this as rational human beings. We need to point out the flaws and the fallacies which are evidence why this issue must be settled by asking for Malu Fernandez to acknowledge her mistake.

Due process for Joma

August 31, 2007

By now, much would have been said on the unexpected arrest of erstwhile Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Ma. Sison. Some of the initial responses, I have already mentioned in an earlier post.

In the meantime, the International Day of the Disappeared was commemorated yesterday. Also, Inday Nita Daluz, a popular martial law era radio host and anti-dictatorship icon in Cebu, died of heart and kidney illness.

At the moment, the Dutch envoy defends the arrest. The trial is already set. The military goes into red alert to prepare itself for possible reprisals from the NPA as the NDF affirms the fears expressed by Bayan the other day, saying the arrest would mean the end of peace talks.

Matsuri Tsukuba 2007

August 31, 2007

nebuta

The first time I heard of the word “nebuta,” it was while watching a TV program featuring the famous floats that the “Nebuta Festival” of Aomori is known for. Although I lived in the Tohoku region for more than three years, not once did I have the opportunity to visit Aomori (I got as far as Akita, though).

Fortunately, right here in Tsukuba we can still enjoy a smaller version of the “nebuta.”

What’s a matsuri?

August 31, 2007

I just signed up with Zlio Shop. Zlio is your own shop online, all for free. It is totally different from Amazon because with Zlio you have full control with your ‘Adsense’ ads that appear on your own shop.

Nothing to lose with Zlio. Why?

2. Zlio can now earn you money every time someone clicks on some items in your store!
3. You earn from your Adsense too, just like how you earn from your own blog!
4. It is promoted by Adsense itself! So no worries of possible scam or what. In fact, I learned about Zlio from the Adsense blog.

Leading and Managing: Myths and realizations

August 31, 2007

It is not easy to be in a new work setting especially if you are dealing with a close knit group—with its own set of norms and subculture that are intensely engraved in their way of doing things. This is doubly hard when you begin to realize that your authority is being insulted, and respect and courtesy are forgotten virtues of basic social interaction. If these ever happened among friends, it is easy to forgive and forget. However, it becomes a larger concern if these would ever occur in a work setting. p>

Silverchair - Young Modern Review

August 31, 2007

Time hasn’t been kind to Silverchair, after a hugely successful run, three albums long. The boy band got bored, so they changed gears and added orchestra and other pretentious gank to their sound. As a result, their fourth album Diorama flopped. Besieged by anorexia and arthritis, their singer, Daniel Johns was forced to quit touring for a year or so. So in between pleasing his Natalie and collaborating guitar-less-ly (arthritis remember?) with another Australian dance star, Paul Mac. He decided he misses his two mates, and Silverchair has now made a comeback with their fifth album, Young Modern. What has changed?

It’s Been A Year Ivan…

August 31, 2007

It has been a year Ivan. I suppose you’re pretty happy now wherever you are. I know that you and Rambo are together and I know that you’ll most probably be smiling down on us and sometimes are with us from time to time.

Last year, I remember, I was here at the office and we were having a seminar of some sort. I have been receiving text messages from our co-CYFers and they were asking me to pray for your family whom you’ve left behind. Of course, I did not believe those messages. I even called up Leonel and we were joking that you were yet up to another round of your crazy antics.

But we all guessed wrong. I only confirmed your passing away when I texted Ian who even had used Kiko’s celphone just to inform me that what they all were saying were true. I just could not believe it.

Stopping climate disaster from becoming reality

August 31, 2007

Reflections on the film The Day After Tomorrow

The Day After Tomorrow takes us to one of the many possible future scenarios that faces our planet, the very real possibility of catastrophic man-made disaster. And although the scenes portrayed in the film were somewhat exaggerated, altogether, the film raises a point that is very relevant to every one of us.

The film essentially showed the perils resulting from human kind’s reckless abuse of nature, especially through the wasteful burning of harmful fossil fuels such as coal and other substances. This is directly related to the long standing issues of energy consumption and conservation in the poorer nations.

Pagsasalin kay George Orwell

August 30, 2007

Insired by Jego, who has begun translating CS Lewis into Filipino, I begin my translation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. He was probably spurred by the discussion at Manolo’s blog over the lack of good translations of English works into the vernacular. I took the liberty of changing the setting from England to the Philippines. Inihaw, pagdamutan po ninyo ang aking pagsasalin.

Dried Emotion can be Tragic

August 30, 2007

Walking home the other day with an earphone stuck on one ear listening to one of my old fave songs, emoting at every word, taking a ride on my own emotional rollercoaster I almost saw what could have been the nicest tragedy I could ever imagine happening on me.

*warning, suicidal emo shit below*

So yeah, ever since the bloom of the Kami nAPO Muna album, I’ve been asking where this song was and who revived it for the tribute. Yes, ladies and gentlemen through the influence of my own mother I’m a die hard fan of Apo Hiking’s songs even when I was just a little girl, while everyone else were dancing through the tune of 100% pure love plus more of the Universal Motion Dancer’s Butterfly and I saw the sign, and some other danceable songs which I think I better keep to myself now before you start throwing tomatoes at me saying “booohoooo….”

The melody of the song really struck me at a young age, just the melody coz I never really knew or remember the lyrics, not until I heard it again being played on the radio just recently. The melody was so strong (the same feeling I get after watching a powerful play) that after learning how to play ‘London Bridge is Falling Down’ on the piano, I was able to widow the first few lines of this song (which is really quite simple anyway).

