Site of the Month: Layer Tennis
September 30, 2007

When thinking of something that goes well together, there are few things in the brain that rushes to the front of the line. Peanut butter and jelly, gin and tonic, coffee and cream, milk and cookies. But we, designers, are a weird bunch, Coudal Partners, a Chicago based design agency thought simultaneously about tennis and designers. Whatever train of thought that led them to that, we might never know, but what came after is a novel and fun website.

Can’t Please Everyone
September 30, 2007
I think that by this time, my readers already know the small “brouhaha” caused by the movie review of ‘I’ve Fallen for You‘ that I wrote. (Thank goodness, it’s dying now.) Well, that’s life. I can’t please everyone in the same way that the movie can’t please everyone.
Although receiving online flak is relatively new to me. It really isn’t anything new. I was surprised to receive this in my inbox a few months ago:

A Must-Read for Filipinos: Letter to a Christian Nation by Sam Harris
September 30, 2007
— St Francis of Assisi
In a country where the devil wears condoms and the morning-after pill Postinor is illegal, I was surprised to find that the book, Letter to a Christian Nation by Sam Harris, is available at National Book Store.
Pro-atheist?
Letter to a Christian Nation is considered to be pro-atheism. The author uses a simple argument to help Christians understand what atheism is… Continue reading

Seeing
September 30, 2007
The stunning images of the Burmese peoples’ popular uprising flowing to the rest of the world through the internet (before the military regime started blocking information) brings to mind the passages of a book I read earlier this month.
When I started reading Seeing, I commented that Jose Saramago’s plot, where disillusioned voters from the fictional nation’s capital voted but left the ballots blank, is not applicable in the Philippines. Blank ballot results would only make electoral fraud operators Comelec and their traditional politician principals very happy.
The book, however, does not only attack the the traditional politicians and parties role in degrading the state institution’s credibility and fomenting disillusionment among the greater populace. In 300 witty pages, Saramago described, like the recent events in Myanmar have clearly shown us, how the State reacts when threatened by the people.
Filipino culture and economic malaise
September 30, 2007
The Doing Business 2008 report, an annual study conducted by the World Bank and International Finance Corporation, states that the Philippines ranked 133rd out of 178 economies surveyed in terms of ease of putting up and doing business in the country:
Regulations affecting 10 stages of a business life are measured from the perspective of the entrepreneur. The stages are: Starting a business, dealing with licenses, employing workers, registering property, getting credit, protecting investors, paying taxes, trading across borders, enforcing contracts and closing a business.
According to the survey, the Philippines is lagging behind other Asian markets, including India (120th) and China (83th) whose phenomenal growth has made Asia the fastest growing region in the world. [Inquirer.net]
Any local businessman would affirm the findings of the study; the plethora of requirements and paperwork and the inefficiency of the bureaucracy will squeeze too much available capital and occupy too long a time that many entrepreneurs, including budding ones, consider quitting before day one.
It appears though, that it is even worse when one decides to close a business:
Teacher Resources for Filipinos
September 30, 2007
I have this big dream. It might sound a little too big, though, but I want to start a Teacher Resource website for Filipinos. In the wee hours of procrastinating my lesson plans and/or looking for what good activities I could use in my classes, all are resources for western classrooms.
The Filipino classroom is much more different. We have a quasi standard set curriculum for most schools in basic education. For example, in English, Music and Arts in high school, the first year focuses on Philippine literature, music and arts. In the second year, Afro-Asian. The third year focuses on Anglo-American or western, while the fourth year focuses on the world as a whole.
Well… What I’m saying is… You won’t really be able to find teacher resources on, say, Noli Me Tangere or Philippine History.
The Stillwater Experience
September 30, 2007
The Husband and I celebrated our 8th year anniversary yesterday. This time, we opted to celebrate it differently by having our own “two-gether” time. The past years, we celebrated with our kids, I usually cook something special for dinner and they (Husband and kids) exert extra effort not to create a stressful environment to make the day special. We also have our own traditional gift-giving, we troop to the mall together and once there, we go our separate ways and hunt for the best gift our money can buy. Sometimes, they can be expensive gifts, other times, just pretty knick-knacks we both can use and not too damaging to the pockets.
This year, though, we decided to pamper ourselves…(continue reading here…)
Beware of the MRT Orcses
September 30, 2007
I said goodbye to Makati several weeks ago and transferred to a nice place in Mandaluyong. Now I live in a three-bedroom-three-floor house. Coolness. Problem is if Makati to Pasay is far, then Mandaluyong to Pasay is farther. Right?
This was the first thing that I considered before abandoning my Makati Avenue Condo. Fortunately, I found a great and cheap solution: MRT. When I was in Makati this was not an option that I considered because I had to walk a kilometer to Buendia before I can ride a jeepney to the MRT. That’s simply too much effort for me.
Better in Mandaluyong though. A minute’s walk away from my house and I can ride a jeepney to the MRT. It IS farther, but definitely more convenient. Also, it’s nearer to the Mega Mall, and Galleria. This is a plus for me because there is a Krispy Kreme in the Mega Mall. Read more here.
Sizzling Bonsai
September 30, 2007
Uprooting Bonsai plants,
chopping them up,
cooking them,
and serving them in hot sizzling plates!?
Hmmm. Think again.

