Edubuntu for the Philippine ACES

December 29, 2007

Let’s go talk about the Philippines and the spread of GNU/Linux in this, as PGMA calls it - 2nd World Country.

“A Computer for Every School” or ACES is a government project aiming to put at least one (1) computer in every school in the Philippines. But with the budget limited, they are now considering using GNU/Linux instead, with that, I strongly recommend using Edubuntu.

MPAA Violating the GPL License?

December 29, 2007

The Motion Picture Association of America or MPAA has been forced to stop distributing its “University Toolkit” online. Many are familiar with MPAA as they are in the forefront of Anti-Piracy campaigns especially via BitTorrent and related sites. But people are claiming the MPAA violated the GPL License with their University Toolkit….

Getting my Adsense earnings at Western Union

December 28, 2007

Its a Merry Christmas indeed for me today as I finally got my Google Adsense earnings at Western Union.

I reached the $100 limit before the end of November so I was actually expecting a payout from Google. But when I reviewed the Adsense payout schedule, I calculated that I would be getting my money around the middle of January. That would be if I opted to be paid via standard check.

Here Comes the Rat

December 28, 2007

Shakira and Love in the time of Cholera

December 28, 2007

marqllosa460.jpgAfter Ang Lee’s espionage thriller Se, Jei, the film adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s celebrated novel is another movie I’d like to see – Love in the time of Cholera by the esteemed author, who more often than not looks like one of the Mario brothers of my childhood years. I haven’t read the book yet and I still don’t know when it’d be shown here in the Philippine shores.

In the meantime, Inquirer entertainment columnist Ruben Nepales shares an interview of the pop music Shakira, who was asked by Marquez, a fellow Columbian, to write songs for the film:

2007: The Year of Philippine Blog Events and Controversies

December 28, 2007

I think everyone will agree with me when I say that the year 2007 has been a year of blog events for the Philippine blogosphere. Being a blogging newbie that I was, this has also been the year when I started going to offline blog events and meeting other bloggers in the flesh. In a sense, my blogging world expanded and I realized that there’s more to blogging than just being able to write my thoughts online (and yeah, of course, there’s blog traffic rush too).

And since bloggers being humans really, we tend to form our little communities, both online and offline. With formation of such communities, it is expected that there will be some skirmishes here and there, some bouts of misunderstanding, and a little argument everytime somebody talks about a debatable issue. It could be particularly energy draining, having to sustain your sanity in such hair-splitting situations, especially when people are getting so pumped up with emotions. But then, again, things like these are expected to occur and I think it’s healthy. We just have to go through it like rational beings that we are. Learn, grow, and most importantly, to remember to actually have fun (it’s what we always forget, I think, being so immersed in the complicated web of things).

It would be nice to look back at such memorable events, both online and offline. I have compiled some of the blog events of the year and the controversies that had been playing in the blogosphere (if I do forget an event or a controversy, just leave a comment and I’ll add it up! I won’t pretend that I’ve been to every blog event because I haven’t. Hehe):

BLOG EVENTS OF 2007

  1. Blog Parteeh! 2007 - is purportedly the largest Philippine blogger meet-up ever. It was held last January 27 in the afternoon at Classica Tower 2 condominium poolside in Makati. Must be a 150+ bloggers who attended and it’s actually the first blog event that I went to (so I was a blogger event virgin then, haha). I won a Bubbagump GC back then, which is still a Bubbagump GC now. And I remember being mildly surprised that Benj (that was Benj, right?) didn’t actually have slash wounds on his arm and that Jester really does wear a jester hat. Haha.
  2. The 2007 Philippine Blog Awards night - this was held last March 31 and the first ever in Philippine blogging history. It was really a fun night, though I regret not having gone to the after party (damn hospital duties!). This event also has its share of controversies. More on this later.
  3. iBlog3 - It was the 3rd Philippine blogging summit held at the School of Economics Auditorium in U.P. Diliman last April 13-14. Speakers were the popular, experienced bloggers of the country who talked about blogging ethics, niche blogging, politics, photoblogging, and more. I wasn’t able to go, though, because of my damn back pain. Now, I’m just looking forward to attending iBlog4, if there will be one.
  4. Taste Asia Blogger Food Fest I - This was held last July 3 at Taste Asia in SM Mall of Asia. There were about 160+ happily fed bloggers then who got crazy with the chocolate fountain and the cliquebooth, hehe (and lots of beer too!). And this event taught me to always bring my calling cards because one just never know when a raffle is going to be held. Or rather, I’m just forgetful even when constantly reminded to bring something because there’ll be a raffle. Haha. And who would forget the Virgin Bloggers’ Circle? My Top Posts in 2007

December 28, 2007

So the year’s almost ending and I’m just beginning to get the hang out of blogging regularly again after my nth leave of absence. Let’s see, this year alone, I abandoned my blog at least twice, then changed my mind, then got tired of blogging, then went back to blogging regularly. And somewhere along the road, I managed to put out a couple of articles for TMB that I’m somewhat proud of. And by that I mean none of these articles will get me banned from churches, malls, and hospitals.

Factors such as originality, public reaction, and whether I was naked or not while writing them were taking into account into ranking said posts.

So anyway, without further ado here’s the list. I hope you enjoy reading some of them as I have writing them. Happy New Year everyone!

Articles I’m most proud of in descending order.

  1. Lips of an Agent
  2. Teri Hatcher Speaks Up!
  3. Honeyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!
  4. 50 Reasons Why Sesame Street Sucks!
  5. Job Hunt
  6. A day in the life of TMB
  7. Filipino Driver Aptitude Test
  8. It’s Hard Being a Cannibal
  9. HAIKU!

