Can’t Wait to See “The Golden Compass”

The Golden Compass

I can hardly wait to see the movie, The Golden Compass. It is based on the first of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy novels. Back in August, Ruel De Vera wrote a review on the trilogy in the Inquirer. In his review, entitled Don’t be afraid of the ‘Dark’, he said that the trilogy “may be ripe for discovery by readers who have witnessed the end of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series.”

Although I am a fan of make-believe worlds and realms, this is not the main reason why I’m excited to see the movie. The reason why I want to see the movie is that some Catholic leaders have started a campaign to boycott the movie which will be released on December 7, 2007. According to them, Pullman’s objective is to bash Christianity and promote atheism. And although anti-religious sentiments are not so obvious in the movie, religious conservatives are afraid that unsuspecting viewers might be tricked into buying Pullman’s books (available at National Bookstore), which have been called “Atheism for Kids”… Click here and continue reading…

Flight Attendant Galore!

We recently posted an entry on local flight attendants and the pre-take off announcements. They were fun to read and would be fun to experience, but some of them were just bloopers. Now what if that boring intercom announcement was revitalized and rehashed so that it will catch the attention of all passengers?

That would be really fun and passengers would most likely pay more attention to every little detail. Every little detail including their own fashion sense!

Here’s a video taken by a passenger on a fight to Chicago. Don’t mind the video, as you will only see the aircraft’s left wing and the runway. Instead, pay attention to the flight attendant giving out the instructions. The audio is a bit off though and the FA talks as if there’s a time limit. In any case, it still is fun to listen to! If you’re having trouble listening to what the FA (we think he’s gay and cute :p) is saying, don’t fret as we have transcribed the text and placed it below the video. Welcome aboard!

On the shrinking Philippine middle class

Notwithstanding all the political noise now reverberating around President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the Peso surged to 43.85/$1 last Tuesday. In the past two days, the momentum was sustained as the Peso closed at 43.675 to $1 on Wednesday.

According to news reports, this is the strongest level hit by the peso since reaching 43.59:$1 on July 5, 2000. (Inquirer) Incidentally, this should be another propaganda boost for the fledging Arroyo government.

The pardon may have bought her time to deflect offensives against her on account of the bribery and ZTE corruption issues and reorganize her ranks, but all is not smooth sailing for the rest of her term even after having driven former President Estrada away from attempts to destabilize her administration.

Citing a study entitled “Trends and Characteristics of the Middle-Income Class in the Philippines: Is it Expanding or Shrinking?” presented during the recent National Statistical Conference by statisticians which include the secretary-general of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), the blog Philippines Without Borders presents us a disturbing development:

Do not expect too much of the end of the (Arroyo) regime

I don’t think it would be an exaggeration to say that many are outraged by the pardon of the disgraced former president Estrada by President Arroyo.

For veterans and sympathizers of Edsa 2 – particularly those from the middle classes – the recent action of the present administration is an unpardonable act that followed a long chain of controversies that rocked it anew.

Interestingly, a huge chunk of this sector, Manuel Quezon III remarks in the blog entry A gathering storm, “was willing to tolerate many things about the administration, so long as it maintained the appearance of being marginally more virtuous than the Estrada administration.”

GMA’s pardon of Estrada jolted the sense of these sectors as the feeling of being had is suddenly sinking in. Questions as to the very rationale of GMA’s ascendancy to power in 2001 – the issue of corruption that led to his ouster – are now being asked.

Remembering MGB’s Undas Special

When I was a child, my whole family would cram in front of the t.v. to watch horror flicks or scary t.v. segments the entire day during November 1 and 2. Particularly, we all love Magandang Gabi Bayan’s Undas Specials. As a child, I was automatically driven to sit beside my mom the whole show because I was afraid my kuya would scare the hell out of me. Plus, our t.v. room had 6 big windows in it’s entire right wall so every time the show would queue it’s grave cries and shrieks, I would literally cover my head and stay away from the windows.

It’s just too bad that Noli de Castro had to be our VP and leave such an award winning show. It sucks to have Korina Sanchez or Katherine de Castro do ABS-CBN spook segments because they don’t look like they’re really into those sort of topics. Korina Sanchez, for me, is annoying to watch on Rated K much more see her do a spook segment in her show. I guess it’s her overrated way of looking ‘goody-goody’ on t.v. or being too overstyled for her age. Why not let Alex Santos and/or Julius Babao do these segments for a change? Im sure they’ll do a much better job than these ladies. Come to think of it, why not have Ricky Carandang do spook segments for ANC? Haha, now that’ll be interesting.
