A Visit from the Dead
I remember this dream that I had a long time ago (actually just right after my grandma passed away). In this dream I was with my grandma. She was wearing a long fluffy night gown. I said fluffy because I could actually feel it rubbing against my bare knees. Yes, the two of us were dancing. The feeling that I had while we were dancing was elation. It was like being hugged by so many people at the same time and floating on clouds. The feeling was actually so real that (when I woke up), I realized that I was almost in tears. After a few moments of staring into blank space, I remembered that prior to that encounter with my grandma, I dialled this certain number on our telephone. Immediately, I got up and reached for the phone. I dialled the number and of course I got a signal which meant that the number is unrecognizable. However, the feeling that I had was just so real that it managed to make me try and dial that number even though in my mind I knew that nothing would happen. In fact this dream was almost like a vision that I actually even remembered the number that I dialled. Normally, I would forget the whole dream let alone little details.

The City That is Manila
Whenever ageing senators realize their chances for getting reelected appear predictably nil, or are about to fully exhaust their allowable number of terms as legislators, somehow the idea of becoming the next mayor of Manila suddenly becomes enticing.
What’s the motivating factor at play here? After all, Manila is supposedly nothing more than a cacophony of images depicting chaos, stink, litter, corruption, and apathetic blight. In short, a has been. A city that lived its better days eons ago.
Yet, Ernie Maceda made a run for it only to lose pathetically. Ping Lacson launched a similar intention with great media fanfare but soon withdrew (after God supposedly told him to remain in the Senate). The current mayor, Alfredo Lim, already served as Manila’s mayor prior to winning a senatorial post.

A different perspective
I read the Sunday Times newspaper on Singapore’s re-employment law while I was aboard SilkAir on 23rd September 2007 going to Singapore for an official trip. Singapore really takes good care of the elderly, to ensure that they have savings in their retirement years. For my one-week stay at Carlton Hotel, news focus more on workers’ welfare, on health issues and discussions about money – on Central Provident Fund (CPF) savings rather than politics.
In my observations, most janitorial jobs, waitresses and ordinary workers in some hotels and restaurants are mostly elderly except those professionals. When I read the Straight Times the following day, there is a new law which will take effect on Jan 1, 2012 where employers are required to re-employ workers reaching the age of 62, to work up to age 65, and eventually up to age 67. I thought it was already the practice because some restaurants and hotels have older employees. Old workers have an existing maximum workfare income supplement (WIS) of S$100 per month. To encourage their workers to work longer, the maximum WIS will be increased to S$150 for workers aged above 55 to 60, and to S$200 for those above age 60.
Pogs and an object lesson on power

LAST Saturday, I had to motor to the city center to attend two meetings, one with the University of Nueva Caceres General Alumni Association (UNCGAA) headed by Engr. Elmer Francisco, and a personal mission — to buy my kids additional pogs.
My task would have been infinitely easier if Hong’s — that popular store along Calle Caceres where chinese-made goods can be had for sometimes obscenely low prices that will probably make Alex Lacson (of the Twelve Little Things fame) unhappy — still carried pogs with a diameter of more or less two inches. Unfortunately, when I inquired, what they had are the ones twice bigger.
So I ended up scouring practically the entire CBD, and that on a limping rheumatic right foot. From Hong’s, I went to Novo, another similar store beside Aristocrat Hotel, went through Divisoria Mall beneath the Bichara Complex, and then Master Square: but all for naught. At Master, I chanced on Erning Elcamel and family buying school supplies; “sa mga bangketa, igwa kayan,” Mrs. Elcamel said when I told them of my quest.

The Philippine reproductive health policy: a loosely guarded secret?
My daughter CJ will turn three this December, and increasingly, the most usual question that people pop when we talk about kids is “wala pa bang kasunod yan?” I usually laugh it off, but sometimes it becomes irritating when the questions grow in number. I mean, sometimes the way the question is asked almost sounds like insinuating the lack of sexual activity.So for the record, yes, my wife and I have a wonderful sex life. I wonder if knowing that will make them happy. 
Of course I digress.
When they prod further, I usually just say that “birth control works”, but what I fail to say is that our chosen birth control method is courtesy of the government. And we got it for a very low cost.
Yes — the government actually has an effective birth control policy, at least for our case. But it’s a loosely guarded secret.
When You Miss the Signs

Jollibee Kiddie Party
That Jollibee mascot was the most unwholesome I’ve seen. Oh well, what can you expect when you’re in Tondo? The guy was doing macho dancer moves and was constantly humping and kissing the birthday boy’s father. Ah, entertainment for the kids and the adults as well!
