Years ago, there were only a couple of ice cream brands and names that you would see sold in Metro Manila. I only knew Magnolia, Presto, McDonald’s softserve and then there was dirty ice cream (ice cream sold by street vendors). Now you have all sorts of names, brands and flavors. Some establishments even specialize in making and selling this frozen treat.

Today, I had an enlightening bout with mild depression. I asked the question, Why is it that despite the many blessings I am enjoying, I was still feeling low? I searched for answers and my introductory lessons in Economics in High School gave me three: 1) the meaning of Economics; 2) Abraham Maslow’s Theory of Hierarchy of Needs; and 3) The Law of Diminishing Marginal Utility.
Define Economics
According to the Encyclopedia of Business, Economics is a
body of knowledge or study that discusses how a society tries to solve the human problems of unlimited wants and scarce resources. Back when I was a teenager, I was surprised to know that humans face the problem of unlimited wants. I didn’t know that we have unlimited wants. But according to social scientists, it’s true.

New Recruitment Strategies By Companies?
Yesterday, I was at the clinic with a patient when I received a phone call. The guy (who’s using a smart cellphone number) who called asked if I’d be interested to join in their company’s expansion program as a health consultant. I didn’t answer to that and asked him how he got my number and if somebody referred me to him. He said he got it from some “headhunter” that he couldn’t even recall the name (oh great, you’re trying to recruit someone and you don’t even want to remember people who referred that person to you. What about character references? Does he know about that?).
I asked him what company he’s working for. Then he answered me by saying words vaguely and were almost gibberish by the sound of it (he doesn’t even have a good accent trying to speak in English, which gave me the impression that he’s already memorized this part about his company and have been well-rehearsed to be able to say it very fast so I wouldn’t be able to catch what he exactly said). He only slowed down in talking when he was saying some buzzwords like “expansion”, “multinational company”, “compensation”, and “Stanford University” (oh, was he trying to impress me with the name? No, he didn’t. By the way he said “Stanford University”, I was only more convinced that there’s something fishy going on) and when he shifted to Filipino and asked, “Ano po ba ang specialization ninyo? (What’s your specialization?)”.
I decided to give him a little spin.

Isolated case?
Telling the whole world that the case of Mariannet is an isolated case is clearly irresponsible a statement and an oversight of the glaring truths that the government itself has known. In fact, the government is merely talking about one side of the coin. Are people in Malacañang not even aware of the real stories behind death because of poverty—especially among children? Definitely, they are not aware of how it means to be poor and hungry!
The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) has issued a press release in its website, openly admitting and declaring that children account for the largest poor population in 2003. The press release said that 14.1 million children are poor in 2000, and 13.5 million in 2003. The sector is also the third poorest sector with a poverty incidence of 42.5% in 2000, and 38.8% in 2003.
In real numbers, we are talking about 13,469,849 poor children. In Region XI alone, where Marianett lives, there are 737,496 poor children, which have increased by 78,421 from CY2000 to 2003.

You’re only worth 15 seconds of a recruiter’s time. Can you believe that? How terrible isn’t it? But for all you know it’s a fact. No recruiter spends too much time on reviewing your resume once you apply to him or her. How about in the call center for sure my resume is worth their time. That I doubt. Due to shortage of supply plus an average of 7% turn over in this type of industry I doubt if they’ll go over with your resume. They’ll just call you directly (reviewing your resume for 15 sec) conduct a caned type of interview and your good to go if you pass. Read more here..

Bloggers react to 12-year-old child’s suicide

Reading the depressing tale of 12-year-old Mariannet Amper’s suicide and lamentation for her family’s poverty in a diary earlier this week made me sad, knowing how it has come to illustrate the degree of desperation of our people and the general sense of hopelessness now pervading the archipelago.
Many of our Church leaders have expressed concern over the story with one Bishop Eliezer Pascua of the National Council of Churches of the Philippines asking, “We have called them ‘poor’ and ‘eyesores’ but what do you call a society which made them like this?”
The militant Left immediately saw this as another issue against the government. At the same time, opinion columns and news commentaries were busy linking the child’s family’s poverty to the continuing brouhaha over the source of the Palace cash bribes.
Not much differs in the blogosphere where an increasing number of bloggers have shared reactions on Mariannet’s death by suicide.
