Great and Important Events are Meant to be Celebrated!

May 28, 2008

A day after my Lola was buried, the 6 remaining and surviving children of my Lola’s together with their respective spouses minus my father and me (we embarked on a journey going back here in Manila that same morning because my father and mother had an LQ), went to a resort to take off their mind from all the things that have just transpired in the past weeks. And as far as I know going to a beach or any body of water was also part of the tradition or should I say, superstition.. that is to ward off any negative and aversive energy that’s connected with death, that is according to old people’s tale.

They were all still very tired and have not had enough rest and sleep but it seemed that almost everyone were still very full of energy and still up for anything fun. You can never see any tiredness on their faces nor did anyone of them complained of not having enough rest or food. Early that Friday morning, they had to cook food that they will be bringing to the outing and prepare all the things that they will be needing to have the most enjoyable day of their lives free from any hassle, well at least for that day.

That Friday, ended to be one of the most joyous and memorable days that our families have ever had and a day that definitely all of us will remember as long as we live. They put all their worries behind them and they danced the day away to the bubbly and groovy tunes that were played for them to enjoy. Some of them grabbed the microphone and sang along with the live band playing their requested favorite songs. The younger folks were so fired up to the point you would think they were on drugs (laughs!), while the older people were just happy and content to move their aging and wobbly legs and bodies to the beat of the music with great care for fear of breaking any old bones. Who would have wanted to go to an orthopedic hospital when you’re having your dance number in the middle of the cold swimming pool?

That day was the reunion of three generations: the six surviving children of my Lola’s, the grandchildren and the grand children’s children. The sight of babies and new addition to the clan was so inspiring and it gives us so much hope, well at least it did me. That particular time, the clan had three more babies added to the growing number of grand children’s children. Isn’t that wonderful?

That kind of occasion don’t happen as often as we want to because each one of us have our own things and work to do and accomplish. What makes that event so special is that most of us made an effort to come together as one family and put aside whatever issues each family have with whoever. I think that is the real meaning of a family… being together through thick and thin despite individual differences for a common cause.
