OFW SEX SLAVES!
The figures presented in Karlo Mongaya’s site concerning human trafficking of Filipinas is very disturbing! The video depicting how two senior citizen Americans traveled 6,000 miles away from their home, Mr. Troop Edmunds and Mr.Jerry Hawe, to rescue Lani, a Filipina from an alleged sex slavery syndicate in Malaysia was so moving. It shows how helpless Lani were, under the dictates of her ward. She went abroad in the hope of finding greener pasture only to be, allegedly, enslave through fear, intimidation, duress and, maybe, even drugged to become a puppet of her ward. What she earned out of her sweet, flesh and tears is not even enough to repay her indebtedness for food, clothing and shelter, if her ward is to sum it all. I thought that the Filipina rescued by Mr. Edmunds and Mr. Hawe from the alleged syndicate, is just among the 30 women allegedly held against their will in Limbang, Malaysia.
Research made by Karlo based on the studies conducted, however, revealed that Lani and her 30 other former companions still left in Malaysia are just part “of about 400,000 women trafficked within the Philippines annually, according to the US State Department’s Human Rights Report in 2005.” Are these Filipinas considered part of our OFWs? Are they protected by OWWA? If not for this two senior citizen Americans who stopped at nothing to recover Lani, these incident could not have been publicized. I wonder, however, what has happened to that maid in the Middle East who was allegedly raped by her ward.
The Biggest Banana I Ever Saw
Philippines is known to be a tropical country and with these type of climate, a lot of delicious fruit bearing trees are found here in our country. Bananas are one of them. I grew up knowing that these lovely eating yellow fruit are small and the biggest that I have known is what we call “saba” . I stand corrected it should be the “Bungolan”
This one definitely changed my perception, one gigantic banana.
Wordpress 2.2.3 Security Updates
This wordpress update was released two days ago and for those who have not updated their wordpress installation yet, please do.
2.2.3 is a security and bug-fix release for the 2.2 series. Since this is a security release, we suggest you upgrade immediately. Two of the fixes are high priority.
All you have to do in this update is to replace a couple of files in your wordpress installation (assuming you are currently using wordpress 2.2.2). Here is a list of files you need to replace from wordpress 2.2.2 to upgrade to 2.2.3.

If we would look at the present state of the blogosphere, we would notice that the population of Pinoy bloggers is only a small fraction when compared to the overall number of Pinoy users who use the internet today. Like what I said on my article, “Pinoy Awareness on Blogging“, I have observed that the blogosphere still has great potential to grow, the only thing that we need is to promote ourselves not just to the online world, but also to the outside world.
A lot of bloggers today, including yours truly, are striving to introduce blogging to those who are still unaware of it. We’ve managed to get a few people to jump in on the bandwagon, but the numbers still wasn’t enough to push blogging into a growth spurt. We needed a medium that could reach out to a great audience. We needed the power of television.
Then the opportunity came…
A couple of weeks ago, the show “Mel and Joey” under the GMA7 TV network featured a short segment about earning money through blogging. Finally! A chance for blogging to be discovered by other Pinoys. Such an instance is a rarity in local media which is why everyone looked forward to watching the said show. [Watch the clip here]

Beauty is so Fleeting!
Every now and then, I see current pictures of old classmates. It’s interesting how the chubby ones then are now thin and the skinny ones then are now fat.
Reversal of fortune?
I remember this girl. When we were a lot younger, she was thin (like most everyone else that time). She was pretty, and she knew it. I remember her getting angry at a suitor one time because he gave her a gift that was creative but inexpensive, and definitely not the one that she specifically “requested”. He never really had a chance with her but she toyed with him nonetheless just to get freebies and an ego boost.
Oh well, she’s now fat. And not anymore pretty. She’s not even 30 yet but the beauty has faded. I wonder what that ex-suitor would think of her now.
