After the Trillanes standoff

November 30, 2007

I am reserving further expression of my opinions on today’s standoff between Sen. Trillanes and around 30 renegade soldiers and gov’t. soldiers at Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati. In the meantime, here are links to the Inquirer.net online coverage of the mutiny.Sonus refers everyone to pictures from SunnySideUp! A website supportive of the coup attempt is online while Stuart-Santiago, Uniffors, and the Philippine Experience liveblogged the military adventure.

Gibbs Cadiz gives an account of his close brush to having lunch with the Magdalo rebels while Philippines Without Borders finds humor Trillanes and co’s stunt:

It was so stupid of them to initiate a “coup” in the first place. You want a coup and you launch in a hotel?! My goodness! Such incompetent fools!

…You want a real revolution? Learn from the lessons of Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro, Joseph Broz Tito, Garibaldi, and Michael Collins. These guys launched it in the real battlefield; not in five star hotels. Mao said a revolution is no picnic and he succeeded.

But Trillanes and Lim would rather have their revolution in the comfort of a hotel. And when they started to feel the discomfort of a tear gas, they chickened out. Funny guys!

Introducing my other half

November 30, 2007

I grabbed this tag from Andrea.

His Name. Christopher. So plain. So common I know. In fact, about millions of other men in this country alone bear the same name. Needless to say, although the name is ordinary, the man that carries it isn’t.

Cry, my Beloved Country

November 30, 2007

In the last 24 hours, the 2nd most e-mailed article at the International Herald Tribune’s website is the news about yesterday’s incident, Philippine police quell mutiny at a luxury hotel. Carlos H. Conde’s article ends with this line:

Coup attempts and mutinies are not unusual in the Philippines, which has seen more than a dozen since the ouster of President Ferdinand Marcos in 1986.

Bad, bad, bad publicity for our country. Although I grew up witnessing local coup attempts and mutinies in the news, I don’t think they’re usual (”not unusual”).

Notes for the 30th of November

November 30, 2007

bonifacio_katipunan.jpgToday marks the birth of Andres Bonifacio, revolutionary leader and founder of the Katipunan which led the Filipino movement against Spanish colonialism in waning years of the 19th Century.

Bonifacio envisioned a Philippine society free from the yolk of Spanish colonial rule. A hundred years hence, the demands raised by the late plebeian supremo against repression and inequality continues to be relevant.

In spite of the semblance of democratic trappings, the country remains in a seemingly insoluble and permanent crisis.

No where is this more pronounced than in the Trillanes standoff at Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati yesterday - an event which came after a series of corruption scandals that rocked the Arroyo administration, the subsequent Makati and Batasan bombings, and the release of a United Nations final report pointing to the armed forces as the culprits behind the killings of leftwing civil society leaders.

But where were we before the recent quagmire?

Religion and politics

November 30, 2007

How do we explain the people’s fanatical participation in new religious formations? Why are evangelical leaders enjoying high popularity these days? It’s not enough to describe the religious nature of Filipinos. The revival of interest in religion has something to do with the dislocations of the Philippine economy in the past decades.

A truly wonderful day for all
The boy Trillanes was under trial for a coup attempt
Everyone remembers the stand-off at the mall

Trillanes decided it was no fun
Several of his friends agreed, they be so sweet
Together they left the Hall of Justice
To march freely along the Makati streets

    Trillanes takes over Manila Peninsula

    November 29, 2007

Huwaaat!!??? Trillanes is on his way over here? I said aloud as I read the security advisory that our company has sent out.

Suddenly the floor was abuzz. Something was happening. It happened so fast. Spontaneous was not the term to descibe it. I am inclined to believe it was planned.

It was scary to be trapped in a building so near Manila Peninsula where all the commotion was ongoing. It was hard to tell which was scarier, to stay put and remain at risk in case the situation got worse, or to go out and try to leave the area at the same time exposing yourself to danger.

Trillanes, Lim and other oppositionists holed in Makati Peninsula

    November 29, 2007

Posted as of 12:06 pm on GMA News, is this another Oakwood? Not really because according to former VP Teofisto Guingona, “this is the new Edsa, the new People Power”. Sen. Trillanes and Brig. Gen. Danny Lim will be rearrested for sure after walking out of their trial at the Makati City RTC and, along with their allies, may be subjected to sedition charges.

As of now, The Presidential Security Group (PSG) has barricaded the Palace, the AFP is on red alert and the area around the Makati Peninsula is swarmed with foot soldiers and 4 tanks. Everyone is obviously tensed. I mean, who wouldn’t? What new government was Brig. Gen. Lim saying in his statement, a junta, coup d’etat? Several of Trillanes’ soldier allies have arrived at the Makati Peninsula wearing an ‘I’ on their sleeves. Something is definitely up and this isn’t something the Palace can just toss aside.

Trackback Spam - Something to be aware of

    November 29, 2007

    Beware of trackback spam.

This is my warning to everyone but first, what is a trackback? Trackbacks are like a notification that somebody linked to your page. Here is an example of a trackback. Joiz’s post linked to my post, HostTracker - Free website monitoring service, so a trackback was created.

