Not Only in the Movies: A Real Life Encounter with Amnesia

“Since when have you been studying in Ateneo?”

I was visibly confused. I couldn’t believe what my friend just said. In the past she was the one asking me how school is! She’d even be keen on knowing what subjects I take since we’re in the same field.

I haven’t been in touch with her for the past three months. Her phone was out of reach. Although I thought that she must have lost her phone, I suspected that she was in the hospital again. Then out of the blue, she texted that we have lunch, as usual.

Finally, she explained her memory loss in the middle of our meal. Her illness caused her to be confined once more. This time she had to undergo a treatment that had amnesia as a side effect. Now I thought that happened only onscreen, not in the comfort and confines of real life. “So when you woke up after the treatment, you didn’t remember who you are?” I asked.
She giggled and said that she knew who she is. What she doesn’t remember are recent memories, those before her treatment.

Later, I realized that “recent” could span 10 years.
