YPEC: The Beginning
Bringing Back the Christmas Breeze: A Look at Global Warming, Greenhouse Effect, and the Simple Solutions that We Can Offer… It all started with a blog post, a post that has turned the spark into a flame and fueled the desire to do something for the rescue of Mother Earth.
A lot of articles about the environment have already been written and published – its present condition and the problems it faces in the midst of technological developments. Realizing that something has to be done beyond words and print, several young professionals have joined together to take steps towards saving the environment. The Young Professionals Environmental Club (YPEC) was born.
The young professionals in our society are the ones who will take the place of our leaders in the future. They are the ones who will be the future foundations of families, the prime movers of change. Therefore, young professionals should be aware of our society’s pressing problems. They should develop the spirit of initiative in facing and solving these problems. It is only then can they be really prepared to take the place of the leaders, ready to provide the people direction towards a better life. It is only then can they be really ready to become strong foundations of families, capable of preparing their children to take on responsibilities as able successors in leading the society and founding families when their turn comes.
Young professionals, as they move towards globalization and modernization, should see to it that the environment is not neglected and sacrificed for the attainment of success. They should protect Mother Earth from abuse and degradation. This is the moving principle behind YPEC. Made up of only 41 young professionals, the group is still in its infancy stage, still fumbling in the dark but determined to make a change and do something to protect the Earth.
Some of the first activities of the group were its participation in the 1st Scientists and Community Developments Practitioners on Climate Risk Reduction/Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation Round Table Discussion (April 17-18, 2008), the Mayon Climb (April 27-28, 2008), and its participation in the Earth Day (April 22, 2008). These would be followed by activities like tree planting, clean-up drives, nature explorations, first aid training, and others. The club is presently working on establishing an empowered group and recruiting more members who will share with its vision. The organization is also given the opportunity to be represented to the Legazpi City Planning and Development Council (LCPDC). Although YPEC still has to submit documentary requirements to be officially recognized by the said council, it is already actively participating in the committee hearings.
YPEC has very meager resources and manpower, but it has already participated and continues to participate in some major environmental advocacies. Barely three months has passed since YPEC was formally organized and the organization has still a lot to prove. But considering the short span of time and the group’s meager resources, it already has some commendable accomplishments.
YPEC Ideological Framework
The organization was originally intended to be an exclusive club for the employees who initiated its formation. The members of the interim core group even sought the official recognition of their company to adopt the organization as an official club. Although the group failed, this failure served as its inspiration to gain a bigger perspective and more concrete direction.
The group aims for more idealistic goals. Instead of merely settling as an exclusive employee organization of one company, YPEC is now geared towards harnessing the potentials of the young professionals, particularly the Bicolano young professionals – as stated in its vision statement: “The organization envisions a society where young professionals are aware, empowered, and responsible for the care and preservation of the environment, not just through rhetoric but through concrete actions.”
YPEC is primarily concerned about the level of environmental awareness among young professionals. Even among YPEC’s ranks, many are unaware (if not totally apathetic) about the seriousness of the present environmental situation. To address this problem, the leaders of the group are continually striving to inculcate awareness among its members. YPEC believes that the seed of action and social change can only grow on a fertile ground of awareness. The organization cannot expect to win the hearts and minds of the sector that it serves if its own members are apathetic and misinformed.
Mere awareness, however, is not enough. YPEC members must feel the pains of Mother Earth. They must hear her cry. But before this could happen, YPEC members must first appreciate her beauty and learn to love her. This may entail climbing several mountain peaks, exploring ancient caverns, diving in the depths of the coral reefs, and communing with her in the forest cathedrals. It is only after becoming truly responsible daughters and sons of Mother Earth that YPEC members can expect to be real advocates of the environment.
Environmentalism, as an ideology, is not confined within the technical or scientific knowledge of ecology. It is an ideology that must be felt. YPEC desires to shatter the walls of apathy and rally the young professionals not only to be aware but also to be fully involved and empowered in the cause of environmentalism. YPEC believes in the idealism of the young professionals and in their capacity to become catalysts of change.
