Not All Tabloids are Created Equal

Pardon me for my ignorance. I’m no reader of Philippine tabloids, especially since I rely on the internet for my daily dose of news. Gee, I don’t even rush to grab a copy of Inquirer Libre in the MRT! But as I’ve written in a previous post, I’ve been reading the tabloids these days for a research project. Here are some interesting things I’ve observed:

  • Not all tabloids have portions on sex. I know this because I read everything except that portion (I can choose what I read and I chose not to read those columns).
  • While it’s true that there are tabloids that fall under the stereotype description (superficial, useless, and trivial), there are modest tabloids. No portions on sex, and they’re really pang-masa versions of the broadsheets. The topic choice and language of articles are almost like 24 Oras or Bandila. In my opinion, the more decent tabloids are Abante, Tempo, Tanod, People’s Journal, and People’s Journal Tonight. I can even make my younger sisters read them!
