The Spratlys Anomaly and Gloria Arroyo

Get this: $2 billion of loan per year, until 2010. This is China’s grant to Gloria Arroyo for letting them through the Spratlys door. I won’t be surprised if China begins to drill the Spratlys for oil and gas reserves the soonest time possible, precisely because they have Gloria’s approval. But what about the other nations competing for territorial rights to the Spratlys/Kalayaan Islands? Apparently, Vietnam also had to butt-in with the deal between China and the Philippines. As for the other nations, we can’t tell for certain other than they will not be pleased by Gloria’s decision. As for us, Filipinos, we have this:

We get to pay the loans from China while they explore our lands, or seas, while Arroyo has enough funds until her claim to the presidency ends in 2010, until the national elections are set to begin. Ricky Carandang calls it “treason”, and I share the same view. But more than just being treason, it’s prostitution of the land, of national sovereignty.
