While the old The Economist article’s title is actually a play on Marie Antoinette’s famous saying “let them eat cake,” why can’t our own government here think of something like the following government literacy program in Chile?

ASK Chileans what they are reading and the answer will probably be Isabel Allende’s “La Suma de los Días”, a memoir by their country’s best-known living writer. If, that is, they read anything at all: in a recent survey, 45% said they never read books and 34% did so only occasionally.

Remedies and Preventions

Lo and behold, the President recently disclosed the fact that she knew all along about the allegations of corruption in the ZTE-NBN deal even before the signing was cancelled, and way before Jun Lozada, the younger De Venecia and Romulo Neri spilled the beans. But for some reason, GMA did not reveal who gave her the tip, only stating that she took steps to cancel the deal with the Chinese firm five months after she got hold of the information. And so the deal was cancelled and we now have a nation boiling over the anomalous deed of some traitors to the democracy. The magnitude of GMA’s revelation is a force to be reckoned by Abalos at the least, if not by her ‘implicated’ husband at the most. Not even a sanctimonious “burjer” can now provide nourishment to the anorexic denials of the crooks behind the ZTE scandal.