With the power of technology (thank you Google!), finally, I’m able to savor the song more.

Ten things I want to say

August 30, 2007

Most of us need to say something to someone, but for one reason or another, we just couldn’t find the strength to do it. Perhaps we just aren’t that expressive or even if we are, we are not quite sure how the person we’re saying it to will react. I, too, have quite a lot to say to the most important people in my life and although I see them everyday, I don’t really tell them what’s in my heart. Well, there isn’t really any reason not to, but I just don’t. Maybe, someday, but not today…

Being in Malu’s Squatty, Well-manicured Toes

August 30, 2007

I promised myself that I would never write a post about Malu Fernandez and her witty and funny article in Manila Standard. I thought that I could content myself in responding to other blogs and ditching her there. I didn’t think it important to waste a post or a space to such an elitist swine but the temptation to roast her alive in my page is a really sweet idea for me.

Honestly I couldn’t blame her. I pity her for having bruises on her legs, for having been ’sardined’ and pestered in the economy class with the Pinoy OFWs. You couldn’t blame a fat git for not being able to sit comfortably in a chair specifically made for Homo sapiens. Being witty and all, did she think she could fit herself in that puny place? Of course not. That’s why I think she has only been in the first class section all her life.

I need to apologize to Malu as well. I need to say sorry for being poor and underprivileged. Because unlike some members of the elite class in this 3rd world country, we spend half our lives studying and doing honest labor and service to society. Unlike her lot, we need to study so freaking hard and think that by doing great in school, we are guaranteed of jobs to help us and our families in the future. Unlike her, we know the true value of work and being smart. I am sorry that her ideas of being ‘witty and smart‘ mean to deride other people or worse, ridicule them of their socio-economic background. But again, being witty and smart, she should have known better than to insult her countrymen.

What? No Asian Idol?

August 30, 2007

According to a moderator over at the Indonesian Idol forums, the prospect of an Asian Idol competition is now slim to none.

Apparently, the participating countries (namely India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam) did not agree with the proposed voting system by host country Indonesia. The tallying of votes would not be in a Eurovision-styled ranking-based system that we saw in World Idol, but rather only Indonesian residents are allowed to cast their votes for Asian Idol.

That would have been downright silly, devah? I mean, it’s like giving Indonesia a free hand in making their Indonesian Idol (who would have been represented by their latest winner Rini Wulandari) the eventual winner. Are the organizers afraid that their bet would eventually lose to our very own Mau Marcelo had the voting been participated by all 7 countries? Are they afraid that the eventual winner would not “look like” an Asian stereotype (Mau being half African-Puerto Rican)?

I still hope that Asian Idol would still be held, even if it would be just some “get together” concert with no competition involved.

How Throwing a Tantrum got me out of a Ticket

August 29, 2007

The MMDA Officer waved at me to pull over just as I was about to turn left on the intersection of Ayala and EDSA.

What now I asked myself as the grossly overweight, so-called enforcer of the law lumbered up to my window.

“What’s the problem officer?” I asked.

“Sir, you committed a traffic violation,” said the officer helpfully. He towered over the mini-SUV I was driving, and he spoke with a raspy gutteral voice which he uses to mumble his words. Trying to understand what he says is not unlike divining meaning from the growling of the neighbor’s ill-tempered dog.

“What?!” I said as I made an effort to sit as closer as to hear him better.

“Sir, you committed a traffic violation,” he said in his mumble-speek. “You were driving in the yellow lane and then you swerved out of the yellow lane when you saw me.”

Hosted vs. Stand Alone Blog Platforms: Pros and Cons

August 29, 2007

This post is a part of PinoyBlogero’s “Starting out a New Blog” Series. The said series contains step by step tips and guides in helping bloggers create a new blog.

Starting out a new blog!

Yesterday, I have given a brief overview of the two types of blog platforms and their differences from one another. Today, I will be laying out the advantages and disadvantages of both blog platforms in order for you to have a better understanding of what to choose when thinking of building a new blog.
In the red corner, Hosted Blog Platform!
*applause*

Pros

  • Easy on the pocket – Hosted blog platforms are known to be easy on a blogger’s budget because they offer their services for a small fee or at no cost at all.
  • Easy setup – Hosted blogs are relatively easy to set up. All you have to do is to sign up, fill out a few details, after a few minutes, you are ready to blog!
  • Worry free – The great thing about hosted blog platforms is that they really do justice to the term “easy blogging”. Everything is already taken care of, no need to worry about hosting issues or other stuffs.
  • Easy to pick up – No use for help manuals here, managing a blog is made easy because of the user-friendly features that most hosted blog platforms have.
  • Customer Service – If ever you get into trouble or in need of assistance, hosted blog platforms often have a help desk or a forum to help you with your problem.
  • Automatic updates – Whenever a minor or a major update is released by a hosted blogging platform, all the blogs under it are updated automatically. No need to manually install anything.

Pinoy Dies in the Outback

August 29, 2007

A Filipino OFW recently died under suspicious circumstances somewhere up in the Northern Territory. Three months into his work term, Pedro Balading’s remains were found on the road as he was reportedly thrown off a speeding vehicle. His body was flown home in June. Balading, along with 2 other Filipinos were reportedly targets of racial discrimination, abuse and were made to do tasks in violation of their 457 skilled worker visa. Read here.
