On Rice Shortage

On Rice Shortage

- the tales and the dilemma that goes with it

The government is firm on stating that there is no rice shortage where as Secretary Arthur Yap mention that there is 90% sufficient with 58 days allowance as seconded by Lorelie Fajardo, Deputy Speaker during her interview with Probe. But despite of this affirmation from President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, we witness several incidents of panic buying, product hording and price inflation not to mention instances if pest that plauge our farms where we harvest our rice.

Evil Lurking

Hah! And I thought the recent (or the not so recent) invasion of Qingzi in my once solo abode was the lowest time of my life. But no! I find it an abomination that something like this should exist:

See it here.

It is overpopulation, basically speaking

A debate is flaring on whether or not we are really experiencing rice shortage in response to the continuing global food crisis today. Although it happens that most Third World countries are being hit with the similar dilemma the World Food Programme still praised the government for its immediate solution in our country.
Unfortunately the administration has been praised for the wrong method at all. Rice importation will aggravate our blown-up trade deficit. Philippine merchandise imports have already surged by 19.7% based on the National Statistical Coordination Board’s latest update in December 2007, while the February 2008 exports have only climbed by a mere 10.3%. Our GDP on the other hand, is 18.7% indebted to the agricultural sector in the former’s 5.37% increase recorded 2006, and rice is undeniably its largest contributor.
It is just luck for the Philippines that we have an inexhaustible rice supply, being one of the largest producers of the world and is supposed to be one of its largest exporters as well. But why the shortage?
Rice shortage may be due to these three factors:
1. Lack of proper distribution.
2. Corruption.
3. Overpopulation.

Idol Gives Back

The biggest show in the world gives back again to the world. For the second year, American Idol produced a show titled “Idol Gives Back” to ask for cash pledges that would help people in need especially the people of Africa dying with AIDS.

Many celebrities have graced the show and encouraged people to donate. To name a few Robin Williams was there, Brad Pitt, Teri Hatcher, David Spade, Billy Crystal and so many more celebrities. I enjoyed the performances of Carrie Underwood of course, Fergie, Heart, John Legend, Snoop Dogg, Annie Lenox, Gloria Estefan and Miley Cyrus.

American Idol Top 8 Performance

The American Idol Top 8 finalists sang inspirational songs last Tuesday night in preparation for the Idol Gives Back show. The finalists are thining every week and I kinda feel sad that Ramiele Malubay is not in the show anymore.

From the top 8 finalists, I enjoyed the most David Archuleta’s “Angels” version. Angel by the way is one of my Robbie Williams favorite songs. David Archuleta singing with the piano helped him aced his performance. He’s the guy to beat definitely!
