Freaky Happening in India

A 27-year-old woman and her 60-year-old uncle visited a temple. A group of men said something obscene to the woman while in the temple. The woman and her uncle then boarded a bus that had more than 50 passengers. Two of the men boarded the bus while two rode a motorcycle to follow the bus. The men then dragged the woman out of the bus, made her board another bus, then gang-raped her.

Her Choice Killed Her

Last November 2, a young girl of 12 looped a thin rope around her pretty, fragile neck and hanged herself inside their makeshift home. It was said that she did this out of desperation that she and her family will be stay in the muddy pools of poverty forever. But this despairing child also had her dreams: a new bike, new shoes, jobs for her mother and father, and to be back in school. She wrote these in her diary. Was she able to write down her thoughts of ending her life as well?

A lot have already expressed their sympathies for this girl and her family. It was said that she and her sad story have put a face on poverty. Or maybe, more importantly, it has given us the intermittent jolt that we need to be reminded that we aren’t all comfortable and well-nourished. Some also said that this story of Mariannet should make us remember the lies that our government officials feed us. But then, even if our government lie to us, steal from us, cheat on us, it is also important that we, ourselves, should try to contribute to building our society and help our brothers in need.

While that most have blamed poverty and corruption in the government as the killers of Mariannet and the thousands of Mariannets all over the country, I think we may have been setting aside something that is equally important that we should address immediately: mental health in children and how the society views it.

The Impeachment Rat Race

After Pulido and Atty. Tamano of UNO, another group of hopefuls have filed another impeachment complaint against PGMA. They say it’s better and more detailed and is properly endorsed unlike the first two. Former Vice President Teofisto Guingona Jr, militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), human rights group Karapatan, church people and human rights victims filed the case at the office of the House Secretary-General Roberto Nazareno dreaming the almost impossible dream of ousting Her Highness. But then again, in a democratic country, be it even a pseudo one such as ours, one is free to believe in whatever fantasy they want just to protect themselves from further headache.

Let’s be realistic, shall we?

In a year, only one impeachment case can be filed against the President or any public official. And for that honor, we had Atty. Pulido finish first in the race. The problem with Pulido’s case is that (according to the opposition and a number of lawyers and human rights people) it is weak and it doesn’t contain any relevant or strong points to prove PGMA’s guilt in bribery, corruption and public misdealings. The adminstration filled House of Representatives made sure to pass Pulido’s ‘weak’ complaint to shield PGMA from a stronger impeachment case. Now that’s smart but it’s like selling your soul to the devil. And to thank the lower house, the Palace gave ‘tokens’ of their appreciation in the form of P500,000 slipped inside paper bags to look like they were giveaways from a party. The 190 Congressmen who were handed these bags didn’t even budge to oppose the unlawful presents, well except for some who stood their ground.

“Intangible assets – How much is it really worth?

“Intangible assets – How much is it really worth?

Organizational entry isn’t just about finding the right person at the right time for the right job. It is also about keeping the right person. But how can we keep such valuable asset amidst the growing industries that promises to offer a fun place to work with plus perks together with extremely high starting rate? This is just one of those deep-seated questions being thrown now days by HR executives in every round table brainstorming there is. This has been one of the reasons why thinkers such us J. Collins & Porras adopted “built to last concept”, R.M Kanter urged executives to become “change masters” & Welch embraced “boundaryless” organization initiated with an open-book strategy just to encourage innovation and creativity to better position their respective organizations. To borrow one CEO’s statement “Take away my assets and leave my people.” This is one proof of how valuable these intangibles are to every organization striving to keep its pace in the new emerging economy.

Decades ago applicants use to offer commitment, loyalty, trust & conformity to our standards but sudden paradigm shift has emerge that lead to employers approaching talents offering them career path, security, training & development and benefits of which other industries could not match. This is the reason why I’m encouraging young job seekers alike to be a “company of their own” just to keep abreast with the demands of the new economy as discussed on my previous article. This is a good opportunity rather to better equip themselves with the necessary tools & competencies before exploiting the new global mindset of every recruiter and employer i.e. blitzkriegs. Job seekers should never rely too much of what their institution has offered them for things they taught us are mostly outdated proven by emerging practices in the new business arena. You should be responsible of your growth as discussed on my previous article. On one hand, this has been the reason why some multinationals or even local companies resorted to strategic collaborations with known institutions for strategic advantage. Some global corporations have even built their own institution and pooled the best professors at large just to help them breed new emotionally intelligent leaders – Hybrid performers. If you belong to these types of organization then so what if you’ll jump-ship. But still, they’ll bleed in silent and morn for the loss such talent for along with it was an enormous amount of tacit knowledge of which we can’t write nor explain. This led me to embrace the fundamentals of knowledge management before your think tank’s runs dry. Now, are you scared? Is your company still willing to push the game plan with your clear and concise operating system together with your ambitious or measurable goals? Then I would suggest you check your talent management program if it could counter your future knowledge management initiatives. Read more..

Stereotyping: How I hate young recruiters from the BPO Industry!

Stereotyping: How I hate young recruiters from the BPO Industry!

A critique to young recruiters in the BPO Industry.

I just can’t imagine why they’re so fun of stereotyping applicants. If not from schools then from what type of industry you’ve learned stuffs. Is this the kind of training they got form their respective organizations? Are these the one’s being taught to them by their immediate heads on how to get quality and promising applicants? Is this a proven technique as to acquire quality hires?

Young as they are there’s still plenty of lessons still to be learned. I just hoped that they’d realize this early that sometimes real talents are concealed in rough surfaces. It takes a fine craftsman to mold a masterpiece and time to test its determination. You’ll never know that those résumé’s your dumping is gold and right before you knew it they’ve already made your competitor a great company to work with earning enormous profits. Another scenario is how one guy who was thrown out by his own company of which he co-founded. Ironic right? Latter he built his own company of which his former company acquired and right then he was back on board. And who is this guy then? Steve Jobs of Apple himself. You know who’s responsible for iPhone’s wide acceptance though for a fact that it’s still to be released by AT&T come last week of June. Gold’s are buried beneath the surface so you should exert more effort and give them a fair treatment for you to identify future great performers.

“Passion to make a Difference – an HR Cebu Story”

“Passion to make a Difference – an HR Cebu Story”

This has been inspired by a simple yet profound conversation I had with Elena Maramba an aspiring HR professional braced by a recent initiative by HR Philippines spearheaded by Jing Ureta of Marbel University together with it’s ever supportive core team. HR Philippines was the source of my desire to found HR Cebu and sell it to HR Philippines as a regional group with the recognition of HRD Gateway. Passion indeed could make you surmount the insurmountable.

It’s because of passion that we ignite and habit to keep us going. This has been a lesson learned from my previous readings on various blog’s and forums that I used to park and scoop around latest news about technology and potential big ideas. Some of which are potential googler’s in the making who are in the constant lookout for potential VC’s and angels for them to sell their big ideas. Passion indeed could make you fathom the unfathomable. Read more..

Work, My Future and That Advice

Introduction

I think this is one of those few times I’m blogging about my working life. Frankly, it doesn’t bother me how many people from my office reads my blog. Although at first, it was kind of a little embarrassing when you suddenly caught someone reading your blog or they comment to you personally about what you just blogged.

Work: In an Unenthusiastic Employee’s View

Like school, work is the same. You go to work to spend 8 hours sitting in front of the computer doing your so-called “job.” This so-called “job” includes a lot of stages. There are pre-work, real work and post-work stages. Let me explain these stages of work.
