MANILA, Philippines - The Chinese Embassy in Manila on Wednesday expressed gratitude to the Philippines for its support and assistance to the victims of the earthquake that hit Sichuan province last May 12, where some 12,000 people had perished.
“On behalf of the Chinese Government and people, we would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to the Philippine leaders and people who have expressed their condolences, sympathies, concern, support and willingness to help,” the embassy said in a statement.

The embassy said they are deeply touched by the kindness and friendly sentiments of the Filipino people to the victims and survivors of the deadly quake, which has also caused tremendous damages and property losses.
It noted that shortly after the incident, Filipinos from different walks of life have expressed through the Chinese Embassy their condolences, sympathies, support and willingness to help the quake victims and their families.
“It fully demonstrates that our two peoples are not only good neighbors and friends, but also good brothers and relatives,” the Chinese Embassy said.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has already ordered the deployment of a medical team to the affected area. She also sent a letter of condolences to Chinese President Hu Jintao.
The embassy said they are also thankful for Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo, who sent a letter to Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi expressing sympathies and support, and Philippine National Red Cross head Sen. Richard Gordon, who offered his condolences in his letter to Ambassador Song Tao.
The embassy also said help from other nations like the Philippines will make it easier for the Chinese people to recover from the tragedy.
“With the concerted efforts of the Chinese people and great support from the international community including the Philippines, the people in the quake-stricken area will overcome the difficulties and reconstruct their homeland as soon as possible,” it said.