    Example of a trackback image

It makes me happy knowing that somebody mentioned me in their posts. It can also add traffic to your blog since their visitors might click that link to your blog. However, nowadays, trackbacks are being used by spammers for their own benefit.

I sell books.. Just another unemployed.

    November 29, 2007

I sell books.. Just another unemployed.

I’m tired of selling books that’s why I quit. Uttered words by a stranger whom I once chat with the other night…

I once strolled around Ayala and I felt hungry so I went to PansitPalabok stand and yes, just the kind of food I can afford aside from it’s my favorite. Anyway, I saw this guy alone trying to finish his stuffs so sensing that this guy needs a companion and someone to talk with I joined him. Well of course, guys can just blend any time any where but mind you I can’t blend with ladies that easily.

How did I know that he needs a company by then? Well some HR is good at body language therefore, I can tell.   Moreover, I’m not also discounting the fact that we’re a bit confident as compared to girls so we can just talk to anyone at anytime. I also validated that this guy wanted someone to talk with because he opened up first like where I’m presently connected since I’m wearing my uniform at that time hence, the conversation begin.

    Think Before You Sign

    November 29, 2007

I found a blank signature sheet on my desk yesterday. It was from a student organization that asked the faculty for help in their signature campaign. I thought it would be a good idea if I’d be the first to sign. But I didn’t, and it’s not because of apathy. The petition was for (1) an increase in the budget and (2) genuine educational reform through legislation. Sounds nice, eh?
Yes, but good will isn’t enough.

Frankly, I found the petition vague. It’s basically blank. No further explanation included except the short description that stated the two points mentioned above and the info that our signatures will be presented to Congress. What assumptions did the form have on its potential signatories? It’s either we’re psychic (we know the concrete action they want to take) or we’re stupid (we just sign without reason).

    Language and power relations

    November 29, 2007

ali-adidas.jpgI was supposed to repost this article for a good friend yesterday if not for my forgetfulness - I failed to remember which periodical I originally read it from. But here, I found it again:

Sellers and buyers: Language and power relations

    By Juan Luis Conde
    Inquirer
Last updated 01:33am (Mla time) 11/25/2007

Power relations are present when at least two people meet, according to Juan Luis Conde, a Spanish philologist. The relationship may be between a parent and a child, a man and a woman, or an employer and an employee. It can be among friends or members of a group.

Conde says language mediates between power and subordination. Power, he says, is an imbalance, which can be obvious as in a master-slave relationship, or subtle when the subordinate is unaware of his or her position of disadvantage.

In the relationship, one of the parties imposes on the other party a particular interpretation of the world and uses it to his or her advantage.

Conde looks into this kind of relationship between employers and employees, doctors and patients, and sellers and buyers in a paper on “Power and Power Relations.”

For lack of space, “Talk of the Town” is featuring only the relationship between sellers and buyers—how sellers use advertising to make certain brands espouse a viewpoint, and tell buyers what is right and wrong and what is desirable and undesirable. In short, advertising that thinks for the consumer so that he or she will buy the product.

The Journey Back Into The Woods

    November 28, 2007

Everybody everywhere has at one point in their formative years been fed with the tainted idea that all step-sisters, most especially step-mothers, are sickeningly conniving and brutally wicked, thanks to fairy tales. That and princes would ultimately have to leave their kingdoms in search for their one true love because of either of the following:

  • The nobles are the only “fair” people in the “land” mainly because everyone else do not have the right nor the luxury at vanity;
  • Princes can not just marry local princesses because that would be plain incestuous and immoral, albeit tempting, or that local princesses unrelated to them up to the third degree of consanguinity have long been swept off their feet by other princes from other kingdoms; or
  • Their kingdoms are completely worthless. They know so because they obey a crowned Queen who does not have an ounce of charisma, covers for the serious misdeeds of an obese King, making her more loathed than hated, and whose inkling at giving attention to decrees that are of distastefully mediocre importance make her citizens smirk in shame when word gets to other kingdoms. The prince thus takes it upon himself to leave his people, using only his charm and nobility to win maidens from distant territory whose kingdoms are less chaotic and where he can also get paid at 4x a prince’s daily wage. Thus is the sweet reward of migration, the modern term for the more common old statement that went “in search for his one true love in a land far, far away.”

Are you more capable than your boss?

    November 28, 2007

Are you more capable than your boss?

Worst, you even wanted to acquire your superior’s post knowing that you’re more capable of him/her? If I’m not mistaken you’ve already belittled his/her competence in front of your friends during those times when you were drunk or perhaps backstabbed her that often once career related conversations erupted. This is so unethical and if possible please refrain this.

You know what? Sometimes we think this way when our boss’s started to flood us with deliverables not found in our job description that to some extent he wants us to create reports beyond our imagination.

Moreover, there were also some instances that you need to extend long hours just to provide him/her the report he/she needs that leads us to sacrifice our scheduled dates. Maturity and leadership has also been an issue to the extent that you don’t know were you’re department is heading. These are just the common outcry of a newly hired employee or even to those who’s been with the company for 2-3 yrs. These are but normal if you’re an employee and expect the worst once you’re in there.
