Pinoy Big Brother, US Elections and 2010

celebbigwinner010508.jpgI don’t usually watch Pinoy Big Brother. On the other hand, my girlfriend Beryl told me that she only watches its first and last show.

Last night was the show’s Big Night where the program’s big winner will be announced from among four survivors. I wanted to see it for myself for a change but I still wasn’t able to.

Last night’s episode, Beryl told me, started with a Broadway-type jazz themed dance number with the show’s hosts and some celebrities and ended with the announcement of Davao City comedian Ruben Gonzaga as the Big Winner.

This had my father lamenting over the wrong prediction of the Cebuano paper which he administers as managing editor. One of SuperBalita’s entertainment columnist previously wrote that Riza Santos, the Fil-Canadian beauty queen, will win.

A NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

The students of Sacred Heart Academy of Novaliches, one among the oldest school within the Zabarte Almar area in Novaliches, successfully held its Christmas presentation last December. The students were the ones who basically produced, directed and organized the event entitled: “A NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS”. Despite meager resources, it was the students, who basically did all the work. It was them who inspired us to produce a low budget production to document the event. CONGRATULATIONS to Mathew P. Luga, President of the Athletic Club, one of those who initiated the project and to all   the students who organized the event including the teachers who helped them.

Look up, look far, look beyond

Look up!

When I was a kid, I learned to pay respect by extending my hand to hold the person’s hand and knocking that hand on my forehead while bowing. In my culture, the gesture is called “bisa” in Bikol  or “mano” in Tagalog. It is customary to bow and say “po” to the elders.

Bowing in many cultures is a sign of respect to elders. Then, colonialism bastarded the meaning of bowing as submission and sign of inferiority, regardless of age. So it was common sight to see local elders bowing to young foreign colonizers. Another notion on bowing is that it is being connected to humility (I am no worthy, plus bow! as popularized in a certain movie). It is exemplified when one is praised for doing excellently (magaling or maorag in Bikol), and usually that person will bow and denounce the praise as untrue (hindi naman o tsamba lang). I say this is not humility, nor respect. If we truly respect our skills, ourselves, and capabilities, we will not bow; instead we will look up and say, “thank you.” That is humility. That is respect.