Give your heart a check-up
September 30, 2007
Today, the last Sunday of September, is World Heart Day.Movie Review: No Reservations
September 30, 2007
No Reservations is much, much more than the story of 2 chefs who do things very differently and yet fall in love. It also speaks about grief and recovery; that being strong does not necessarily mean that you can’t show emotion; about finding love when you least expect it; and that life is not always in your control.
Catherine Zeta-Jones plays Kate, one of New York’s finest chefs. She demands perfection and has devoted her life to the kitchen, nixing love and relationships. She exists only to please herself. All these changes when raising a child suddenly becomes her responsibility. The hiring of an Italian sous chef played by Aaron Eckhart rocks her world all the more. How she manages is what the rest of the movie is all about. That’s just the appetizer.

Hopia Fix
September 29, 2007
For some time, during my summer vacations in San Isidro, Nueva Ecija, I enjoyed eating hopia. I would usually buy from my aunt’s sari-sari store at P3.00 per pack. Those were the small hopia with red beans as filling. A summer day won’t be complete without a trip to the store to get a pack or two of hopiang munggo and a bottle of ice-cold POP cola. I would sometimes get the hopiang baboy, only if the red bean favorite is not available.
Whenever I’d drop by their store, my cousins, with an ever-annoying grin, would still tease me, “Hey! We know what you’re going to buy… hopia and POP cola! Correct?!” Like before, I would go back to our house, with no more appetite for lunch or dinner, as I just had my hopia fix.
But that was a few years ago. I’m now an OFW here in Singapore. It was only recently that I came to know about similar delicacies from neighboring Malaysia, Penang’s tau sar peah and Ipoh’s heong peah (Is it why we Filipinos call it hopia?). It was only here that I have seen hopia in an utterly different presentation, somewhat more sophisticated and with a slightly different name. They call it mooncake. It’s still hopia for me.

Are you rooting for the eagle or the archer?
September 29, 2007
Much has been said about the Ateneo-La Salle basketball rivalry. It has even reached The New York Times. Krispy Kreme even issued a new doughnut to celebrate the rivalry.
I’m not rooting for either one. I’d rather have the plain amazing glaze doughnut. Technically, I should be rooting for the maroons. However, college basketball has never been my interest. Never saw a game while in college although I named a stuffed toy Benjie because the Maroons were very popular then.
Bloggers have revealed their colors. From their posts, we know now who’s blue and who’s green. Here’s a short list.
Displaying HTML Tags
September 29, 2007
Displaying HTML tags as texts in a web post such as this has been a challenge for me lately. Whenever I include HTML tags intended to be displayed as texts, the tags do not appear in my published posts. Although I know that I simply have to replace the close arrow bracket with this: & gt (without the space) and the open arrow bracket with this & lt (without the space), Blogger is still unable to display my HTML tags as texts.
If someone reading this knows the solution to my problem, please post a comment on this. You may also post a comment on this blogsite: Web Basics. Any helpful comments would be greatly appreciated.
My MyBlogLog Went Bonkers!
September 29, 2007
Right after merging my MyBlogLog account with my Yahoo account, my MyBlogLog ceased to work.
My avatar disappeared. I tried to upload the picture again and again, but failed. During each attempt, I was asked to crop the picture but even after cropping, it wouldn’t upload. Then I noticed that I couldn’t edit any of the fields of the profile page. Technically I could, but any changes I made were not saved.
Worst, even when I’m logged in, my name didn’t show up in the MyBlogLog widgets of the blogs I visited.
