An Unbelievably Stupefying Encounter
February 26, 2008
The other day, I was instructed by my client to hire two girls who could be my home based virtual assistants so I immediately dug up a collection of resumes’ in my inbox and started scanning through each one of them. One of the applicants held a special spot in my heart because she was recommended by a very dear friend. Besides, this girl’s CV reflected call center experience which is of utmost importance to me.
After picking up a handful of prospective interviewees, I started sending out messages to each one of them, the girl being on my personal “priority list”.
After about fifteen minutes, she went online and I went ahead with the interview process.
Little did I know that the interview will be a major mishap and a comedy of horrors of some sort, something that I unwillingly subjected myself into and an incident that taught me the biggest corporate lesson of my life…

The Trend of Being Good [ramble]
February 26, 2008
During the late 2007, people may have heard frequent news of people bringing back large sums of money and documents that are pretty valuable than your life and schmoes that are too stupid to leave them behind.
My mom and I joked that it was more of an ‘it thing’. Is it really the trend of doing good? Or is it really the trend of people being stupid and sensible people being ultimately annoyed by it?
I believe it all amounts to everything that’s happened around us. The growing awareness of the oppressed against the oppressor and the realizing that the real evil is more in the smarter people than in the incapable people.
You know what I’m getting at.
It turned out to be a joke. The people who fought for their own independence and truth were being cheated on their own backs. Gawdness. Â

Yahoo acquired by Microsoft?
February 26, 2008
Early this month Microsoft proposed a 42- billion-dollar acquisition of Yahoo, a classic case of a buyer overbidding to blow any potential competitors out of the water said James Owers, a Georgia State University professor of corporate finance. Suprisingly, I found this while exploring Flickr, a popular online photo management and sharing application acquired by Yahoo almost 3 years ago, in search for the best online gallery solution. Holy smoke, what does Office Live gallery ad doin’ in Flickr?

Moral Bankruptcy
February 26, 2008

A flag refusing to be raised up the pole, a hymn abandoned by the music, and confettis reluctant to fall on a defiled shrine. For the believers in tragedy and superstition, these are just three things that cast a swelling reminder that the commemoration of the EDSA revolution right smack where history was cemented about two decades ago must be a signal from the heavens. It is nothing short of a testimony to the prostitution of the spirit of EDSA, one which is grotesquely subservient and a flattery to the lapdogs of GMA both at the same time, or much less an anorexic parody to one of the cornerstones of history. But for less trivial people who are doubtful of tragedy and superstition, the moral bankruptcy in the present administration can never be associated with these three things for whatever that they may symbolize. Even more so, the moral bankruptcy in the present administration is nowhere near the EDSA celebrations yesterday. It is, quite frankly and by all means, in the Palace.

Cecilia Cheung Scandal
February 26, 2008
Just when you thought everyone was innocent, a sex scandal would pop from nowhere. It’s unfortunate that one of the victim on this latest sex scandal is my longtime crush, Cecilia Cheung. Apparently, these scandalous photos were taken by Edison Chen in 2005, stored on a laptop, and “stolen” by the people who repaired the laptop.

PEOPLE POWER or POWER PLAY?
February 25, 2008
The 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution freed us from a dictator. The 2nd People Power put pressure on Erap to resign. And after that chaos; back to square one.
When the 2nd People Power (PP) was in place, I was still preoccupied with my college crush that I didn’t give a damn on what’s happening in the political arena of this country. At that time, current events were mainly used as bonus points in quizzes and long exams for my Social Science II (SocsciII) class. To me, things like that were boring.Â
Then came Machiavelli’s The Prince.
My SocsciII Prof would read excerpts from the book and ask us if we disagreed or not. He never explained anything, elaborated on any of the discourses because they were plain and easy to understand. The thing that interested me was that the book presented precise ways of maintaining, gaining and expanding power. Too interested in fact that I bought a copy for myself and thus launched my habit of rummaging through my sister’s Philo, Socsci, Polsci and Anthropology books from when she was a B.A. Philo from UPD.
Virtu. Fortuna. Necessita. The three essentials for a prince to govern lies in his ability to redirect others to his own advantage, to manipulate resources and to have the opportunity to access power. In our current situation, PGMA has these three in her sleeves and it sustains her in her seat. To be honest, I do not understand how she does it or why she has them but one thing’s for sure: she’s got great connections. And her dogs? I do not know whether to call them suckers or idiots or her equals for greed.

Indios Can Become ProBloggers Too
February 25, 2008
Indio. This was a name given to us by the Spanish colonists long ago to remind us of our inferiority to their race. It was used as an insult and of mockery that suggests that we are nothing more but ignorant savages.
For 300 years we have endured this maltreatment from our oppressors. But instead of getting discouraged, their name-calling fueled our determination to rise up and prove them wrong. This eventually gave birth to the Filipino passion of showing the world that we can do anything in spite of what other people say.

Learning from EDSA
February 25, 2008
Pete Lacaba’s article “The Name Game†reprinted in his blog talks about names inspired by the first EDSA uprising, the First Quarter Storm and the Martial Law era.
I’m mentioning this since today is the 22nd anniversary of the first EDSA and for the reason that my own name, along with the names some persons from my own generation who I know, also have roots from that era.
So moving on to the main matter: What is to be done when our representatives fail? The answer to this question is the threat of another “People Power†uprising, Manuel Quezon III writes in his column. But there are those, as cited in Quezon’s blog, who are against this. Onomatopoeia, in particular, reproduced “A Call to Stop the Threat of People Power.â€
