UAAP Season 70 – 5th Showdown – DLSU defeats ADMU
The final showdown for UAAP Season 70 between ADMU (Ateneo de Manila University) and DLSU (De La Salle University) was concluded last sunday where DLSU emerged victorious.
Game Synopsis
It was a great game because both teams are fighting for their dear life. The team who loses will automatically get third place while the winner will face off with UE for the championship. For the first three quarters, the battle was very close. DLSU would take a four to five point lead at some time but ADMU would always bounce back. However, in the fourth quarter, DLSU started to get away from ADMU through the heroics of Pocholo “Pochy” Villanueva. He made several big shots that shattered ADMU’s hopes in winning a championship this season.
There was a time where DLSU only had a five point lead and the ball was in Chris Tiu’s hands. Knowing that Chris Tiu is ADMU’s three point specialist, DLSU guarded him like hell that he was forced to pass the ball to Baclao standing beyond the arc. Baclao shot the ball and it went in. The ADMU crowd went wild and I was hoping that it won’t be a dejavu of the last game since the situation is very similar (DLSU leading then ADMU rallies to win the game) However, Pocholo made a side jumper and Casio sank his free throws that erased ADMU’s hope for a comeback. In the end, DLSU wins over ADMU and will go on to fight UE for the championship! Go go Lasalle! Pochy power!
Tech News and a Movie review: Atma Xplorer
For some reason I am yet to find, the movie title has been changed to Rouge Assassin in Asia, which as I found out later in the film, is a rather literal description of the story, while it retains it’s original name elsewhere in the world. Anyway, the choice was between Resident Evil: Extinction and War. I opted for War so as not to traumatize my girlfriend with another bout of my horror-fanboyism.

Of Racists and Slurs
(crossposted from my blog)
I don’t know why people get so offended over matters that concern “race.” In anthropology (I’m an anthropologist by training), “race” is no longer used: the tripartite classification of “Negroid,” “Caucasoid” and “Mongoloid” are, for all intents and purposes, obsolete. The concept of “race” is more political: it is a means of establishing identity by skin color, common ancestry, and physical features.
With all the Al Sharptons, Claire Daneses and Don Imuses of this world, it sometimes becomes bothering that every remark that’s made at “another race” always has to be construed as “offensive.” I was bloghopping today when I read all these Filipino blogs saying that Teri Hatcher of “Desperate Housewives” was “racist.” In the show, her character Susan Mayer remarked, “OK, so before we go further, can I check those diplomas? ‘Coz I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines.”
Surely, we Filipinos have had it up to here with being synonyms for “househelp” and for having Hollywood actresses like Claire Danes complain that the Philippines is full of cockroaches and reek of the smell of unwashed feet. But “racist?” I don’t think so.
Another Perspective on the Latest ‘Racial Slur’ Issue
Perhaps, unlike many people I had a different reaction when I watched the clip of the Desperate Housewives where Teri Hatcher’s character said this:
“Okay, before going further, can I check these diplomas ‘coz I would just like to make sure that they’re not from some med school in the Philippines.” [watch the clip from MindyTV]
Pardon me for my relative insensitivity, but I did agree that she had to check out those diplomas as a precautionary measure alright.

Experience a Button-Free World at DontClick.It
Everyday we move and navigate through the virtual spaces of the internet through the use of our mouse. We guide our pointers over links and we move from one page to another through a click of a button.

“Within this interface you wont find any buttons. Instead you navigate the contents in a different way. You will get the hang of it immediately.”
The concept may seem crazy, but it is way cooler than lamelessly clicking buttons with your index finger.
Anti-Filipino Slur on Desperate Housewives?
Many Filipinos were offended by what seemed like a racial slur uttered by Teri Hatcher’s Desperate Housewives character, Susan Mayer when she went to see a gynecologist. In that particular scene, Susan objected to being checked by the OB-GYN and stated that she “wanted to make sure that those diplomas are not from some med school in the Philippines.”
Whoa! The line connotes negativity and distrust on medical schools here in the Philippines. Is it racial? Is it directed against Filipinos in general? Or is it directed at the medical educational system in the country? Should we react violently right away and call for boycotts of the show?
The slur can obviously be very offensive and the writers obviously may not have done their homework by researching on the quality of education that our medical educational institutions have. Perhaps it was an error in judgment on the writer’s part for directly relating the numbers of Filipino medical practitioners in the United States to the quality of education offered by Philippine medical institutions?
Video: Women Talk About Their Breasts
Had there been any women who has been 100% happy with what they’ve got? Or do women view their breasts as too big, too saggy, too pert, too fat, too full, too far apart, too close together, too A cup, too lopsided, too uneven, too jiggly, too pale, too padded, too pointy, too pendulous, or just two pair of smalls? Or should we be blame it all at false advertising?
Desperate Housewives’ Rather Insulting Remark about Medical Schools in the Philippines
I got an email from Rob Klaproth this morning that points to a scene in a recent episode of well-known TV show Desperate Housewives, which he and his Filipino boyfriend found offensive and racist.
In this particular scene, Susan Mayer Delfino, played by actress Teri Hatcher, is talking with her doctor, which, I presume, is her OB-Gyne. She then tells him this line which marked the spot:
Okay, before we go any further, can I check those diplomas? Coz I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines.
You can listen to the 56-second MP3 of the dialogue that Rob sent me, which I uploaded on my Multiply.

What’s up in the world of Technology:
Microsoft Launches it’s own online Applications to compete with Google Apps. The project is called Office Live Worksheet BETA. A mouth full yes, but it’s worth looking at I think.
Next, I asked yesterday, What’s a Sony Drive?
No it’s not a Hard drive. It’s something MUCH MUCH cooler.
Then there’s the product of Anime and Technology. It’s something inspired by Detective Conan, a technology that seems to come straight out of science fiction (daw!). An Ultra thin Computer Memory Chip that was first intended to copy Edogawa Conan’s glasses. o.O The japanese are weird but their technology just gets weirder by the day >_
