Not another book wishlist?

Yes it’s another one. Thus the cycle continues. I get at least one book that I wished for in my last wishlist and then cook up another set.

Of course the last one still applies and I’m just waiting for some extra cash to be able to purchase them from the local bookstores.

So this time, I’m making a list of books that can’t be found in the local bookstores. A real wishlist! (Much thanks to Danny Reviews!) Here it goes:

images.jpgMario Vargas Llosa’s Conversation in the Cathedral:

Conversation in the Cathedral is a novel about power and politics in Peru in the early 1950s. Two of the characters meet in a cheap eating house (the “cathedral” of the title) and spend the afternoon talking about the past. The novel is basically encapsulated within their conversation, although we are only occasionally reminded of that (by interjections) and some events accessible only to the omniscient narrator are also included…

10 Questions I (Really) Want Answered

10 Questions I (Really) Want Answered

I’ve always wondered about a lot of things and why or how they happen. Especially when I’m alone, the mood to become an over thinker consumes me with so much energy that often I become too paranoid and crazy. It helps that my family are a bunch of conspiracy theorists and pseudo omnipotent political analysts-slash-talent scouts who never stop yapping about the world, their views and how to drown those worries away by watching Iron Chef.

10. Why do Pinoys think sex when they hear the sax opening on (Wham) George Michael’s Careless Whisper? Admit it, a steamy bed scene ensues in your head whenever you hear this song. Nevermind that this song isn’t really about sex but almost everyone I know would either blush or say “It’s sexy time!” almost instantly. Because the sax opens the song, people tend to forget about the lyrics and concentrate more on it’s perceived sensuality.

9. Why do we love cooking shows? I love Iron Chef to bits, especially the Japanese version because their chairman is much more energetic and anime-ish. Food is no doubt a basic necessity so it’s no wonder we even bother to watch or buy cooking stuff. But my fascination with cooking shows is beyond their entertainment and ‘necessity’ value: I love it primarily because it’s about food (duh) and it allows me to see myself as a chef. Not that I’ve always wanted to be one but it’s more of a woman thing; that perception of being a good wife entails being good in the kitchen. The perception is a bit out dated but as I come from a traditional Pinoy family, this holds true for me. I know how to cook but only the basic stuff (frying, adobo, chopsuey and nilagang whatever) and I would love to enroll in short baking and cooking courses in the future…if my schedule permits.

Philippine Passport Online Application

http://digifotoblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/side_salad.jpg” title=”side_salad.jpg”>http://digifotoblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/side_salad.jpg” alt=”side_salad.jpg” />I sent an email to this website and a certain Mr. Bryan Zarzuela replied to me promtply and amazingly he answered all my questions.  Don’t you feel good when you inquired to a blog or website and you received a prompt reply?

The reason why I sent an email to this website is that my Philippine passport (anyway, I only have Philippine Passport hahaha) is running out of pages.  I think I only have two pages left though the expiration is on 2009.

Okay let me summarize the information that I got from Mr. Zarzuela so the OFW’s out there can benefit on this.

Date night

Remember when you were single and dating? Friday and Saturday nights were sacred back then. It meant your boss cannot make you put in overtime no matter how much she begged, or it meant you had to display extremely good behavior so your mom will allow you to stay out later than usual.

Now that you are married with kids to boot, are those nights still sacred?

Woe to those who say no. Getting married and not having kids do not mean you have to forget about being young and in love.

My husband and I agreed that we will always have our date night. It doesn’t have to be a Friday or a Saturday actually. It doesn’t have to mean going out and spending money on a movie or meal. It could simply be spending some quality time together, even at home curled up together on the sofa watching TV Patrol World.

Flies in my Superbowl of China

The metro is abound with Chinese food-serving establishments. You cannot turn a corner without encountering a restaurant or a canteen that serves chinese cuisine in one form or another. Because it has always been a constant part of our lives, I choose to stay away from it whenever I go and have dinner out. It also helps because my husband doesn’t like to eat Chinese.

The rare times that we do have the urge to eat Chinese, we always look for a place that serve dishes that would excite our palates and not dampen it. This is the reason we choose places like Big Buddha, Super Bowl of China, Zong at the Fort or North Park. These places also encourage more of the younger generation to appreciate Chinese dishes. Because of the popularity of yang chow fried rice, lemon chicken, deep fried cuttlefish in spicy salt, manchurian calamares, and string beans with minced pork, these places have flourished over the years.

That is why it is really disappointing for me to have such an unpleasant experience at Superbowl of China at the SM Megamall megastrip branch. The place itself looked unkempt and felt dirty. The air was filled with the smell of smoke coming from the kitchen which made me think that the place had inadequate ventilation. The set plates, flatware, and glasses appeared grimy. I kept wiping everything with tissue until I felt comfortable enough to use them.

On Work and Procrastination

The good thing about this kind of job I have is that I work for myself and I have all the time to do all the work and promotion of my products. It’s good because (1) I really don’t like being bossed around. (I think I am born to be the leader, not the follower. Heh, but I can follow, of course, if I want to and have to.) (2) I’m a total home buddy that I don’t like leaving the house that much. (3) I can’t leave my computer for some reasons. (4) I feel like working in an office, in whatever workplace, or even just as a home-based worker, is like being imprisoned or something.

With all these reasons, some of you may think that I don’t like pressure, responsibility, compromising etc. Well, that’s sort of true. For me, that’s so troublesome that I just want to leave things behind and just doodle on the fun things I do. Yeah, you can call me a quitter, coward and other names if you want. This is me and I know what I’m doing. Read the rest of this entry »

Pinoy Big Brother? Just another effective marketing strategy..

Pinoy Big Brother? Just another effective marketing strategy..

This article maybe late but still worth the read knowing that I been wanting to write this short article for months now but I could not find time to reflect on this topic since I’ve got backlogs to attend to.

PBB has been a sensation to all of us since its first edition. Up until now you can still notice various articles related to PBB circulated by known bloggers in the country to date from critiques, rhetoric’s and personal opinions as to how PBB affects our lives.

So what made PBB so successful when they first launched the program? Let me highlight some theories as to how we are glued to this hot program. Aside from being a “kapamilya” you might consider this opinion.

Ambulance Effect. This has been highlighted by some behaviorist of our times that played a very vital role in marketing campaigns. Ambulance effect is when we already know that an accident or somehow related to it had happen still we Filipinos can’t help ourselves to get closer to the unpleasant incident. I don’t know why or is it we wanted to help or we wanted to be present on such undesired incident?

Kerygma Conference Live

We just came from Philsports Arena (formerly ULTRA) where we attended the very first Kerygma Conference conducted by the Light of Jesus Family of Bo Sanchez. In the few hours that we were there, we were inspired by the sharings of Fr. Orbos who celebrated the opening mass, the performance of very powerful performers like Nolyn Cabahug and Dulce, and the Bo’s talk on his 7 beliefs. Read more at Pinoy Seminars.
