Why “squatter” should not be an insult

SQUATTER is a derogatory term that implies one is cheap or ill-mannered, definitely beyond tolerance. One who is called squatter is accused of behaving according to a socially-recognized, imagined lifestyle of the poor. While others may deny its “recognition,” its existence in our collective memory is asymptomatic of the lack of conscious effort to eradicate this elitist perspective. Let’s admit: we know what it means when someone is insulted as ‘squatter.’

The term denotes someone living in shanties illegally located on land that is not one’s own. But when we use the ’squatter’ as an insult, their situation of poverty becomes not only a financial state; but also a subhuman lifestyle that merits disgust. The gap between the rich and the poor is widened by pulling down the description of poor into the fringes of the intolerable. [Read more]

About the Eraserhead reunion concert 2008

I don’t have the authority to bring up a news, but after reading two blog entries giving some clues about a reunion concert of the greatest ultraelectromagneticpop band – the Eraserheads. I’m just speculating and guessing that they will be having a concert this year, but there are no official details yet or press release about their come back and reunion concert. So let’s just say that it is possible and if I’m right or wrong.. at least there’s nothing wrong to dream in watching them play again after their disband on year 2002.

Ok. here are some clues that we need to dissect. ( read more below )

Globe Broadband Inconsistencies!

Globe Broadband Inconsistencies! Until now I’m still not gett’n any internet connection at home. As previously stated on this blog that most providers can’t provide the said connection because of various reasons. Anyway, I’ve resorted to asking Globe to provide me instead the internet connection because others can’t provide it. I completed all the transaction and paid last June 28, 2008 after which the CSR told me that after 10 days all will be set and if my place is quite far from the said box you can just add a few pesos for it to be connected. I also asked how long would be the free wire be and the CSR told me 5oo meters. Now I’m pretty confident that my place is somewhere in between hence, the contractors can connect it w/o any hassle.

A Call to Action – BLOGSWARM Towards Maritime Safety

Join the BLOGSWARM Towards Maritime Safety to create awareness on the state of Maritime travel in the Philippines. The poor sector are affected the most and exploited by greedy shipping line owners made worse by corruption. There is a need for bloggers to come together to improve the situation on the following:

  • The Philippines being composed of 7,107 islands maritime is the major form of transportation of the majority of the poor people.
  • The industry is poorly regulated with so many agencies involved but lacking in equipment necessary to make maritime voyage safe and secure.
  • Poorly managed shipping lines and poor regulation by so many government agencies.
  • Poor record keeping by the shipping lines such as passenger manifest, overcrowding, inadequate life saving equipment and carrying toxic material cargoes in passenger vessels sacrificing passenger safety over profitability.
  • Poorly funded infrastructure such as lighthouses, global positioning devices and distress signal system, rescue vessels for immediate response.
  • Lack of political will to comply with International Maritime Organization safety and liability standards. Not as single maritime casualty investigation report has been submitted to the organization despite having a Filipino elected as secretary general as mandated under the terms of its membership.
  • Passengers and ships are poorly insured lacking P&I coverage due to the ships poor condition.
