“A Love Story” Scriptwriter Justifies the Ending of the Movie

Wow! I feel honored that the one who wrote the screenplay of A Love Story landed on my review. Vanessa came back to the entry today and after reading all the comments regarding the film, she wrote a lengthy note of her own. So I decided to transform it into a separate post. Of course, a requirement for fully understanding what Ms. Valdez writes is that you watch the movie yourself. Although some people may think that knowing plot is enough, it’s insufficient. You miss out on the dialogue and the storytelling.

Anyway, happy reading ;)

Hi Frances! Since I posted here, other people out there have been speculating on the “logical ending” I mentioned here. Some people believe that the “other logical ending” would have been Ian choosing his mistress/the mistress fighting for the affair. The thing is — THAT would have been sooooo illogical.

The Invasion

The movie The Invasion which topbills Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig was not at all what I expected. The trailer shows a space shuttle accident and Nicole Kidman evading detection by not showing emotion while walking through people whose minds have been controlled. I expected to see aliens. I did not expect the plot to be medical in nature. It is Outbreak once again but this time the offending agent is from out of this world. The problem with the movie is that although the plot is medical in nature, it neglects to address this issue altogether. Although some explanation is given, it appears far fetched and forced. Much of the movie was devoted to running and evading detection. And so you leave the moviehouse with more questions than answers.

Roti Mum coffeebun

I was walking around the mall when I smelled something good. It was past noon and my stomach was growling. Did it smell good because I had not eaten anything at all that day?

Then I chanced upon a bread store which was bright with orange lights and orange decor. I saw trays upon trays upon trays of large round dough. Hmm… I feel like having coffee all of a sudden.

I read the name of the store and I got all excited. Coffee buns. Roti Mum coffee buns. Such a warming thought.

I first tasted the coffee bun from a piece my officemate was eating a couple of weeks ago. It was bought from another store. Being a coffee lover, bread lover and basically a food lover, I was instantly attracted to the comforting feeling that the bun gave me.

The Fortune Tellers of Quiapo

Fortune tellers_erisac

They are self-proclaimed mystics — diviners who provide uncanny insight to those craving for a glimpse of the future. Their fees range from 100 pesos at the start of the session to 500 pesos and higher at the end.

Skeptics, however, regard them as mystic misfits — a gang of crackpots or fakes afforded with equal scorn as those document counterfeiters of Recto.

Nonetheless, these fortune tellers of Quiapo’s Plaza Miranda manage to remain in business; attracting a steady stream of customers who regard them with a strange mix of caution and reverence just in case they turn out to be true seers.

And in response to the public’s ambivalent attitude, they maintain a closely-knit association amongst one another for self-preservation, though adhering to a loose hierarchical order — the tarot card readers on top, the numerologists and palm readers next, and everybody else at the bottom. As with any pecking order, those on top think and act with utmost superiority; hence, the tarot card readers regard the powers of those below their rank as less potent and whose readings may lack accuracy.

Media in Focus on the Malu Fernandez Issue

In my last post about Malu Fernandez, I was looking for something concrete, a harsher punishment by the media community to throw at Malu for being irresponsible in her writing. Her resignation isn’t comforting for me; it’s just not enough. Having her sacked isn’t enough consolation for the people she’s hurt; the OFWs and all of us proud pinoys. When I read her article, I could not help but feel as if she’s ashamed to be Pinoy and that she’s afraid to be with her countrymen. That rich and poor complex in the country has got to stop. That ridiculous division should not put one above the rest and definitely, it should not make the others less of a human being.

These are the Media in Focus clips I’ve found in Pedestrian Observer.

Joey on Startalk

Since GMA7 doesn’t have ABS-CBN’s TFC, Joey de Leon’s reputation has been tarnished at some point. Besides being singled out by saying his name a couple of times in Wowowee last week, Joey’s time to fight back comes in the form of Startalk. Thanks to this segment, I think Willie would have to think of another blunt way to push the blame on Joey and GMA7 than explain his supposed ‘misgivings’ in his Wilyonaryo segment.

And has anyone of you guys seen Willie’s absurd ’sorry’ song?

Ragnarok Philippines

At first glance the Ragnarok Philippines website has a very clean and smooth design. Nothing too flashy. The structure is well designed as well. One can quickly find what he/she is looking for. Although, on the main page which shows a blog (utilizing wordpress), you can’t really see a single reference to their online forum which can be good or bad. It can play to their advantage since people would not take the blog and the forum as one. Sometimes, that brings about lesser confusion. You see when you put a recent forum posts, random forum topics block in your main page, people would not know how to deal with it. If you do market your forum as a separate entity, there would be less confusion since the entry point of forum visitors would be your forum main page. And that set up is familiar to most forumers.

For any Ragnarok fan, Ragnarok Philippines is a great find. They have lots of Ragnarok related contents such as walkthroughs, tips and tricks, and the like. You could even trade/buy and sell your items to/from their large network of Ragnabarkadahan.

Another problem that I have with Ragnarok Philippines is that some of their menus have links which are identical to those used in the main content of the blog. This would make you confused whether they are links to other Ragnarok websites or if they link to the inside content of Ragnarok Philippines. Ideally, you would make the links in your menu look bolder and striking.

The Ragnarok Philippines Forum has a broad range of topics. It does not only cover Ragnarok but also goes into topics too far from Ragnarok which is good. I also believe that their forum is well arranged and organized.

What was it like before books were invented?

Have you ever wondered what it was like before books were invented? People would have to tell their stories verbally. Can you imagine how many people we’d have walking around with authors telling them stories? Can you imagine how noisy our libraries were? Nobody would get any studying done! Then there would be the issue of checking out these authors from the library. A popular story would mean the author would be covered with “Return on date…” stamps. Think about the poor author and his skyrocketing dry cleaning bills.

Wedding Rings: Kaliwete or Kaninete?

I never really thought about which finger my wedding ring should be. When I got married and we had our exchange of vows almost three years ago (Sept 18!), my wife slipped my wedding ring into my left ring finger. That’s where it has stayed since. I have only ever taken it out a handful of times since then. Usually when I wash the car myself, which is less often than I should.

Since then though, other people have come up to me and asked me why my wedding ring was on my left hand. Some have asked that shouldn’t it be on my right. I usually respond by telling them that that’s where my wife placed it when we got married and I didn’t see any reason to move it. Some have told me that traditionally, it was placed on the right ring finger. When I ask why that is, I really haven’t gotten a good response on that other than “it’s tradition”.

So, being the inquisitive and lazy researcher that I am, I turned to the Internet for answers. Here are a few things I found.