Browse your entire domain and blogsite offline

December 28, 2007

Besides from having a complete local backup of your entire domain and blogsite, you can also browse your own domain site and blog pages without internet, that is offline from your hard disk alone.

Here’s HTTrack.

The Quest for Blue Hair

December 28, 2007

After years of people hearing me say that I wanted to dye my hair blue, I finally did it!

Right now, I have blue hair. Obviously, blue is not my natural hair color. It came from a bottle, or more like a packet of dye.

Talk and Text Piso Kada Minuto

December 27, 2007

Hi guys. I heard from a radio commercial that Talk and Text has a new promo called Gaan Talk Piso Kada Minuto (i’m not sure of the exact words).  Just write CALL15 {space}  TNT number you wish to register and send to 2942.  Example, CALL15 09181431434. When registered, you dial *1431+11-digit registered number.  You have 15 minutes call which you can consume in stagger within 24 hours.  This is similar to Touch Mobile’s Tawag 15/15.  Enjoy talking…..

P.S.  I’m not an employee of either telco. Just want to share information to all. I haven’t tried the promo yet since I’m not using Talk and Text.

Dr. Stuart Kaplan A Leading Skin Expert for Skin Aging Treatment

December 27, 2007

Dr. Stuart Kaplan, a renowned Beverly Hills Dermatologist, and creator of kaplanMD, has identified 3 types of skin aging caused by Time, Hormonal Imbalances, and Environmental Damage

Most skincare products focus only on anti-aging and environmental protection. Yet many skin symptoms are in fact the direct result of hormonal imbalances, specifically, estrogen loss.

Studies show that men and women begin experiencing hormonal imbalances at each transition in our life. Staring in our late 20’s, hormonal imbalances cause skin aging different from symptoms caused by chronological or environmental damage alone. Dr. Kaplan is the first to identify the 3 types of skin aging, as well as the 12 skin symptoms associated with hormonal imbalances.

How Christmas means to bloggers

December 27, 2007

I know this holiday season lots of get togethers, unwrapping of gift presents, crash diets, and non-stop drinkings are going-on left and right.

But let us not forget it’s THE BIRTH OF THE GOOD OL’ MAN ABOVE why we’re all celebrating this joyous occasion. I’m not trying to single out the Christians. It doesn’t really matter what you believe in or religion you’re into. Everyone is absolutely welcome to our big parteh!!

Here’s what some Filipinos in the blogosphere have to say on Christmas. How about yours?

On Fitting Rooms

December 27, 2007

I hate fitting rooms. It’s not really the happiest of experiences when you try to put on the, um, “hippest” clothes, only to find out in dismay that the clothes look horrible on you. And you’d have somebody waiting outside the dressing room, waiting for you to show them how you look.

You cower in one corner, begging to not show them how you look like. Then you’d get a stern voice coming from outside the dressing room, saying “Gerard Adrian, if you don’t come out here this very moment, I’ll leave you alone in the dressing room. And have that serpent-man who lives in the bowels of the mall come up there and eat you. And I’ll throw in a tear gas grenade in there as well. Just get the fuck out!”

A few tearful tantrum-filled minutes later, you would hesitantly open the dressing room door, in the shittiest clothes ever, and you’d find about twenty people (mostly women) staring at you and stifling their laughter because you’re dressed like a Mexican.

Yeah, I have like the shittiest childhood ever. Fuck you.

Reverse New Year’s Resolution

December 27, 2007

Ang New Year’s resolution ko ay hindi na ako gagawa pa ng anumang new year’s resolution.

*****

One of the things that I look forward to every time January 1 draws closer is the new year’s resolutions list. While I do wonder why people would wait for one long year in order to re-wire their lives, I don’t have other qualms in writing my own. Hey, it won’t hurt to follow this tradition and I don’t think anyone has ever died writing one (except perhaps if that person’s resolved to kill himself, but that’s another story).

Of course, I am well aware that this list is like a Philippine ballot form - it is not always counted and followed.

Garlic Mashed Potatoes

December 26, 2007

I would not call potatoes as the Philippines staple but I can say that it is very popular. Almost everyone loves french fries, others prefer the healthier baked potato, or mashed potatoes which come as side dish to most fast food dishes.

My mom has done mashed potato in several different variations. I myself have done a bit of experimentation on this popular dish and would like to share how I do my yummy garlic mashed potatoes.

Vacation and an uncured obsession for books

December 26, 2007

“I have given up reading books. I find it takes my mind off myself.”
- Oscar Levant

To enjoy the holiday season more, I amassed some books for reading to pass my time. I also came up with a book wishlist (of which some of the titles can be seen above) and transferred my online list of books to LibraryThing, which are all found in akolibro.blogspot.com.

Christmas Curse

December 25, 2007

tianak by Reinard P. SantosEvery year, December 24th is my favorite time of the year, apart from my birthday and New Year’s Day, while Christmas is the most traumatic, most chaotic day for me. While everyone is busy buying gifts for their inaanak and pamangkin two to three weeks before the 25th, my whole family is going nuts just planning where we’ll spend Christmas up until the 27th. This family ‘tradition’ of going off somewhere on Christmas started just a couple of years back when  my sister and I realized the sort of stress my mom goes through every year when my dad’s tianak-like inaanaks and pamangkins come to invade our house.

 Before

When we were kids, my mom and my dad never peddled us to our Ninongs and Ninangs or even to our Lolos and Lolas to have Pamasko. We never had to ‘beg’ or make pa-cute for money and gifts because as my mom always put it,

“Don’t ask other people for things your dad and I can give you.”
