Half Cup Less - Philippine Rice Shortage

March 31, 2008

As of the moment, in disbelief I wondered how did this happen? I’m hearing about a rice shortage? My goodness. The Philippines is a rice eating country. Although we don’t export rice, the Philippines is considered one of the biggest rice producers in the world. And it is so ironic that the people now are advised to eat half of the rice they used to eat, which is, a bad thing. Considering Philippines supposedly has an agricultural economic set-up. Our lands are fertile and we have farmers. Maybe it is the price we pay for

Standards of Degrees & Diplomas Hit a Monumental Low: PISAY.

March 31, 2008

This incident has made quite a fuss in the Pisay community because the batch also vouched for the “diligence” of the above mentioned graduate, which was honored because apparently, the person graduated and acquired a diploma. Ironically, the diploma itself states that it certifies that the person, whose name is indicated therein, has COMPLIED WITH ALL THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE COURSE/INSTITUTION awarding the certificate. I don’t think a 5.0 in Math actually qualifies as compliance to all requirements.

I’d rather not indulge myself in ranting about how unfair it feels or appears to all other alumni of all branches of Pisay, needless to say, I’m quite disappointed that the respected authorities  …. (continue reading from the original post … Click HERE…)

sequence of chromosome variation

March 31, 2008

Was it that the legacy of some expansions that has been demonstrated in other studies which looked at the genetics of mideastern and northern africana populations. Their signs of recent europa of places to the region are more unusual.

Don’t why I read it, but this bbc news stuff on science was one of my random browsing.

The study focused on the Y, or male, chromosome, a package of material carried only by men that is passed down from father to son more or less unchanged, just like a surname. But over many generations, the chromosome accumulates small changes, or copying errors, in its DNA sequence. These can be used to classify male chromosomes into different groups (called haplogroups) which, to some extent, reflect a person’s geographical ancestry.
The scientist team analysed the Y chromosomes of 926 Lebanese males and found that patterns of male genetic variation in Lebanon fell more along religious lines than along geographical lines.  I also came upon ira, of the ira joxbido internet browsing. Which goes to say that I stray from my original browsing further and further. I ended up watching some tv shows of mundane proportions.

160-Year Old Oslob Church Gutted by Fire

March 30, 2008

Horrors of horrors, that was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw a local paper’s front page last Thursday. It carried the news of the destruction of one of Cebu’s oldest churches. The 160-year old Immaculate Conception Parish and its convent in the southern town of Oslob was gutted by fire.

Food Crisis

March 30, 2008

Last night, I was fortunate enough to catch BBC’s World Debate on food crisis. The  panelists were some of THE authority in finance, agriculture, economics, and politics plus a farmer who wanted his side to be heard. The debate was intense but substantiated what causes the world wide crisis in food and how to potentially solve it.

Essentially, agriculture is being neglected. Most countries tend to put huge amounts of money on everything else except on agriculture. There is but little investment or help given to the farmers and they end up losing. They practically put in more capital than what they could earn because as prices go up, so do farming equipments like fertilizers and seedlings and poultry needs like feeds etc. Plus, they are also in competition with huge commercial farmers and imported products. They are forced to sell their goods at a much lower price just so they could earn a living. Most of these farmers do not even own their lands. The government is much too focused on other issues like politics, technological advancement or even urbanization and globalization. There is too much emphasis on globalization that the most basic of needs is being side swept: food. As more and more people go to the city, the demands for meat, rice and vegetable are increasing more than the farmers could handle. Some farmers, because of meager earnings and neglect from the government, tend to go to the city and look for jobs instead.
