Jeepney Fare Increases by 0.50 On May 21, 2008 in Metro Manila

Sad announcement to all commuters. Effective May 21, 2008. Jeepney fare in Metro Manila will increase by P0.50. This means the jeepneys will charge each passenger P8.00 for the first four kilometers. It seems that the P20 that will be granted to workers would be reduced by this additional burden to our pockets. A short computation, the P20 per day multiply by 26 working days will give us P540 but since this is subject to income tax, the take home amount would be less. I guess most of us would save a bit by walking a few blocks if possible.

As if the stars in heaven were aligning themselves to outline my fate, in May 1970, Cambodia, the country where more than thirty years later I was destined to go for my first foreign posting, was all over the international news.

Who are we to judge?

John 7:24 says “judge with righteous judgment”
Proverbs 31:9 says “Speak up and judge fairly”
Matthew 7: 19-20 says thus, “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.” (to recognize their fruits, one must use judgment)
2 Thessalonians 3:6 says, “In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.” (to know who you should keep away from, judgment is clearly called for)

The above passages are just but a few passages from the Bible that speaks about judging. So yes, it is not a sin to judge per se’, but as John 7:24 says, “judge with righteous judgment”. Judge according to the Scriptures, if you see or hear a brother sin, rebuke him, just as Christ rebuked the Pharisees, Sadducees, the Samaritan woman, Nicodemus and even his disciple Peter when he walked on the water and fell for having little faith, and more.

Being judgmental is the very essence of discerning right from wrong, for how can you separate good from the bad if you do not judge? However, it must be taken into full consideration that we must judge fairly and righteously, so if I’d write here that atheism is sinful and is an abomination before the eyes of God, certainly I am being judgmental but also, it would be safe for me to say that I am using righteous judgment because atheism diminishes the Lordship of God, in fact, it denies God.

Roti Mum choco bun

The Philippines has always been a good place to start a food craze. Many restaurants and food establishment that start abroad often makes its way through to the malls and stores of Metro Manila. Often, these places customize their menu to cater to the Filipino palate. Take McDonald’s rice meals. There is no such thing in the US.

Such is the same for Roti Mum – the famous coffee bun from Singapore. I had the opportunity to fall in love with this coffee bun last year. A couple of months ago, I heard that they were now serving choco buns. Hmm… sounds yummy right. Unfortunately, I missed the launch of these chocolatey-ness which they offered for the christmas season. So when I found myself looking through the glass at the choco buns cooking inside Roti Mum Megamall, I did not even think twice and bought a box of assorted buns.
