THAT ONE THING YOU DO
January 31, 2009
Each one of us has been born with at least one special talent or gift. Staged for his or her own niche, position and place in this world. Each person designed and created with this unique ability. (No, I’m not talking about Heroes)
Organizations know what to call this one thing that they are good at — “core competency”.
Others can say their gift is in-born. (think Michael Jackson when he was 5 yrs old) [Read More]
Saving the Digital Age
January 31, 2009
around this time last year, history channel premiered “Life After People” wherein it incredibly depicted life on earth without us. as an IT PINOY one that struck me most was how it showed the possible problems our current technology might face.
digital camcorders, digital photos, web sites and blogs - all of these are recorded and stored using either servers, hard disks and/or USBs. these containers unfortunately aren’t as formidable compared to egypt’s wall carvings - and this is where the problem lies.

Economic Crunch Eyes H-1B Holders
January 30, 2009
the dominoes continue to fumble and this time the biggest economic crunch in recent years has it’s eyes on foreign workers in the u.s. - specifically those carrying h-1b visas.
Charles Cooper of CNET news reported:
“My point is that during a layoff, companies should not be retaining H-1B or other work visa program employees over qualified American workers,” Grassley wrote on Friday after Microsoft announced its first across-the-board layoffs. “Our immigration policy is not intended to harm the American work force. I encourage Microsoft to ensure that Americans are given priority in job retention. Microsoft has a moral obligation to protect these American workers by putting them first during these difficult economic times.”

A dessert with such a name can only elicit curiosity and interest in me. It may sound like something that would drive you crazy but I was definitely game to try it. I chanced upon the dessert when I was researching for my article for Table For Three Please.
Do Not Study ….. to be JUST an Employee
January 29, 2009
Many times, I know, we have realized that the orientation of a common college student here in the Philippines is studying to be an employee. Not the boss, not the owner, but the employee. Although our teachers try not to get us pretty comfortable with the idea of being a rank & file employee, nonetheless, they are unknowingly training every student here in our archipelago to be one of the majority - the currently worrying employee who is wondering and praying to all the saints and all the known gods not to make his job disappear into the history of today’s financial crisis.
Big companies have closed down, some are in the process of filing for bankruptcy. Others are giving off whiffs of the scent of a future factory close down. Tragic, isn’t it?

Goodbye Multitasking!
January 29, 2009
We all know that getting things done requires a lot of energy and maybe, planning. For the last several years, I have been experimenting on this Time Management principle that I have learned. Its is called “Time Blocks”.
Instead of multitasking, you set aside blocks or periods of time to focus on an individual type of tasks or activity.
You do things with the same thought process, direction and resources instead of doing many different things at the same time.
Instead of doing things this way. [Read More]

Find a Smart Piggy Bank
January 28, 2009
Less than 10 years ago, I just turned 20 then, I needed an additional capital to expand my business.
And so my father, who was mentoring me, decided to help me get a loan. He knew the owners of Asia United Bank, a newly opened bank at the time. He introduced me to the VP of the company and scheduled an appointment with him.
So I met with him. He asked me about my business. How it was doing? What are my marketing plans? How do I handle this and that? I was a 20 year-old young zealous entrepreneur back then and so I gave him my pitch! [Read more]

a brief history of blogging
January 28, 2009
i’ve been searching around on how blogging started and found Clive Thompson’s The Early Years, thought i share this to my fellow IT PINOYs…
January 1994: Swarthmore student Justin Hall creates first blog ever, Links.net.
December 1997: Online diarist Jorn Barger coins the term “Weblog” for “logging the Web.”
April 1999: Programmer Peter Merholz shortens “Weblog” to “blog.”
August 1999: Blogger rolls out the first popular, free blog-creation service.
. . . .
and if you’re wondering about the IT PINOY blogging history, i was able to get a few snapshots c/o Annalyn Yusay’s Blog-o-Rama (posted in 2005).
1996: Lauren Dado, then 10yrs old was the first PINOY blogger!
. . . .

Come and get me! Parking
January 28, 2009
It was a few weeks ago. My family and I decided to go to Mall of Asia. It was a weekend. I was preparing myself to the reality that parking will be so hard!
As we entered the parking area, I knew I was right, parking was full. Looking around, we saw many red dots, one each on top of every parking spot. The red dots were LED lights. So you see hundreds of those lights floating around.

The Climate Needless Expenses
January 27, 2009
Global warming hoax has engulfed the Philippines archipelago with all its alarming fury. Clothed with the usual fear factor and the threat of deluge from rising sea level caused by hypothetical assumptive melting of the earth’s polar ice cover, the Philippine government is preparing measures to avert the imaginary catastrophe. The House of Congress is preparing climate bills for the creation of “Climate Change Commission.” President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo appointed herself as climate change czar providing the sense of urgency of the catalytic situation created by the politicians of global warming.
