A way out of the margins

Crossposted from my weblog.

FOR about five days now, I’ve been running a survey on the following question: “Are you in favor of changing the name of Plaza Quezon to Plaza Arejola?”

Polls like these are unscientific, with my mostly anonymous readers being the universe of respondents, and actual respondents being equally unknown, except for those who explained their votes, like Bikolano writer Maryanne Moll and Irvin Sto. Tomas, a masteral student specializing on the Filipino language who I believe runs the most popular blog hereabouts.

Nonetheless, the verdict is loud and clear: as I write this with two days to go, only three of the 27 respondents (11%) agreed with the proposition; the rest thumbed it down.

Let me offer two reasons as to why this is so, after conversations with people like neophyte Councilor Nathan Sergio, Inquirer correspondent Johnny Escandor, his Bicol Mail editor Joe Perez and Ben Barrameda: One, Gen. Ludovico Arejola, a native son of Naga who led the resistance movement against the American invaders more than 100 years ago, remains a largely unknown figure in this city; and two, some people know him too well to believe he is not worthy enough to displace the late President Quezon from one of Naga’s most important seat of honor.

The Principle of Equivalent Trade: Read My Blog, I Will Read Yours

Read my blog, I'll read yours

Let me see. What should I write here?

I am a person who strongly believes that everything in this world is perfectly balanced. In spite of the constant changes that the world undergoes everyday, balance is maintained through the Principle of Equivalent Trade.

The principle states that when an entity loses/gains something, it must also gain/lose something of equivalent value to achieve equilibrium. For example, in order for you to get your hands on a McBurger, you must give up 50 pesos to the cashier which is the exact equivalent of a McBurger Meal.

Shifting out of balance
Everyday, I wake up to see lots of messages on my comment inbox and tagboard waiting for me to be read and replied to. There are those comments who express their thanks and delight, there are also those who disagree and share their own thoughts.

But every once in a while, among those piles of messages, we receive messages that are similar to these:

“Hi! Blog hop! ^_^ ”

“Wow nice site! Visit mine!”

“Hi po! Please visit my blog at [Blog URL]. Please read my posts and don’t forget to comment. Thanks!”

I have been on the blogging business long enough for me to know that these kinds of messages are just baits for you to visit their blogs (Let’s call them blog-baits for the sake of discussion).

Such a method is already a common practice in the blogosphere nowadays. Bloggers hop from one blog to another leaving a message which points to their own blogs. Then they just sit back and wait to see if anybody would drop by to read the stuffs they have prepared.

Such a method is an easy way to get a few visitors on your blog, but it is also the cheapest way to do so.

One Year After Rambo’s Death

Rambo Ambo GuranJuly 31, 2007. It has been a year since Rambo (Ambo to his friends in school and Rei-Mon his given Christian name) was gunned down by still unknown men. Whoever they are, people are still wondering if they’ll still be caught. Yes, I’m saying ‘they’ because one gunned Rambo down while another was waiting in a motorcycle not far away.

And that ended his life that early Monday morning. It was just a day after he celebrated his birthday with his family when it happened and such an event has caused much grief, pain, and suffering to his parents, his siblings, his friends, and all those whose hearts and lives he has touched and has become part of.

Baklaan Alert! International Mr. Gay Competition

Remember when I featured Mr. Gay Philippines? The winner represents our kawntree in the biennial International Mr. Gay Competition, which will be held on January 2008 in Hollywood, California.

More gay hottiness as we meet some of the candidates (representing countries you won’t expect; last year they had a candidate from frickin’ Vatican City) after the jump.

Jump.

Where is Jonas?

Disregarding a Supreme Court Order, the military deliberately failed to present the missing activist Jonas Burgos at an hearing of the Court of Appeals yesterday. Earlier, officials of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced exactly what they just did:

“We will appear before the court and we will respectfully reiterate our earlier statement that Jonas Burgos is not in our custody and that we are not aware of his whereabouts,” AFP information chief Lt. Col. Bartolome Bacarro told reporters…”

I think this is completely misleading. Contrary to the AFP information chief’s statements, the military has not been ignorant of Jonas’ whereabouts.

I mean, was it not an AFP general himself who categorically stated that Jonas was a member of the communist-l

ed New People’s Army? The official, Lt. gen. Romeo Tolentino, who spoke like a longtime buddy of Jonas, was even quoted by the Inquirer saying “Kasi parang masalimuot ang buhay niyan e, masalimuot (trans. His life seems really complicated).”

Now how’s that for not knowing Jonas’ whereabouts?
