San Mig LightDISCLAIMER: I am not the person who habitually drinks alcoholic substances. This is applicable to the Philippines.

The Misconception

I bet most of you knew that the sale or offer to sell to minors of all alcoholic beverages, including beer, to minors is illegal. But after doing some intensive research about the matter, I found out that most of the commercially-available beer beverages in the country are not illegal for sale to minors.

PD 1619 Says…

According to the Presidential Decree No. 1619 Section 6 signed by Former President Ferdinand E. Marcos:

The sale of, and offer to sell, to minors of liquors or beverages containing an alcoholic content of thirty per centum or above (60 proof or above) is hereby prohibited and shall be punishable by imprisonment ranging from six months and one day to four years and a fine ranging from six hundred to four thousand pesos.

Research

As far as I know, one per centum is equal to one percent alcohol volume. So comparing it to my compiled list of researched percent alcohol volume of San Miguel Products available in the country, all of them are below the set limits. Here’s my list:

Beer (reference) % Alcohol Volume
Red Horse (Extra Strong)Beer 7.00
San Miguel Pale Pilsen 5.00
San Miguel Blue Ice Beer 5.00
San Miguel Non-Alcoholic Beer 0.00
San Miguel Strong Ice Beer 5.00
San Mig Light 5.00
San Miguel Super Dry Beer 5.00

Conclusion

None exceeded 30, right? So what does that mean? Is it legal to minors? Uhm, as far as I understand it the answer is YES. :D (I’m not sure, okay) May it be a YES or a NO, just remember to drink moderately. :D

Mango Madness vs. Mango Torte

Because of the Filipinos’ love for food and all things delicious, dining establishments have appeared left and right. Many go to culinary schools and chefs are this year’s celebrities. Bake fairs have become a popular event in malls and bazaars. With all these variations in cooks, chefs, and dishes, you are bound to come across those that meet your fancy or those that fail your standards. It is the same with mango-inspired cakes and desserts.

Simmer

Whenever I see Lozada on t.v. these days, I cannot help but feel slightly annoyed at his pseudo superstar status. The hype surrounding him is just too crippling, too indulgent. I think it’s unnecessary to give him this much attention; I mean like giving him movie offers, touring colleges and universities and treating him like he’s the standard bearer of the opposition. It’s scares the hell out of me to think that this man is soaring too high for us to critically observe him.

I do not object to his testimony; for all we know, he’s helping heaps to pin PGMA and her cronies down for corruption. Personally, I believe him. Even if he and Joey lack the hard evidence to prove their claims, I would still believe them than the government’s smug-ass cover-ups. In our politics, it’s either your PRO or your ANTI PGMA. You cannot sit in between and be quiet: you have to decide which side your taking or else you’ll be caught dead and STUPID.

But unfortunately, politics in this country doesn’t have any distinct line between good and evil, right and wrong. The line isn’t even blurred; heck, there’s no line to speak of actually. It’s all about the classic cliche of LESSER EVIL and EVIL, of moderating evil and not eliminating it. The overall color scheme of politics in this country is gray, dirty gray to be exact. You cannot distinguish any side unless you tolerate and acknowledge that evil must co-exist with good in one freaking party.

Worst Place for Women

Â

Today March 8 is International Women’s Day. In spite of real progress around the globe, the bedrock problems that have dogged women for centuries remain.

Putting power in women’s hands is the biggest challenge for improving their lives in every country, advocates agree. Whether in the poorest countries of Africa, or the most repressive of the Middle East or Asia, lack of control over their own destinies blights women’s lives from early childhood.

International Women’s Day 2008

Today is International Women’s Day 2008. Today is a global day of recognition and celebration across developed and developing countries alike. Everywhere in the world today, organizations and governments observe IWD on March 8 by holding large-scale events that honour women’s advancement.

Our office has celebrated IWD since 2006. This year, our theme again focused on women’s achievements. Despite the numerous guests speakers in our event from whom I learned a lot, I will only passionately write about the three inspiring Filipina women who have stirred my deepest emotions.

How Sick

Warren and I were riding the jeep on our way to Quiapo yesterday when we got stuck in a melee of rallyists calling for the resignation of Gloria Arroyo along Espana. I used to get excited when I see such crowds, well, that was ages ago, when I was still an immature young girl who thought that rebellion was always the answer to every problem.

Anyway, as the jeepney practically crawled its way through the crowd of protesters, Warren and I took pictures which upped our observing skills several notches higher. It wasn’t difficult to notice that several jeepneys had children as young as 0 to 12 as passsengers, several of whom were sporting Gabriela rally t-shirts.
