Ramblings of an Insomniac
Author’s note: My high school friends and I recently started a group SMS conference. One composes a message addressed to everybody and then sends it to the group list. It helps that all of us are Globe subscribers and we’re all subscribed to Unlitxt20. Haha. I just want to share these messages because, personally, I find it funny. But, of course, I wrote these! Haha!

Ehem.
Isa akong Professional tambay.

Absolute pardon: absolutely ridiculous?

We have followed the case for the past 6 years. The plunder case against the deposed President Estrada was not only monumental. More than ever, it is a test of the Philippine judicial system.
It not an easy case to handle even for the most distinguished men of the law. Yet the government prosecutors, who have the most honest and truthful intentions to show that they will be unperturbed despite the threats in their lives, chose to burn the midnight oil and vowed they would fight it to the hilt. Many advocacy groups saw through the process, and ensured that no one gets in the way for an honest trial. Last September 12, the Philippines literally stopped [for at least 10 minutes] just to watch or listen to the proclamation of the verdict. However, even before the government prosecutors could say they could rest their case, and take a much-needed holiday, here comes another issue to contend.
The god of realpolitik
The news this past week amuses me, in the sense that it appears that god (or at least, as interpreted by man) in all forms and religions has been too getting too many headlines in different parts of the world for different reasons — enough perhaps for atheists to take notice. And be amused as well.
In the West, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the highest official of the Church of England, held closed door negotiations with its US branch, the Episcopal Church. The point of contention: the Episcopal Church’s liberal stance with regards to homosexuality, and a moratorium on same-sex marriage and consecrating openly gay bishops.
Makes me wonder if the Anglican God has homophobia, despite all His might and power. We will see.
Erap’s dream of an Absolute Pardon
The things that pisses me off are these: (1) why would the government give Erap an absolute pardon when the court has already proclaimed his guilt and (2) assuming the government will give him an absolute pardon, why would Erap be allowed to give his own terms on his release?
Have you ever seen or heard of a convicted man giving the terms for his release? It’s like seeing the government bow down to this criminal and the message of this potential pardon is hugely damaging. Instead of sending out a warning to all corrupt officials and wannabe plunder offenders out there, the government is actually encouraging these shameless acts to continue because not only will the offenders be pardoned, they will also be able to enjoy the fruits of their dishonesty.
Erap will only accept the pardon if he will not be forced to admit his guilt and if his ‘wealth’ will remain his. This circus demeans the power of the verdict and it makes the court look like a big load of crap. After more than five years of trying to jail Erap for his corruption, the government itself wants this man free?!
I think the Arroyo administration wants to give him an absolute pardon so the people can go easy on PGMA regarding her ‘involvement’ in the now public scandal of ZTE Corp. and the NBN deal. This is damage control, believe me. And the Erap camp is well aware of it that’s why they have the tenacity to ask for so much in this case. Of course, who wouldn’t want to be friends with Erap now? I mean, the guy practically represents the masses and, unexpectedly, the opposition against PGMA’s camp.
If the government will give Erap a pardon, it’s like we’re all back to square one: back to zero in our fight against corruption. To even consider giving this man an absolute pardon is already stupid, but to even allow him to give his own terms for his release is just plain evil.

The 1.2-hectare Luneta Boardwalk Platform facing Manila Bay behind the Quirino Grandstand is currently a 24-hour beehive of activities as hundreds of construction workers strive to finish the first phase of Ocean Park Manila in time for the upcoming Christmas season.
As many Manilenyos know by now, Ocean Park Manila will be a state-of-the-art complex consisting of an oceanarium, a Marine Discovery Park, promenade areas, a boardwalk and a themed and landscaped pavilion. Swimming and snorkeling facilities for visitors are also included in the project.
The oceanarium, the park’s premier attraction, is designed as a unique and world-class educational and entertainment facility dedicated to showcase the rich and diverse marine life of the Philippine aquatic environment. It will boast a transparent acrylic-made tunnel to provide visitors the experience of walking underwater and viewing sea creatures.

Call me apathetic
I made the following comment on Torn And Frayed in Manila’s post, Erap: It never happened:
Nothing surprises me in Philippine politics anymore, torn. I think you should get used to it — in a morbid kind of way — like a coroner getting used to the dead.
and it irked a fellow named Cogs:
That’s the spirit, Jon boy! Show ‘em that nothing can tame that great Philippine apathy.
I wonder, have I really become apathetic?
It’s not the first time I was told that. A few years ago I had a few dates with a girl who was an activist, and a staunch believer of the Leftist movement.

The Incompetency of Meralco
This is actually a delayed post because the events that I’m going to tell happened a week ago. So why am I telling it NOW?
Perhaps just to let it all out in this blog. Perhaps to let everyone know in what ways Meralco can be so incompetent.
Three weeks ago, my dad called Meralco to report the “leaning” electrical post near our house. I’m not so good at gauging distances and angles (I’m no mathematician or engineer) but, if I may say so, I guess the post was leaning at an angle of 20-30 degrees and that’s a lot, folks (I know I should just have taken a photo and describing it would have been easier but I was being my forgetful self). And its weight is almost precariously supported by the frightening bundles of electrical cables attached to it. I know that it wasn’t like that before, since we’re one of the first occupants of the subdivision. But with the increase in the residents, Meralco must have just connected the wires and all with no plans whatsoever. Maintenance wasn’t even that good. So when my dad placed that call to Meralco to report it and nobody from the company showed up in a few days, it didn’t really surprise us at all. But we’re very, very disappointed.
And just imagine our dismay when finally, the folks from the company came, looked at it, and then said they’re going to just come back to repair it (they already received a report of something to repair. So, they just go check out if the caller wasn’t lying?). Knowing Meralco, that would definitely take more than a couple of days again. Why are they purposely delaying the repair? My dad said maybe because these are just subcontractors and wanted to earn more by extending the number of days spent for repairing a single electrical post. So, again, we waited, hoping that the post will hold on until the repairmen come back.
But that hope failed last Wednesday night.
