DVD Library #8: Look, Up in the Sky! – The Amazing Story of Superman

Although I hate Bryan Singer (don’t ask), I love documentaries. Especially if it’s about comics. I thought long and hard about getting this documentary about Superman, and I finally gave in. I mean, come on. It’s Superman.Continue reading ‘DVD Library #8: Look, Up in the Sky! – The Amazing Story of Superman’
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
To be honest, I’m not the biggest Harry Potter (HP) fan around, nor a die-hard, insane believer of magic. It was only by chance that I got to watch HP and the Philosopher’s Stone and by necessity now that I have kept reading Rowling’s 7 (not counting Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) books of the Boy Who Lived. Unlike other HP fans around the globe, I have read all the books only once but read them like I have my beloved Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy by Libbie Henrietta Hyman. I must admit that to indulge in HP’s parallel world for someone like me is truly incredible; like a good break from doing ten scientific papers, special projects and loads of exams all at once.
Although fantastic, I must add that her books were written very carefully in that it never mentioned any religion like Christianity or Islam or Paganism etc. because if it did, the matter of explaining the whole concept to the kids would create a massive problem for the elders and, not to mention, a breach in our belief of God (Please correct me if I’m wrong). Surely, HP presented that evil could exist but what of God or his goodwill? Deathly Hallows even mentioned Death but nothing concrete on angels or of Heaven or Hell. In Chapter 35 King’s Cross, when HP and Dumbledore were talking, I sort of had the impression that they were in a place that should be for souls, I mean because at that time, both were supposedly dead. But as it turned out, their conversation was all just in HP’s head:
‘Tell me one last thing,’ said Harry. ‘Is this real? Or has his been happening inside my head?’
Dumbledore beamed at him, and his voice sounded loud and strong in Harry’s ears even though the bright mist was descending again, obscuring the his figure.
‘Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?’

Are You feeling Blue?
Are You Feeling Blue?
Once in our lives, there comes a time when we feel so sad, frustrated, rejected, and dejected, depressed and in some worst case scenarios, suicidal….
There are number of reasons why a person may feel that way. It maybe because of some things that concerns our personal and family life, everyday work related stresses, and pressures from other people, relationship problems which includes friendship or relationship with the opposite sex or loss of a loved one.
For some people it can be emotionally draining and physically exhausting when they are faced with such situations wherein they have to make decisions on how they should deal with the problem. Others resort to aggression, withdrawal, and blaming oneself or other people of their misfortune and sometimes we even ask God silly questions as to why we are experiencing those negative feelings. These things that are happening to our emotions are inevitable because we are living in a very cruel and worldly place wherein most of us are very much consumed and preoccupied with amassing earthly possessions at the expense of other people which more often than not results into chaos and misunderstanding among ourselves and to the extent of forgetting the real value and essence of living a good, honest and decent life.
As humans, we are subject to feel pain, pleasure, happiness and other negative emotions that we can possibly feel. One thing is for sure, that living in this world is not a bed of roses and that there are so many things that we have to endure as we go through the different stages of life.
Now the question is how do we counter those negative thoughts and emotions that at some point if not addressed properly and promptly can crush our vulnerable spirit?
Well, if we look around us we will see that life is not that bad at all. There are so many simple things that can make us smile; like the face of an innocent child, the blossoming of the flowers in the garden, the beautiful sceneries around us, and many more to mention. All we just have to do is take a look around us, appreciate and be satisfied with all the things that we have.
There are lots of things that we can do to overcome that bad energy in our mind and soul. First of all, we have to acknowledge our inner SELF- the psychological monster that’s been bugging us spiritually and mentally, only then can we be able to resolve the nagging negative voice inside us…
No matter how shattered we are, we can still find peace and healing in the face of the most devastating situations. To heal our broken spirit we have to share our sufferings with other people. We can do this by giving part of our time to comfort the souls of those who are the victims of all forms of abuse, neglected, broken-hearted and the sick. It is important for us to realize that these people are also experiencing the same problems that we are dealing with. It may also be comforting to be in their presence because with them we feel an air of camaraderie knowing that we are not alone in our suffering and that others understand what we are going through and that they are there willing to help and encourage us to go on….
Another approach is to cry our heart out…It is never a bad thing to cry and let out all our heartaches flow from our system. We should also accept within ourselves that we are weak, helpless and that without the help of others we can do nothing…
Let our tears pour down from our eyes and let out the toxins that have been poisoning our body and undermining our soul…and lastly, leave our life in the welcoming hands of Our Creator. Let Him lead us wherever He wants us to take. Just simply surrender to Him and definitely everything will turn out right. We should keep in mind that there is always a rainbow after the storm…A rainbow that will make us smile and allow us to embrace life once again. A life we once knew before the storm hit us….Let us celebrate life!!!
The Dynamic Filipino
It is nice to be born of a Filipino Race, because a Filipino citizen never quit, he is brought up with a heart of courage and a heart of kindness and is never pessimistic but rather optimistic.
A Filipino family loves to see his childrens growing wih faith and fear of the Lord, he always sees to it the welfare of his family. he never let them down, he always think of their future.
A Filipino always practice the spirit of ” Bayanihan.” as can be seen in times of Calamities and disasters, either the incident happens here or abroad. they are never hostile to others but they are very hospitable even to the foreigners.
A Filipino is a nature lover, he loves the mother nature, he never cut the trees but rather takes care of it, he never throw garbage on the seas and other bodies of water, he loves the mother nature as he loves himself.
This descriptions makes a true and good Filipino, but as time goes by, the true Filipino has become dynamic, the Filipinos nowadays are pessimistic and sees no hope in everything, we only entrust our fate to God, and to other lucky charm things. the Filipinos are now taking for granted their Families, the parents are not taking good care of their children as the traditional filipino does before. childrens are on the streets making money for their parents instead of going to school and learn or play.
The spirit of ” Bayanihan” has been gone, it was not practiced as it is done before in the barrios or even in the city. some are now hostile even to our fellow race, we see each other as a competitor or as an enemy and not as our brother or sisters. the new Filipino practice more the “crab mentality” which is not a good attitude and we also practice the “collonial mentality” which is not good with our economy.
and lastly, our being with the environment is not like before. today we cut trees for nothing, we kill the animals for nothing, some kill the animals and treees for profit sake. houses are beung buiilt in the former forests, the sea is being recleaimed and converted into cities. is this what modernization and evolution has taken us? I wish that changes may takes place but the traditional Filipino will not evolve into an insensitive and inhuman race.
