Tama Na Kay Janina, Yung Ibang TAF Ten Naman!

By now you all should have seen the video (and its numerous remixes) of the interview answer of Binibining Pilipinas World 2008 Janina San Miguel. Her answer in the Q&A segment of the show has made her an international household name. But what you might have missed out on are the answers of the other candidates in the TAF TEN! Watching the videos of the other contestants answering the judges questions has made me think that these girls may just have proven beauty pageant detractors that these contests are not really all about brains.

We have to understand that these girls, even though they are not as viral as Janina has become, have to be given the limelight too. Because after all, they are also important persons in my life! Thank you!

So here are the transcripts and the videos of the answers of some of the finalists:

whale on the plate

Japan steps up efforts to end the 19-year moratorium on commercial whaling imposed by the International Whaling Commission (IWC), its seafood-loving citizens are less and less enthusiastic about tucking into the catch. As a result, trade inventories of the tough, gamy meat have climbed 1,000 tons since the late 1990s, to around 3,000 tons today–about as much as gets eaten annually. The average Japanese, who clearly prefers watching whales to eating them, ingests barely an ounce of the meat each year, compared with 13 lbs. of beef, 22 lbs. of chicken and 79 lbs. of fish.

A Book a Day…

Once again, I broke my moratorium on the buying of books and am officially revoking it because of my inability to implement it.

I just received my part of the profit for Binibining UP Pageant, our advertising class project, and bought myself The Fatal Eggs by Mikhail Bulgakov. The Hesperus Press edition with a foreword by Doris Lessing is sold with a 75% discount in National Bookstore. I bought the book for P84 only instead of the original price of P339!

I consider it a reward for having presented what Prof. Teresita Rodriguez described as the best plan for our advertising class. For the said paper, my group was assigned to make a campaign plan for the Sangguniang Kabataan elections. My group mates conducted surveys in a certain barangay. We explored the community and interviewed officials and residents not a few times. The efforts paid off in the end.

12 things tourists need when traveling in the Philippines

In 1 1/2 weeks we will be leaving for the Philippines (yeepeeee!)! I have compiled a not so usual list of things to bring, to have, to prepare and what not to prepare for my Italian friend who is coming with us. I know sometimes tourists have no idea whatsoever about what to expect of the Philippines, so I hope this list would make packing and preparation easier. Read more…

E-mail inventor: I didn’t foresee spam

Thirty-seven years after the first e-mail was sent, its creator says he never imagined it would become a tool for criminals. At around 7pm one autumn evening in 1971, the first message using Mr Tomlinson’s fledgling software, known then as the ‘Send Message Program’, travelled the short distance of a metre from one computer to a neighbouring machine, and electronic mail was born. “Absolutely not. At that time, the number of people who used e-mail was very small – maybe between 500 to 1,000. So if you were getting spam, you’d know who was sending it. You’d be able to say to them: that’s not a good thing to do.”
