Actually, bukas pa ang birthday ko. The usual day for me. No cakes, party, no balloons(balloons?!!) for me. But its okay. I’d rather spend my birthday sleeping. The most memorable birthday I had was wayback 2003. I was turning 18 then. Because i was an activist, I don’t need a party at that time(’coz 18 years old is=debut); I’d prefer my parents to give me money. I spent my birthday hanging out with fellow tibaks(activists).
Hay, that was before. Now I don’t do that anymore. But still, my birthday is still usual day for me.
Hindi lang ako ang magbebertdey bukas. There are lots of people around the world who had the same birthday as mine. I think Kumander Nene of PBB and Avril Lavigne were also born on this date. But I had this friend of mine and we had the same birthday. Only I can’t be with him on this day to celebrate.
When I first met Maine, I really thought he was a cool and great guy. Like me before, he was also an activist. We get to see each other often, and he taught me and my comrades some lessons in life, and especially in love. That’s why we called him Joe D’ Mango.
Well, years passed, and because of busy schedules, we seldom get to see each other. Until I decided to study again, I heared no news about him. Then i heared from my former comrades that he is very sick. I didn’t know the illness that struck him; until May 2007, a friend, Paola texted me;
“Gurl, just wanna inform u na pumanaw na c maine knina 4am..”
I was shocked. I just can’t believe it. All along I thought it was just a plain sickness. I immediately arranged my schedules and after three day I went to Maine’s house in Bantay, Ilocos Sur.
It was raining hard when I arrived. There young boys and girls together with their parents were looking at the casket. I learned that they’re Maine’s students from a college in Vigan. He was a professor bfore he died. His fellow faculty was also there. I looked at the casket later; and there memories flashed back unto me. Though I didn’t cry, I felt really sad about what happened. Maine died of Colon Cancer. And he fought with it.
Because of school, I wasn’t able to attend to his funeral. Until now I am still sad; but somehow there’s somewhere in my mind and in my heart that he’s still alive.
Well Maine, I missed you a lot.
And Happy Birthday, man.
