The Impeachment Rat Race

After Pulido and Atty. Tamano of UNO, another group of hopefuls have filed another impeachment complaint against PGMA. They say it’s better and more detailed and is properly endorsed unlike the first two. Former Vice President Teofisto Guingona Jr, militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), human rights group Karapatan, church people and human rights victims filed the case at the office of the House Secretary-General Roberto Nazareno dreaming the almost impossible dream of ousting Her Highness. But then again, in a democratic country, be it even a pseudo one such as ours, one is free to believe in whatever fantasy they want just to protect themselves from further headache.
Let’s be realistic, shall we?
In a year, only one impeachment case can be filed against the President or any public official. And for that honor, we had Atty. Pulido finish first in the race. The problem with Pulido’s case is that (according to the opposition and a number of lawyers and human rights people) it is weak and it doesn’t contain any relevant or strong points to prove PGMA’s guilt in bribery, corruption and public misdealings. The adminstration filled House of Representatives made sure to pass Pulido’s ‘weak’ complaint to shield PGMA from a stronger impeachment case. Now that’s smart but it’s like selling your soul to the devil. And to thank the lower house, the Palace gave ‘tokens’ of their appreciation in the form of P500,000 slipped inside paper bags to look like they were giveaways from a party. The 190 Congressmen who were handed these bags didn’t even budge to oppose the unlawful presents, well except for some who stood their ground.
